I used a soft brush and a spray bottle with water to help get off some of the junk that the vacuum didn't get.

I ended up using a nylon brush to clean the radiators, but spraying them down with water might get into some of the crevices better.

Suggestion

Unfortunately I just had my radiators replaced, but didn't think to have them remove it while they were in there, so I'm thinking about how much effort it would be to drop the front bumper and get them out without having to disconnect any coolant/AC lines.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

18 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just a reminder to fully clean your radiators by taking off the front bumper cover and air ducts. You'd be shocked at what gets caught between the condenser and radiator: This is all the junk that fell out when I took the air duct off. This is between the condenser and radiator. Yuck!!!

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah, I think so. That's quite the buildup of crud.

POST 4Original post

wdb looks like you've cut those shrouds for air passthrough, any reason you didn't just remove the part completely? I'm wondering how much more effort it is to remove them once you've got the bumper off like this. Unfortunately I just had my radiators replaced, but didn't think to have them remove it while they were in there, so I'm thinking about how much effort it would be to drop the front bumper and get them out without having to disconnect any coolant/AC lines.

How do whole leaves get in there anyway? It's how I got the car. I saw radiator cleaning once in the 100K miles of service records and figured maybe I should take a look. To the car's credit it never complained even prior to the cleaning. I see what you're looking at, and it is something I've been meaning to revisit. I have not done anything to the rear fan shrouds and I would be very surprised if either of the previous owners intentionally did either. It's possible that a shop did it without telling them. Or maybe that is just how they look. It's kind of a strange place to make cuts based on all of the stuff I've read on the topic.

Bonus points for the intact butterfly

POST 12Original post

Not quite as dirty, but I can beat you on the butterfly. It was fully intact.

POST 13Original post

Any photos or videos on how to remove the front bumper? Would you consider it easy, medium or difficult?

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 18233349

Easy. Plenty of of threads/posts/vids.

POST 16Original post

@joetaf27 lot of youtube videos if you just search for 996 front bumper removal. No need to remove the headlights or wheels. Most annoying part was getting to the screw behind the side marker and fender liner. I ended up using a nylon brush to clean the radiators, but spraying them down with water might get into some of the crevices better.

POST 17Original post

I'll play. Photo 1 is when I first got my car. Cleaned everything out and installed my diy mesh grilles. Drove the car daily and 20 months later I found what you see in 2nd and 3rd photo. Basically nothing but a few insects. Temps have been fine too
