Suspected cause
It was probably a $50k turbo before the shunt 700 miles ago.

Here's the one I was talking about with the pre-repair pic posted to avoid further confusion.

Suggestion
No good way to know if the car has had other damage from what’s shown in the “pre-repair” picture, for that matter hard to know if that was even the same car.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have no affiliation to this car. Assuming it has been repaired properly and you weren't concerned about resale (so you were going to keep it), why wouldn't you pull the trigger on this one?
Ad reads as follows- "Buy It Now" price is $27,000, high bid currently is $21,000 (reserve not met)
You are bidding on a 2001 Porsche 911 Twin Turbo:
This car is in excellent shape! The car has no dings, dents, or paint chips. The interior is in great shape no cracking in the leather and owned by a non/smoker...
The car has been maintained by a Porsche dealership and has had full maintance done just recently. The turbos are in excellent shape and have been fully checked out and just had maintenance done to them. Just last month in September 2014, I purchased 4 NEW Mich Pilot Sport tires for the car.
The title has rebuilt on it. You would never guess that after driving it that the undercarriage has been rebuilt. It runs and drives flawlessly.
The car is being sold as is:
I saw that one too. Coincidentally 2 different rebuilt title 996's appeared in the same night. One being a C4S.
Lowest I've seen was $23k for a Turbo with a CLEAR title with higher miles.
Only thing that would be of concern is where you lived as every state has different criterias on rebuilt cars.
It was nice that the seller included a pre-fix pic in the listing so you can somewhat assess the severity of the damage, from a high level at least.
I didn't see the seal gray turbo with the rebuilt title and 43k miles.

Looks like $25k would definitely buy that one also. I think I like it better, actually - a little more curb appeal with the black interior and contrasting red stitching on the seats. Man, that's a lot of car for $25k.
I would run the autocheck first before talking to the seller.
The vague reference to "undercarriage" being rebuilt sounds like pure BS.
To get the TT salvaged the amount of damage done to the car has to be substantial. I am assuming this car had a massive frame damage, hence the rebuilt "undercarriage". Knowing the shop that did the repair and calling them to verify the extent of the damage would be ideal.
The last thing you want is to buy this car, get it going at 150MPH and have your frame collapse or strut tower break.
Here's a link to the damaged vehicle.

Undercarriage damage, and what would cause the wheel to break like that? only 700 miles since rebuilt.
I wouldn't risk it!
car certainly hit a curb at pretty high speed. all suspension links would have had to be replaed
only good thing is that all suspension links break pretty easily in order to preserve the chassis.
Car certainly ok, but will never be the same as not wrecked.
considering everybody on this forum has OCD.. No way for reenlisted. for a guy who want to cruise in town, no problem
If I had to make up a story about that, it would involve some idiot (like me) flying around right turn with PSM off. Boost kicked in, the back end became the front end, she whacked into and over the curb hard enough to break that left rear wheel (which at the time was the front right wheel)... It doesn't look like the steering wheel or passenger dash airbags deployed, further suggesting that this guy augured into the curb sideways...
Check out the passenger-side - things are definitely not quite right. Repairs would have had to be top-notch to prevent it from crabbing a little (or a lot) after getting whacked this hard...
Where the hell did the rear passenger-side tire get off to?
"Undercarriage rebuilt" sounds a little subtle...something like describing Michael Jackson's nose as having undergone "some revision."
Still better than this though, right?
And, dammit, that seal gray one with the black interior, sport seats and red stitching is singing to me boys.
Somebody stop me before it's too late - I've still got a bouncing baby 928 in the garage with a bad waterpump that needs fixin' and a crapload of 928 parts sprawled out on the workbench!
But for 25 grand, a one-way ticket to Houston and a quick drive home . . .
OK, but what I really want is Speed Yellow.
But, then again, a 50 year old guy driving around in a Speed Yellow 996TT might be just a tiny bit over the top, so the seal gray is actually the more responsible, mature thing to do . . .
Yeah, I've got a thing for Guards Red, too, and if I buy this one I'll kick myself next time I see a good deal on a Guards Red turbo . . .
Sure, but you've been kicking yourself already for not buying that Speed Yellow one that was for sale in Vegas in August that you could've gotten for $25k . . .
Anybody else ever go through this?
Just to clarify, the seal gray was the one I was talking about with the pre-fix pic.
It doesn't take a lot for some insurance companies to total cars like this out.
It happens all the time to other exotics, even the NSX.
A couple of things (aside from obvious issues with resale etc. arising from a salvage title):
The suspension looks substantially lowered, is this related to the previous damage? If not, still could be a problem.
No good way to know if the car has had other damage from what’s shown in the “pre-repair” picture, for that matter hard to know if that was even the same car.
Side note, headlights look substantially discolored -->a lot of time under the sun can mean other shrinking seals, stiffening/shrinking leather (full leather interior on turbos). Also, a $20k turbo is not going to be maintained the same way a $50k turbo would have been. Buyer beware, etc.
To clarify I found the pre-repair picture from a google search of the VIN. Definitely the same car since there is only about 400 miles difference between the two.
OK, likely the same car. It may be a decent deal for someone but keep in mind it’s not hard to find one for $30k with a clean title. Like this one that sold for $31k if I remember correctly (2002 model, around 100k miles, very clean. Sport suspension, sport seats, all records):
I think the second car posted (one directly above this post) is a much better buy.
In the interest of full disclosure, I’ve seen both of these cars, and would consider them for myself. Though my risk tolerance is rather high. As for the car being the deal of the century, this is the second time it’s on eBay, it didn’t pull quite $25k the first time. So not too many people out there consider them great deals. More food for thought.
No way! They want way too much for that, just from the picture alone I can already tell that there is something wrong with it. The stance is not right mismatched color panels, faded headlights. Someone put this car back together on the cheap using used parts and not very good painter. Just run away!
