Suggestion
If going aftermarket then you have to check the offsets.

Suggestion
I'll likely go 235/40/18 and 295/30/18 when I replace these tires.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a narrow body '04 40th Anniversary and I need to get some tires for it.
I've pretty much settled on MPSSs for the car. Unfortunately they don't come in "stock" size, so I'll have to up the size.
For the rears, I'll run 285/35-18.
For the fronts, I was going to run 235/40-18 but I've run across a couple of threads where folks ran some 245/40-18s.
If I do the math, the 245/40s are closer in diameter then the 235/40s when compared to the 285/35s.
Has anyone run the 245/40s with stock 18" wheels on a NB with an x74 suspension? If so, was there any rubbing? (I'm not looking to shave/roll the fenders)
As a point of reference:
235/40 = 645.20mm
245/40 = 653.2mm
285/35 = 656.70mm
The delta with 245s and 285s is much smaller then with 235s and 285s. So it looks like 245s and 285s is ideal, the question is will it rub?
The stock rears on the 40AE are 285/30/18. Why would you run 35 series when 30s are stock?
You won't have any issues with 235 fronts and I highly I doubt you'll have any issues with the 245s. I'm installing a set of 245/40/18 s on my 40AE this week along with 315/30/18s in the back. I'm hoping the rears won't rub but these tires are already mounted on a set of track wheels I purchased this week and wanted to see if they fit for a DE this coming weekend. If not I'll outfit these 9x18 and 11x18 wheels with 235/40/18 and 295/30/18 tires.
Umm, maybe because this:
"Unfortunately they don't come in "stock" size, so I'll have to up the size."
Yoda, I'm in the same boat posted similar thread few days back.
Hankook stopped making the 285&295/30-18 on the Ventus V12 V2's so I face same dilemma for next round of tired.
285/35-18 and 235/40-18 work just fine here, however PO rolled the front fenders so I don't know if you'd get a little rubbing or not. None happened for me on one track day so far, and that with the X74.
Look at the manufacturer's site for actual diameters. I believe they don't exactly match the "math". When I did the calculation for my car I got a 0.4" difference between mine, 1.6%.
Is your suspension stock? I want to get the 245s in the front, but I'm not sure if they'll fit or rub.
Mine is stock right now, but I have a set of NIB x74 waiting to be installed.
You still waiting to install that x74? man are you missing out on some fun Yoda.
The x74 transforms the car. I am now on x74, RSS mounts, FF1 transmission insert and going in Thursday for TorqueSolutions tie rods in the rear. Getting very GT3"ish"
Yes, I'm running stock suspension right now. 2 more events to go this year and in the offseason I'll be installing a race coilover system.
The 245 width will only extend the tire out an additional .4" which shouldn't be an issue. I've fitting 245 NT01s on Thursday and I'll be able to give you a definitive yes or no then.
Ugh, I've just been busy. I mean in the past 2-3 years I've put a whole 3k miles on the car.
I will say, I drove the car last friday to get her out of the garage, and it put a smile on my face! Honestly wish it had PDK so I could drive it more often. I've been kind of thinking about selling it and maybe picking up a 997.2 with PDK, but the extra money I'd need to kick in doesn't make sense.
So now I'm getting tires! Once I put the tires on, I'm committed to the suspension! hahaha
I've gone ahead and ordered 235/40s for the front and 285/35s for the rears. MPSSs, and they should be installed on Saturday. Maybe with the bigger tires I won't need to lower the car. HAHAHA
Yoda, send me pics when you install tires curious I am looking at same sizes for my x74 but don't need tires for another 6 months or so. Also, get that x74 in you really don't know what you are missing!
I have a 2003 C4S. I just put my new winter tires (Michelin Pilot Sport A/S since rain is more of a question than snow here) on the car using the standard wheels. This tire is not available in the normal 295/30-18 so I got 285/35-18 for the rear and 235/40-18 for the front. The diameter difference is 2% and I hear that the max allowable is 5% for the all wheel drive. The rear sits 0.15 and 0.45" higher front and rear but this is not noticeable in my opinion.
I have not had any rubbing on the fronts or any codes from the AWD system. The speedometer is a bit closer to correct according to my GPS. The ride is significantly quieter and smoother compared to my worn out PS2s . I am looking forward to trying them in some moderate snow.
...and the definitive answer is yes, the 245/40/18s fit up front with no issues. I'm currently running the stock M030 suspension. I've also managed to get 315/30/18s on the rear w/no issue as well. It looks almost 'vette'ish being that wide which I'm not sure I'll keep on there. These tires (Nitto NT01) were 'free' with a set of track wheels I just purchased so I thought I'd try them at an event I'm attending at CMP this weekend. I'll likely go 235/40/18 and 295/30/18 when I replace these tires.
EDIT: Well, I thought they fit but I discovered an issue with one of the fronts. I didn't realize it was rubbing but when I pulled the tire off to balance it yesterday, I saw that a little bit of paint was missing from the shock tower. The 245 did rub ever so slightly on the passenger side but nothing on the other three wheels. That being the case I took off all four wheels just went with my previous set of OEM sized wheels/tires. As I said previously, I be fitting 235 and 295 the next couple weeks.
What kind if pictures do you want? Which angles?
Got them installed today. Haven't had much time to evaluate, as I just drove home and left the car. Needed to go to a nursery with my wife and landscaper. =(
They do look bigger. Fills the wheel wells a little bit more. They don't seem any quieter then the ps2s I had on before. I was expecting Lexus quiet based on everyone's reviews of the tires. Haha
Not quite Yoda but here are some of mine which has the MPSS in the same size as Yoda's and the x74 installed. The two-finger fender clearance tests are tight in the rear and loose in the front. (Front is the fuzzy photo, sorry)
Front, 235/40-18, x74
Rear, 285/35-18, x74
Rear clearance test (tight!)
Front clearance test (loose)
Just a convenient clearance indicator. For ride height fingers need to be horizontal and touching top of tire. This is at an angle between sidewall and fender to show clearance.
Thanks for the photos Mike!
Yeah who knows when I'll put the x74 on!
Since with the bigger tires it looks lower now! hahaha
Actually, I like the stance on Mike's car, so this may encourage me to get off my butt.
Mike, are you running spacers? I have a set 7/15mm and I don't know if the tires will fit once the car is lowered.
[QUOTE=mklein9;11754927]Not quite Yoda but here are some of mine which has the MPSS in the same size as Yoda's and the x74 installed. The two-finger fender clearance tests are tight in the rear and loose in the front.
Do you have updated wheels that required spacers? I didn't change anything on wheels, is totally stock. The x74 really lowers it quite a bit. Ground clearance at the rubber fender deflector (I think that's what it's called) is only 3.5".
BTW, I can no longer go to a car wash. Even though our local car wash says they handle low profile cars, the rail that guides the tire through rips up the deflector with (in my case) collateral damage of the fender liner itself that has the holes the deflector snaps into.
I have the same wheels as you, but the 40th AE shot-peened look instead. So the offsets should be the same.
The reason I was asking is because I have some brand news spacers (7/15mm) that I haven't put on yet.
Yeah, I keep collecting parts and not put them on. x74 and spacers. Wondering if the wheels would fit with the tires, x74, and spacers. Or perhaps I'll just sell the spacers. HAHAHA
Yoda if keeping the Stock rims you might want to try the spacers. If going aftermarket then you have to check the offsets. I went with Victor Innsbruck's and basically they are offset as if OEM with spacers and I have had up to 295 rear with no issues.
