Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that suspect a cause

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Suspected cause
I think I actually smashed it against the DIN frame until it fit, but there's probably a better way.
Leading evidence: 'better way' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'better way' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Run along the top or bottom of the insert' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.

IIRC, there are a couple ridges that run along the top or bottom of the insert that had to be shaved down...

Suggestion
If you are moving it from Lower-Slot-Upper-Dash to Upper-Slot-Lower-Dash, you can use the bezel you already have.

IIRC, you may need to trim the top of the bezel as it is slightly taller than the space using the top slot of the lower console
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Upside down make no difference, on the top it as high as it goes and you can see how much the difference is.
I need your help. I have been searching on how to relocated the climate control to the top slot on the lower console. I have not found any information on how to do it. Everyone seems to be relocating the climate control to the lowest part of the lower console.
Has anyone done it this way? What did you modify to make it work? Thanks!
below is how I would like to relocate the climate control
Easy mod... The HVAC will go in either slot, but there are two different bezels. If you are moving it from Lower-Slot-Upper-Dash to Upper-Slot-Lower-Dash, you can use the bezel you already have. To go from Lower-Slot-Upper-Dash to Lower-Slot-Lower-Dash, you need a new bezel [996.552.339.00.01C]
Likewise you can put a storage cubby in the upper or lower slot, but again, two different part numbers.
The trickiest part of the job is just rerouting the cables...
I bought an aftermarket radio installation kit and a console storage shelf from Suncoast and had it done professionally. See link

I would like to relocate my climate control to this spot and swap the console storage to the top.
My new question is will the console storage fit in the top spot where the climate control used to be? I really do not want to replace that slot with a cup holder or buy a double din radio.
I've moved mine, I wanted to put it the upper position of the forward console but it is physically too tall to fit in that spot, so I put it in the lower position. Are there 2 different versions of the forward console?
It will fit in the slot.
IIRC, you may need to trim the top of the bezel as it is slightly taller than the space using the top slot of the lower console
It may be a little different on MK1 and MK2 cars
If you look closely at the pic, you will see the bezel extends slightly above the lower console
Interesting - I owned two cars with that same lower console and never realized they were different heights. I could swear I moved stuff between the two - but I guess I'm on the crack.
If you aren't worried about modifying the console, 5 minutes with a Dremel could probably rectify the issue.
IIRC, there are a couple ridges that run along the top or bottom of the insert that had to be shaved down... I think I actually smashed it against the DIN frame until it fit, but there's probably a better way.
The top slot has the beveled/curved edge that has to be removed. What I don't really understand is why Porsche made the slots a standard DIN dimension, but made the HVAC controls bigger than that. A standard radio will fit fine in any of the slots, as shown in my 986 radio hack job - so why the crap is the climate control stuff intentionally a weird size?
That unit was probably designed after a three-stein lunch...
Upside down make no difference, on the top it as high as it goes and you can see how much the difference is. I don't know if year makes a difference. Maybe I'll pull the 02 996 and see what it's like. It's really not a big deal, but I'd prefer to use what I have now, the tapered cubby and original bezel. I'll play some more. Thanks guys.

Playing some more, if I slid in in as far as it will go and putting pressure upwards, the closest I can get is for the bottom edge to be flush with the bottom edge of the middle horizontal part that separates the top and bottom opening. To get it that close requires quite a bit of upward pressure and I would not be comfortable like that, I could hear some strange sounds from the front console and I'm still short about 3/16". That does not even account for shaving off the center guide that is on the bottom of the unit.
