Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Picked up a 1999 996 last summer and noticed the other day some minor dry rot on the two front tires edges. I have only put around 2000 kilometers on this Porsche since its purchase and was planning om a host of upgrades and maintenance as well. Question is how serious is this? Can I last the summer with another say, another 2000 kms? Tread is nearly new if that matters. Finally my front tires are presently 235/40Z R18 95W As an occasional weekend driver (no track or lunatic speeds) can I get away with buying non Z rated tires?

POST 2Original post

You always want to have good tires. If your tires are cracking/dry rotting they should be replaced for safety. Additionally, a blow out can put you in a bad spot and can potentially damage your car even it doesn't cause you to wreck/hit anything. As far as speed rating, most national tire shops will refuse to install tires on a vehicle that are a lower speed rating than the factory spec tires for liability reasons, and I would guess factory was Z rated. With that being said though, even if you car is a daily driver and you don't track it or drive it crazy, you still want a good set of tires, it is amazing how big of a difference just tires can make in how a car handles, and you can get a quality all-season Z rated tire that is relatively affordable meet your needs and budget better than a Pilot Sport or something similar. I personally have had good luck with Continentals for affordable all-season tires, but I know a lot of people like Nittos too. Edit: I saw you are using KMs, so I am guessing you are not in the US, so the first statement about speed ratings may not apply.

POST 3Original post

yeah, I'd muck those, they're likely hard and noisy new tires are not prohibitively expensive and the return greatly outlays any cost in the ride and performance in addition - check your date codes, anything older than six years is verboten'

Understood and thanks for the advice ! Yes located in Canada so would certainly appreciate any online Canadian tire shops that ship?

Most 235s will have a ZR rating , but look at speed rating, as ZR is an old rating and should consider W or Y or even V as the new metric V 240km/h 149mph --> most all seasons in P car sizes W 270 168 -->most high performance A/S tires Y 300 186 --> summer tires Quattro Tires is great! Thank you for the heads up! My indie also suggested PMC and I have ordered four Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 tires. Well priced for the odd weekend driver and good reviews as well.
