I used a Battery Tender to keep it optimally charged.

If you're the type that insists on only running "N" spec'd tires, then Ctek or OEM Porsche trickle charger(same thing).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It's time to put the car away for the winter. Is there really any difference in the various chargers? The prices are all over the map. Recomendations?
Also does it matter if you use the lighter or directly to the battery? Is one preferred?
I have this one. Worked great and you can snake the cables into the battery area between the windshield and the hood. I left the frunk popped open and sitting on a balled up rag just in case though.

Buy CTEK 3300 for $60 Amazon prime shipped and use the eyelet hookup provided to the battery. They private label for Porsche and is 50% of Porsche brand.
Everything mentioned so far are fine choices; I ended up with a Deltran Battery Tender which has a harness to the battery allowing for quick connect and disconnect. You can leave it plugged in indefinitely and it won't overcharge the battery. Griots Garage also sells a long extension cable for the harness (SAE connector) if your wall outlet is not close.
That's what I have on my cars....but what I found is that the eyelet hookup requires to be drilled out to fit a standard battery connection....it's a bit of a challenge to drill those things out. Did you have that issue?
I have a couple of the battery tender juniors - one in each garage, and I leave the 911 and/or Corvette plugged in anytime they'll be parked for more than a day or two. Takes all of 15 seconds to pop the hood and connect the cable...which is a lot less hassle than hauling a dead battery to Autozone to swap out for a new one.
If you're the type that insists on only running "N" spec'd tires, then Ctek or OEM Porsche trickle charger(same thing). Else there is a lot of choices for the rest of us. Battery Tender Jr. does the job for me as well. I also have a Duracell that I never had any issues with.
The biggest thing you want to look for is the smart charging logic function as to not damage your battery in anyway. Most of the quality charger/batter maintainers come with this these days.
+1 for the CTEK 3300. I've used it on a handful of cars and on my scooters and motorcycles.
Been using mine for 5+ years and counting with no problems!
Like many other posters, I have a CTEK that I use in the winter. I drive my car in the winter if conditions are favorable (i.e. clear day, dry roads), so I use the cigarette lighter plug instead of the permanent eyelet connection. Works great.
I am a fan of Deltran Battery Tender (best price from WalMart of Amazon). Very good factory warranty

When I got my 996 the prev. owner included the Porsche trickle charger (plugs in to cig lighter). He used it, with the car in one of those inflatable bubbles in the garage each winter.
I've not no use for this thing now that the car lives in a garage in NYC..
Extra junk in the frunk
Another Battery Tender fan... I have several of them (Jr, Plus, International) and use them on all my cars and motos, including the bikes that I run with lightweight LFE batteries.
I have a half-dozen motorcycles, all on Battery Tenders. I'm very pleased with the brand, over many years of use.
Other chargers may be as good, or even better, but the Battery Tenders are certainly "sufficient".
The way I look at it is Deltran core business is(was) chargers. They've been in business long time producing good chargers, has great rep, good warranty, great after sales support. Not much more you can really ask for.
They are now selling Li- Ion batteries for small equipment. I wish they made a tad more robust one to use as a race battery.
