We have two separate garage doors and a gate, so I used all three Homelink buttons.

The mirror does come with a long wiring harness if you would rather run a wire down the A-pillar to the fuse box.

It goes over the Porsche button and is secured with a set screw as mentioned above.

The only other thing to consider during installation is that the aftermarket mirror utilizes the wedge style mount found on domestic cars and Porsche uses a bayonet style mount.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Mine required some minor filing to make it fit properly, but it worked well.
I have been looking for a shift **** to replace the stock one in my 4S and to match my EBrake.
Well I found this on EBay and won it for........$26 shipped. New in the box with boot. Never seen one without the horseshoe but it is all factory correct. Kinda cool.
No horseshoe on mine either, has a factory Seal Grey console. Maybe the horseshoe doesn't come with painted consoles? Never realized it before until seeing this post and wondering what was different about your new shifter, mine looks the same, just black.
Great deal!! Every now and then you can find something like this real cheap. I bought a brand new aluminum handbrake for 99$. I thought that was a great deal, but you cant beat 26$.
That modification is good too. I did the mirror in my 996 for two reasons. First of all, I needed multiple buttons. We have two separate garage doors and a gate, so I used all three Homelink buttons. Secondly, my 996 didn't come from the factory with an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The Homelink mirror that I bought had this function.
Alpine, your car has way more buttons than mine. It's just about that time of the year that I really wish mine had those two buttons Down on the batwing panel.
Yeah I can't believe it, first the seats now this. I have been looking for a while though. Grey parts are hard to find.
The horseshoe is the silver part at the bottom of the shift boot.
Dennis, was that mirror replacement a direct plug and play? Where did you find the mirror? Did 996's come with that option?? I would love to ditch the opener and we have multiple doors as well.
The mirror that I bought was an aftermarket mirror made by Mito Corporation. I bought mine at
www.radar-mirror.com
. I don't think that Homelink was an option on any of the 996 OE mirrors, including the auto-dimming mirror.
If you follow the link to the website that I posted, you'll see that there are several options that you can consider. One nice option is to convert your existing mirror to a Homelink mirror. If mine had been an auto-dimming mirror from the factory, then this is the option I would have chosen. Another option is to install one version of the Mito mirror. I chose the one with auto-dimming and Homelink. You can also get one with a thermometer and a compass. You can get a custom mirror with a radar detector display in the glass if you choose.
The aftermarket mirror was not plug-and-play, but installation isn't very difficult. Wiring is required - you'll need to tap into a switched, unswitched and ground wire. These are readily available near the sunroof motor - many DIY guides are available online if you search. I used little wire taps and it was easy. The mirror does come with a long wiring harness if you would rather run a wire down the A-pillar to the fuse box.
The only other thing to consider during installation is that the aftermarket mirror utilizes the wedge style mount found on domestic cars and Porsche uses a bayonet style mount. There are two ways to deal with this. The first is to buy a wedge mount adapter from
www.radar-mirror.com
. Mine required some minor filing to make it fit properly, but it worked well. The downside of this solution is that the mirror won't sit totally flush on the windshield surface. It's not a really big deal, but it doesn't sit down as nicely as the factory mirror. It can restrict the amount of travel available to the mirror, making it difficult for very tall drivers (the mirror hits the cabin lights in the uppermost position). The other option (I've heard about this one but I haven't seen it personally) is to go to a windshield or auto glass shop and have them remove the Porsche windshield button and replace it with a wedge mount plate, allowing the mirror to attach directly to that.
I did the same mirror mod as Dennis. My mirror is a Gentex 453, which is an auto dimming unit with 3 Homelink buttons and a compass. I got everything -- the mirror, wiring harness, and button-to-wedge adapter off eBay. If you go this route, be sure to get an adapter that uses setscrews to create and maintain a tight fit to the button.
I have a cab, so I had to pull power from the phone connector and route a 3-conductor wire under the dash, up the driver's side A-pillar, across the top of the windshield, and down through the dome light. That was a bit of a pain, but only because my oversized middle-aged body doesn't do the upside-down-under-the-dash thing very well. Otherwise, it's pretty straightforward.
I got a good deal on the mirror and as I recall the whole deal cost me maybe 125 bucks ... IIRC, the adapter was about $40, the mirror was 60-something, and the odds and ends added another 20 or so. These mirrors are pretty generic; mine came out of a Japanese SUV. As luck would have it, the compass lighting is amber so it matches the rest of the car pretty well.
I'll post a few pics if possible ... at the moment I'm on my iPad and the app is giving me the dreaded "parse error" when I try to upload a photo.
Good point about the adapter. The adapters are made out of aluminum. The original design was a horseshoe shape and it simply slid over the top of the Porsche windshield button. The newer design has a hole in the center as opposed to an open bottom like the horseshoe. It goes over the Porsche button and is secured with a set screw as mentioned above. I believe that the mirror that I bought was also branded as Gentex, even though Mito Corporation was the manufacturer. The one that I bought looked very similar to the mirrors in GM cars.
Fwiw, any home link based mirror will work if you either adapt or find a mount that's the same. Auto dimming may require some wire modifications. I've seen some 996 guys use the BMW ones for example.
I'd love to splurge and get this below with Valentine/homelink/auto dimming integration but that's not exactly on the priority list now.
