Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. As I was checking around for best price for an auto trans filter, and I get drastically conflicting results from parts dealers.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a 2002 Porsche 996 3.6L N/A, Tiptronic automatic transmission...
As I was checking around for best price for an auto trans filter, and I get drastically conflicting results from parts dealers.
Pelican and several others list one type of filter for the 2002-05 that is different from the 1999-01; However, MANY other parts sites list THE SAME filter for all 996's 1999 - 05 (they list the AC Delco TF331)!
Physically, the two options look very different.
I have attached pics of each.
I contacted RockAuto (which shows the 1999-type that they say also fits the 2002-05 trannies) and they SWORE that theirs is correct. They stated that their records show that they sold over 150 of these filters for 2002 911's, and that they have not received ONE return for incorrect part.
What's the story?? Surely they are not interchangeable, right?
Anyone have any experience with this?
Who are those 150 Porsche owners 2002+ years, who have bought the older version and not returned them?
The single filter on the left is the one that Pelican says is only 1999-2001, but others say is for 1999-2005:
The two filters on the right are the ones that Pelican and a few others say is 2002-2005 (different from 1999-01 Tips):
Go to Porsche Atlanta parts under 911/transmission, it shows the two for diff yrs with photos. It agrees with Pelican.
If you want hi-res photos, go to ECStuning and punch in the p/n.

While it's hard to doubt sources like Pelican and Porsche car experts, is it POSSIBLE that either filter, regardless of their major difference in appearance, can fit??
As models get older, we certainly see DIYers discovering alternate parts that fit just as well -- the purist mentality gets preempted by practicality and/or necessity.
Anyone ever tried both parts?
I emailed back to RockAuto, giving them links to Pelican's catalog showing the difference, but they insisted that their part numbers were established by their distributors. They reiterated that they had over 150 sales for 2002+ 911's with no returns for "wrong part.". Seems like they would want to ensure that their part numbers were correct. Maybe they are double checking with them.
I am half-tempted to order the part from RockAuto, email them my concerns and my skepticism, and want them to guarantee return postage -- just to prove them wrong (or right?).

Don't take short cuts on something like this. Just get it from Porsche and be done with it. OR spend countless time/effort researching this to get back to square one.
