Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm in Cape Town, South Africa, and posting here, as I figure there is probably a good knowledge base on this forum. As the title suggests, I am considering buying a 996. This will be my first Porsche purchase. I have always lusted after them since a neighbour took me for a drive in his new red GT3 around 20 years ago. I am not able to afford one of the Turbo or GT models, so a Carrera is what I'm looking for. I have obviously heard about the 'dreaded' IMS bearing issue, which seems to have been made into a bigger issue than it really is. I understand that bore scoring was another potential issue. From what I've seen in Youtube reviews, and articles, it seems as if the 996.1 (1998/1999) had a twin IMS bearing, which was less likely to fail, as well as stronger cylinder linings. What I'd like to know is, which are the pros and cons of the earlier vs later ones? I understand with cars of this age, its less about year model, and more about condition, service history and gearbox type (manuals being more in demand). Please let me have your thoughts, comments, suggestions and anything else you feel like adding for a potential first time 996 owner.

Hello and welcome to the excitement. For the above question, if it is about the IMS bearing, you are unlikely to get anyone to write a specific answer. There is so much written about the IMSB here on the forum, it is probably best to search and read about it. However if the question about the 996.1 vs 996.2, then here is a pretty good summary of the changes to the 996.2 (also known as the Mk1 vs Mk2). https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...l#post15173972
