If the car has been used mostly to drive on the excellent Autobahn where speeds are very high compared to twisty slow under dimensioned crappy roads (like those on the west side of Norway).

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Since there are different measurements in parts of the world. Eg. USA, Burma and Liberia use some old English units. There are also differences in round numbers, and to my point cars that has been driven far. In my country we use metric (which is by far the most user friendly system), we tend to think that a car that has been driven over 100 000 KM to be a bit far, 150 000 far, and 200 000, well you will have a hard time selling. Those lengths are all round numbers and would translate into smaller numbers in old English units. e.g. in English miles they would be 62 000, 93 000 and 124 000. I guess mine soon has been driven far but is it far in quirky units? What do you think is a far driven 996, at which point would you think twice about buying one?

POST 2Original post

Mileage doesn't bother me, as long as it's been maintained. Maintenance trumps mileage every time for me.

POST 3Original post

One parsec is considered too far in my area of the woods.

POST 4Original post

You have to consider average mileage for the location. Here in the U.S. where things tend to be spread out quite a bit, they are a bit higher than what you're reporting. My understanding is that in Europe many places are a bit smaller with really strong mass transit systems. In the U.S. unless you live in one of about 10-12 major metropolitan areas, public transit is not an option. That being said, 100,000 miles is where you see cars take a significant hit in dealer book value in the U.S.. I still see many cars sold here with 125,000 to 150,000 miles. If proper maintenance has been done, these can be a real bargain!

POST 5Original post

One thing people overlook is how and where it's been driven. I'd gladly take a higher mileage example that's been mainly driven on the highway vs low mileage one that's sat in urban rush hour traffic only going couple mile short trips in heavy stop and go all it's life.

POST 6Original post

Depends on how old you are. The baby boomers remember when a car with 80k miles was truly at the end of its lifespan. A younger buyer today(18-45) would likely consider an 80k mile car as just broken in. Better machine tolerances and quality oil are much of the reason IMO that any car that doesn't go at least 150k miles hasn't served its owner very well. As far as highway vs. stop and go mileage is concerned. I wish the auto industry would follow the marine industry and equip cars with meters that reflect hours run.

POST 7Original post

definitely maintenance over mileage especially when the maintenance can be documented.

Actually they do, but you normally have to connect a computer to it with your ODBII. For example this screen shot of the Durametric software shows the engines operating hours is 917. Just to mention it, everybody should have a Durametric cable, has saved me a lot of and $$$$$$.

POST 9Original post

I kind of figured that modern cars fitted with OBD would give you this kind of information. But how does one judge hours of operation vs. miles accumulated? I suppose you can divide hours of operation into mileage and come up with an average speed to ascertain if miles were run up at highway speeds. So a 10 year old car with 50k miles is considered a low mileage car, how many hours of operation (if mostly highway speeds) would you expect that car to have?

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Good point 951, in countries where the road network is from the stone age compared to e.g. Germany the mileage does not mean that much. If the car has been used mostly to drive on the excellent Autobahn where speeds are very high compared to twisty slow under dimensioned crappy roads (like those on the west side of Norway). Then the high mileage German vehicle has considerably less wear and tear, I am inclined to conclude. I am hooking my Durametric up when I get off work to check and divide the KM's by operating hours, for sure

POST 11Original post

Psychologically, I think many people would consider "far" as the point when it clocks over from 5 digits to 6 digits - regardless of the actual units.
