a great upgrade as my volt meter now stays at/above 14v while running regardless of accessories running.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My 1999 996 with a manual transmission needs a new alternator. Do I need one specifically for manual transmission? Or are they the same for manual and tiptronic?
I have been looking for a used one in Japan, and many of the used ones here came out of tiptronics.
Thank you for your help in advance!
Apparently there is some difference but I don't know what it is. Check out the part numbers for the generator #30 here

My y2k c2 6spd had a clutch pulley on the alt from the factory. That may be the difference between the 6sp and tip? I had my bosch reman rebuilt for around $100 locally and it doesnt have the clutch pulley anymore.
I dont think theres a difference between manual/tip, but not 100% sure on that. I replaced mine per the link below and am pleased. Its made for the 997, but fits perfectly and makes the charging system a bit more robust. I installed the same in a friends 996 Targa last year with no issues since.

You might also consider replacing the Y cable (while your in there) as they do get old/corroded/brittle, along with the starter and battery if you want to freshen up all parts of the charging system. Did all this last week and am pleased with the result.
Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. It looks alternators are the and for manual and tip, but I should call to make sure before ordering it.
Y-cable replacement is a great idea, thank you!
Regulator is real easy to change in your alternator , if it’s giving under voltage or over voltage you can fix it for around 25 dollars and if it’s a OEM alternator most likely your problem., I had a bad regulator at 28 k miles. 2 hour job on Turbo for first time doing one
I think the big difference is the pulley. Manual has a slipper pulley. Also consider having it rebuilt by a good alternator/
starter shop...saves you a considerable amounts of cash. Nothing magic about these alternators, i had mine rebuilt several years ago and its been perfect for last 30,000kms.
It looks like clutch pulley is the difference on these alternators, which can be easily be removed/replaced.
Thank you for all your help, this is a fantastic forum!
Amazon comments say 997 alternator is a great upgrade for 996. Looks like this fits 996 with no problem, shipping to Japan is expensive but still cheaper than getting a remanufactured one here so I’m going to pull the trigger on it this week, thank you sir!
Yep, same link I posted a bit earlier in this thread, Ive installed two (on my car and a friends) over the past few years with no issues to report... a great upgrade as my volt meter now stays at/above 14v while running regardless of accessories running.
