I've read up on the options and I've come to the conclusion that I don't want a short shifter (35% shorter than stock) since many people report negative issues with them when used on daily driver cars, which is what mine is.

I'm looking at purchasing a 997 (not sure if 997.1 or 997.2) shifter to replace the worn one in my 996 C4S.

I've also read about the difference between the 997 and 997 GT3 shifters being just that the GT3 versions have allow bushings which seems like a good idea, but when I looked at the pics of them, they still use plastic inserts in the bushings, so I'm not seeing that it's worth the extra cash since I'm not tracking the car.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
I'm looking at purchasing a 997 (not sure if 997.1 or 997.2) shifter to replace the worn one in my 996 C4S. I've read up on the options and I've come to the conclusion that I don't want a short shifter (35% shorter than stock) since many people report negative issues with them when used on daily driver cars, which is what mine is. I like the idea of the 997 gen shifters being 15% shorter than the 996 gen versions so that's what is swaying me towards that purchase. So... I think I've settled on 997 version shifter based on all I've read. The questions I have are...
1) Is there a difference between the 997.1 and 997.2 shifters?
2) Where can these be purchased other than at a dealership (I've seen them on Suncoast, but pretty much nowhere else)?
3) Is there anything I should consider before pulling the trigger on the purchase?
Thanks for the help on this...
not sure if there are huge differences between the .1 and .2 shifter but I think the 997's were an improvement
over the vague 996 units
I opted for the GT3 unit and couldn't be happier - maybe you can find some local guys who have both and compare
btw, the GT3 offering is sublime

There is some info that might be pertinent in
this thread.
As far as a source, check Sunset Porsche in Oregon or Sonnen in the Bay Area. They're usually always cheaper than Suncoast and if you're in Seattle, the shipping would be cheaper too. I personally never buy from Suncoast because they won't list part numbers on anything which makes it a pain to do any price comparing much less search for anything.
i just installed the 997 shifter. I did get it from suncoast (im in Atlanta) and the price was good. I am very happy with the improvement over the stock 996 unit. the install is easy once you get the center console out...
I picked up a used 997 GT3 shifter, from a burned part out, on eBay back in 2018 for $75.
The car only had 20k miles on it.
Check eBay before you pay retail.
I installed a 997 shifter in my 2002 996. I liked the idea of Alu bushings so I purchased a set from an aftermarket supplier.
the improvement was great. And I also didnt want to go too short so this was perfect.
here is the link to the bushings I installed in the 997 shifter
