The MK2 996 is compromised because its goal was to "fix" the 996 without actually changing anything expensive, which is never a fair fight for the designers.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm curious as to what the community thinks about this.
My $.02 is that the .1 Carrera is the best looking. It's not
beautiful
, none of the 996s are. The.1 is kind of... cute though.
Funny how we often use such similar adjectives to describe cars and women.
I can't argue with you...even my bastard example...that the .1 is the best looking. I will argue that the 996 can be beautiful - I think mine mostly pulls off menacing in a DeNiro-in-Angel-Heart way. For a car that looks very neutral in the "standard" configuration (silver cab, black over black), the aero 996 (both factory and aftermarket) can look amazing if not overdone.
OR it's a black Volkswagen that, in Philadelphia, is worth fifty bucks...all I know is that I enjoy driving it even more than staring at it when it's clean.
Yes!
I don’t dislike the 996.1/2 headlights but truth be told, 997 and 991 headlights are just sexier in my opinion. There, I said it out loud. I feel better already about coming out.
I have a 40th and previously owned an 02 C4S.
C4S easily best looking 996 out there (also easily the slowest). Then I would say GT3. Next best is a toss up between turbo and 40th depending on your fancy. Headlight situation is what it is, although both .1 and .2 headlights have grown on me over the years.
my order:
.1 coupe with the full taco kit/.1 GT3
C4S w/aerokit
.2 coupe with table top aerokit/.2 GT3
GT2/TT w/fixed wing aerokit
.1 coupe with the alternate wing
C4S
.1 coupe
.2 coupe

I'm not partial to the C4S either. The reflector strip doesn't do it for me, and I'm not a fan of "cut holes in the car so it will look like that OTHER car that is really hard to cool off" styling.
Any of the widebody cars. The narrow body cars look good in their own way, especially the GT3. Although lately I have found myself oddly attracted to the early narrowbody 996 carreras.
So my view is really a combination...I really like different elements of Mk1 and Mk2. Love the front of Mk1 but hate the rear of MK1...MK2 rear is really. However, I like the Taco better than the flat top. ALso, love the MK2 GT3 wheels. THe Mk1 aero also has softer features for the chin and the rockers which I also like. So as a result my car has become kind of a frankenstien because I took what I think is the best of the best. In addition, the problem with 996 is that it is underpowered as well. So some of you have seen that I am putting a 997 3.8l engine in as we speak. So while it is about taste, It is one of my favorite cars now that I have made it just right (for me), :-) Oh and disregard the Italian mistress...it was the only side shot I could find.
Love the nose above...especially once I added the center radiator. Not the soft streamlined look and the GT1ish headlights. Really looks nice lowered.
Note how much better the Mk2 bumper looks and how well it integrates with aero package. The bumperettes look beautiful as well. And the Taco wing can look stunning in some angles (not so much in this angle.
Finally, The Mk2 GT3 wheels. I have two sets, one for the track tires and one for street driving. THey are my favorite Porsche wheels.
My father-in-law (not a car person) said my new-to-me 996 MK1 Aero is the most stunning car he's ever seen. Again, NOT a car guy! I am actually noticing a LOT of heads turn when I drive it. I think it's the Aero and the wheels (and the lowered sport suspension helps too). (But for some reason I have been craving fried eggs non stop since I got it ;-)
I would drive any of them, its the feel more than the look but with that said, I grew to appreciate the sleek fastback look of my NB MK2 when my friend came over in his new (new to him) 997. They just look so much more sleek and with those 295's tucked under the rear it just looks fast.
Yes, but you also have to change out the aluminum bumper under the skin to work with the different style bumperettes. In addition, I needed to get MK2 exhaust tips which are bit longer but everything else I just used what I had before. I think it just brings the rear together real nice.
Here is another angle....I am trying to find a rear/side shot that shows the flow of the rockers to the rear bumper...really integrates nicely...I think its actually better than the Mk2 Aero rockers.
Hard to beat the clean pure lines of the narrow body C2, unfussy, unembellished and classic.
And I will never understand why people try to hide the fact that it's a 996 by putting headlight covers on to apologise for the characterful lights of both the.1 and.2. Be proud of your car, not embarrassed for it to be seen for what it is...I removed the ones on mine within hours of owning it.
As I former owner of a 996 C4S, it's still the one that gets my vote. It has the sexy wide hips of the turbo, but clean lines with the smooth rear fenders and the lack of a rear wing. In my opinion, the red reflector strip looks outstanding, and the way it connects the tail lights is a great tribute to the air-cooled cars. The red reflector strip looks completely out of place on the newer cars.
A close second for me is a MK I aero car. There's something about the simplicity combined with the mild aggression offered by the aerokit that really appeals to me.
Now what is the chance that someone is selling a car exactly the same with a white wingless 996 Aero with black wheels
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1999-porsche-911-16/
agreed; someone above mentioned the holes in the body detracting; I disagree; I think it looks more aggressive, along with the wider rear end
on your car it looks really good either way. the stance and black wheels just look nice. What wheels are those?
Really nice 911! What color is your car?
QUOTE=diddy2003;14644793]What are the specs on those wheels? Offset? I found a set on C/L, but they were 7.5x18 and 9x18s. I like the look of them.
Absolutely. The purest, least-compromised design of the bunch. In fact, I think it's fair to say the MK1 996 is the ONLY 911 that has ever been a pure, clean sheet design. One could even argue (with some stretching) that the original 901 was compromised by needing to use some 356 parts, and evolve from its look. Everything through the 993 was hamstrung by using at least some of the same parts of the 901 body. The MK2 996 is compromised because its goal was to "fix" the 996 without actually changing anything expensive, which is never a fair fight for the designers. The 997 was an attempt to copy the 993 with 996 mechanicals, and the 991 is just an evolution of the 997. The MK1 996 was the ONLY time they've had the ***** to say "hey we're trying something new!" and customers hated it. Oh well. Well, actually, customers loved it; *purists* hated it. All the people that bitch that the MK1 headlights look like the Boxster are thinking about it the wrong way. The 911 isn't STUCK looking like it's cheap little brother the Boxster; the Boxster GETS to look like its handsome big brother, the 911. And by the way where are all the whiners when the halo 918 has basically the same headlight shape as a "lowly" Cayman?

Thank you for the reply. I am glad I did not purchase them. The wheels I found on C/L were the same front wheels, but the rears were 9x18 ET 52. Much different. Considering that I have stock twists that are 10x18 ET 65, it would seem counterintuitive to buy smaller. It is too bad really because they look great on your car.
Mk1 aero, with the M030 lowered 12mm, in a bright color. Snarky, fun, $$$$. Everyone thinks these cost $40-60k, when I tell them what I paid, they think I'm lying. A fantastic package. My only dislike is the amber lamps next to the headlights.
I agree with everything you wrote except for the headlights. They have now grown on me and will eventually be a one year only collectible item. Think split window Corvette (people complained about the split windows so much that dealers removed them upon request once the 64s came out).
The amber lamps don't really bug me, but they are a design element that just didn't need to be done that way. It smacks of economy part sourcing, unlike much of the rest of the car, even though a lot of stuff is same as Boxster.

I don't think there would have been nearly as many complaints about parts sharing and cheapness if Porsche designed the Boxter/Carrera Fried Egg 1999 lights to look like the 996.2 lights. I'm thinking the amber lights were just considered ugly and of course a departure from the traditional shape.

Agree about not caring for AWD. It adds weight, up to 150kg (that's a sumo wrestler as a passenger), adds unsprung weight and torque to front wheels, which affects steering (still very good though), and changes on/over the limit handling.
So if your priority is driving purity RWD has the win, but if you need slippery conditions traction, or are fearful of RWD oversteer, AWD is the best choice.
Sadly, in the 996, if you want those sexy wide hips, your only choice is AWD.
I put driving ahead of aesthetics. C2 manual. Always.
And the rear 3/4 view is the best for pretty much every 911, but especially the 996.
Aerokit, GT2/3, Turbo/Turbo S, are all beautiful to me.
While yes, the 996 gets crap within the 911 lineage.... one must remember that the 911 lineage stands on its own and is the most flawless within the autoverse. There isnt a car that came out when the 996 did that is even within the same realm of timelessness and design modernity (thanks to the evolutionary 911 styling, all models retain classic + timeless virtues, yet the 996 launching the new age water cooled era look, still looks new thanks to even the upcoming 992 retaining extremely close semblance to it). I still stare at nice examples in awe, and the N/A flat sixes scream an epic opera as a 911 should.
Isn't the best looking one whatever is in your garage? Or is it the neighbor's garage?
Anyway, still pretty happy with mine, even though in general I don't care for silver cars.

No question they have more character and are more distinctive than simple round/oval lights.
Style is always a personal thing and I think the vast majority of those who "hate those lights" belong in the camp of the diehards who saw them as a touchstone to vent about the move to water-cooled, and latter day parrots trying to sound knowledgeable.
If you look at the side profile of the 996 it is beautifully balanced and integrated, more so than the later models. Pinky Lai nailed the classic Porsche look for the car, for sure.
I, too, am a fan now of the 996.1 headlights. Especially after finding out about the history of the headlight design.
However, the best OEM look to me would be the C4S.

996 4S gets my vote. Still has the classic 911 rear, 993ish.
$
2004 C4S in Atlas Grey
Agree that C4S was the prettiest. I regret selling it. Boxster is beautiful car, but very different from a 911.
For me its
1. 996 GT2
2. MK1 GT3/Aero
3. C4S
4. MK2 GT3/Aero
A Mk1 Aero is on my list to add to the collection at some point along with a couple others.
Oh, that's purdy! What costs more, a GT3 or a TT?
And FWIW, I have sorta grown fond of the 996.1 taco spoiler. I guess staring at it in my rear view mirror so much wore off on me.
Having had MK1 and MK2 Carreras, C4S, GT3 and Turbos, I think that... they all look good! Some just more so, depending on color/wheels/ride height. Honestly couldn't pick a general favorite.
I believe this settles the argument:
all 996's with ambers are the best looking 996's
.
The answer was right in front of us the whole time.
Can we close the thread now?
I too, like the ambers. To me the side of the 996 is too much of one color, so the little bits orange actually look good to my eye. (Yes, I know I am in the minority on this)
No! Maybe the OP didnt realize it, but the question of the best looking 996 could mean ALL 996s that look the best, the best looking examples across all types, or the best 996s of the same type. Either way, this thread could reach the thousands.
Example: an LS 996 with different Wheels looks pretty sweet
I like what I've done with mine... 2001 996 C2 Cab, 137K miles. Bought it for $9500 and did a restomod. Details at
http://porsche.rossie.net
Rebuilt calipers, powder coated. Powder coated wheels with red lip.
Red and black interior, fully redone in leather, and hydrographics.
Custom leather boot with hydrographics.
Personally the mk1 gt3 is my favorite 996. I really like the large full size headlights when they are all clear/silver, the mk2 headlights just look weird and almost like an afterthought to quell the idiots down who started all the complaining.
I truly think the world will finally come around one day for us who like the “fried egg” look.
For me, the "cleaner" the car the better. I'm not really a fan of the aero add-ons and wings, but as they say, beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. Browsing through this forum, there are some great looking cars and some great photographers!
Stunning! Could be told that's a brand new exotic car and anyone who isn't schooled in 911 generations would believe it. And THAT'S what makes a 911 truly magical.

very nice on the BBS Escreation.. looks stout. I like the subtle badging on the door also
Adam..808Bill.. thanks guys. They are for sale if anyone is interested. Fresh refinish to gloss black powdercoat, black smooth centercaps included. The Enkei RC5 RacingLine Carrera in the last pic are for sale also. PM if interested.
yes sir, I built it with my own two hands. Clayed the rear fender flares and glassed it. Front fender flares were shaped off of a GT3 replica front flare. Side skirts where made by hand, LS1 swap was done by me but did have a shop do the finishing touches to get the car just right.
Yep....it is my forever car...I have put so much into it which makes it unique and me and it has sentimental value. In particular, my late friend Bruce Leven signed years ago under the hood. I also promised a side shot to sow the lines of the MkII bumper on a MkI car...before (when I bought the car 8 years ago) and after (at Dundon Motorsports before I put on the LED tail lights). Only other exterior change was the new paint job.
Before (2010) ...a week after I bought the car
After (April 2018)
Finally to all you Aero/GT3 guys.... I love all of your cars
I am definitely partial.
I love the look of the C4S (thats why I have one), but I have to admit, that I am starting to love more every day the shape and forms of the clean standard MK1 Carrera (with clear turn lights). I think that is going to become a design icon from the 90's

Wow, that's nice looking. Note to self: crouwch down low when taking profile shots. LOOKS MUCH BETTER!
(Yes, he must be lowered. Here's mine on factory sport suspension which is 10mm lower)
I also like the looks of a 911 without a rear spoiler, wing, taco, etc. The recent popularity of late model 911s with huge rear spoilers are confusing to me. I see guys here in LA driving around in $200k Porsches that look like theyre meant for a racetrack. For my taste it detracts from the beauty of this car. But Im an older guy in his 50s, so I guess Im a bit out of touch with whats trendy.
Here is mine.
I think the 996 is aging very well. I wish the interior was a little more durable. Meaning, the interior trim scuffs easy. But, maybe that just gives me a weekend project.
Cheers!
I dabbled between the non aero, aero package car and the 4S. I ended up going 4S for the hips, the bumpers and the side skirts besides some other things. The 4S to me just has that more sophisticated look. For my life style, it seemed to work. The base has grown on me as well for its purity. There all awesome and Id be happy with any of them.
A silver stock 996 Turbo or GT2 /Thread
Don't over complicate it.
Stock, the 996 turbo looks aggressive but classy. It doesn't need any aftermarket clutter. Hell, I'd argue you don't even have to modify the headlights.

I think the "prettiest" 996, would be that of a c4S, with the .2 front fenders, bumper & headlights, being replaced with '99 c2 parts, and filling the lower vents of the rear bumper.
(or) c4S rear fenders, bumper and deck on an early c2. (Again fill the lower rear vents), to achieve the same look.
As someone who recently bought a stock appearing 996 Mk1, the looks are large part of the reason I bought this car. And I have to tell you, everywhere I go it gets tons of attention and compliments for car enthusiasts, kids, and regular folks who just think it's cool.
I do not understand all the hate for the headlamps. I saw the Boxster concept at the 1993 Chicago Auto Show as a teenager and fell in love with it. Elements like the headlamps made the basic round headlights of the 993 look positively old fashioned - just like the round taillights on a Corvette. I'm gladly keeping my headlamps uncovered, amber lenses included.
I think the best looking 996 is the MK 1 GT3. This is the reason I had to get a MK 1 aero with the GT3 style wheels. I really like the look of the headlights and I love the taco!
Here's my super clean 996.1 manual Speed Yellow Carrera... I call it the
Touring-edition
....
Factory optioned w/ the M030 ROW suspension, Leather Sport hardback buckets, the 18" Sport Design BBS, Litronic, Sport exhaust, a pair of Aerokit sideskirts, and matching SY belts.

Here is my 2000 Millennium Edition #196. Recently cleared 175k miles on it and I've made it my own. The color is so wild and doesn't typically show as vibrant as seen here. Polarized lens filters/sunglasses bring the colors out more than the naked eye but when the light hits it just right it really pops!

I've never seen that color in real life -- does the color really vary that much or is it because of the lens filter you are using? It seems like you have identical purple, black, and green Millennium editions
It varies depending on the light. Those three shots are all with a DSLR and. polarized filter, which does help bring out the colors a little more (polarized sunglasses do too). This was earlier today with my phone. A rare multicolor siting lol
This color was one the first colors that has that "Flop" feature that is referred to on the MT TV car show painters. It Flops from one color to another. there are many more colors now available that do similar techniques, Though not many on a production car. The paint is very expensive. (though Porsche is not ashamed to charge for special paint, besides the Solid and Base metallic offerings.
Most "Pearl" colors today have flop but is usually still with with the same color. My Midnight Blue Targa, looks a different color depending on source light color. Black, Dark Blue, Purple.
My Tacoma TRD truck has Dark, Electric and Silver blue.in sunlight.
Best feature of Millennial Edition IMO.
