I'm not arguing that there are cheap HIDs out there these days but most of the kids without budgets are using stock headlamps with halogens that have a blue tint on them.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all I have a 1999 C2 that was fully optioned with the HID headlights at the time of its build. I'm sure the headlights were great then, but now, they're not so great... I'd love to be able to retro fit the HID/Xenon units as on the Singer builds, but I'm not sure they'll fit etc. Does anyone here know of a good update be it LED or HID/Xenon that is a plug & play option for the 996? Rgd's AT

POST 2Original post

The easiest solution may be simply changing your bulbs. HID bulbs lose intensity as they age and the color temperature changes. HID bulbs that are more than 10 years old will produce less light than new bulbs. There are some cool retrofit kits available for the 996. Try Pelican Parts and see if there is something there that interests you.

POST 3Original post

Yeap, first two steps are to polish your housings if they've yellowed and to get new bulbs. We're still on our original bulbs 16 years in, but while it convinced us that HID was a requirement for all future cars, they just don't hold a candle to the ones in her 07 BMW or my 13 Cayenne. Quite literally a night and day difference. Just don't drive it enough at night anymore for it to have been a high priority.

POST 5Original post

The newer HIDs are pretty good at blinding everyone else on the road. They are stronger than the older ones and unless the road is perfectly flat, everyone else is paying for these "night and day difference" HIDs.

POST 6Original post

Mine is an 03 which I guess are slightly better than the 99 Litronic's but technically vastly inferior to today's headlights....that said, with new Osram CBI bulbs in my lights, I have yet to see anything brighter on the road. As others have said, start with a bulb change. 10 yr. old bulbs probably have half the lumens a new bulb does 3200lms. vs. 1600lms.

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 13073573

Are you sure it's the HIDs you are getting blinded by? All the factory ones I'm familiar with have a leveling system specifically to prevent that. What I find blinding is the super bright blue tinted halogens people put. Those things are horrible and of course have no functionality to keep them aimed at the road.

POST 8Original post

the 996.2 lights are actually rather good, (high beam in particular is excellent), but of course condition is key, as-is the alignment.... the newest active LED lights from Porsche/BMW/Benz/Audi/etc are the next step up.. The 'blinding' problem comes from those installing aftermarket HID 'kits' into stock reflector housings(non-projector) and the beam pattern is different from the halogen bulb and strays, plus the colour and lumens amplify the blinding...

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 13073626

Nearly every Accord, Civic, Acura, and Toyota owned by someone under the age of 30 has had HIDs stuffed into the front lights, and of course they don't have any leveling functionality - they just drive around blinding the s**t out of everyone.

POST 11Original post

OEM HID headlights are required to have auto leveling and/or measures to prevent blinding on coming traffic. You're only getting blinded by the *** holes throwing in $30 HID kits.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source posts: 13074222, 13074281

They're not HIDs. They're blue colored halogens, which is annoying enough, but the owners often aim the low beams at high beam level. FWIW, the leveling functionality just ensures that the beams are consistently aimed where they're set to be aimed. If you hit a bump in the road with standard old school halogens, you'll see your beam rise and drop on the road. HID leveling is intended to cancel that out by ensuring that the beam stays on the road where it was intended. As cars lwith HIDs leave the factory, their standard settings should prevent bumps, dips, changes in road conditions from blinding other traffic but it isn't a fail-safe by any means. Just like halogens, HIDS are also adjustable (often the crank of a **** in the engine bay in many new cars). If you adjust the standard setting upward, it will constantly "level" to that upward position. If that upward position is straight out (read: too high!) then it will (and does) blind the living !@#$ out of oncoming drivers. -Eric

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 13074222

Active leveling- no. My acura has same screws as 996 to set the base level of the headlights.

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 13074281

Not true. There are many OEM HID's that do not have auto-leveling(mainly Japanese). All the OEM German cars I've seen do have them though.

POST 15Original post

IIRC, if HID is in a projector it must be leveling, if in a (shielded) reflector housing it does not have to be; focus of beam pattern on on-coming persons

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 13076237

Not sure I've ever seen blue halogen bulbs(at least any that have any effect)...the aftermarket HID kit industry is huge and they sell them EVERYWHERE. Under $100 a kit(bulbs, ballasts, wiring) allows anyone to be a blinding pest....what 'colour' do you want? 3000k? 4300k? how about 12000k?

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 13076678

Wrong again. Ever look at Acura's? The late 90's to late 00 models have projectors and factory HID's without self leveling and some of these models are in projector housing.

POST 18Original post

Sorry I wasn't clear. I wasn't complaining about the drop in retrofits that blind everyone. Was complaining of the EU units in the newer cars that are much brighter than the first gen HIDs. The auto levle system is not fast enough to compensate for bumps and becuase they are a lot brighter than halogens, they blind the crap out of you every time the car hits a bump.

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 13076724

is their still any late 90's Acura's around? ..must be a 'for-Euro' market only thing...of course anyone can adjust 'baseline' on their self-leveling headlight...

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 13076756

Probably not up where you're at as they've probably all rusted to death. L FWIW, I have both of my cars with self leveling HID, manually adjusted up slightly to compensate for the lowered stance. Wife's '08 MDX is one of those Acura's that have HID projectors without self leveling from the factory. However I do have a pet peeve of oncoming old farts that flash you because your headlight color is whiter(not necessarily "brighter") and they think you have your high beams on. Just the other day, I couldn't figure out the logic of an oncoming driver that flashed me most likely because I have LED angel eyes(bmw) and thought I had my high beams on. The ironic thing is they had a new vehicle with LED lights too.

We do have the GT Projectors, Rennlist thread on them HERE . That being said, we have a very limited supply left with no ETA on when stock will be back into the catalog. GT-TUR-BLK is the only stock we have left currently.

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 13076791

We have such a problem with aftermarket HID's in stock reflector housings here, you'll never get flashed at for 'hot-rod' alignments on low beams What is really bad is the new Corolla's/Toyota's/Hyundai/Kia factory HID's, not sure who passed them through...completely blinding to oncoming. The 'dazzle' zone is the on-coming's eyeballs..

POST 23Original post

Pretty sure most of the new Toyota's and Honduh's are LED headlights and yes the are bright as f**k!

http://www.danielsternlighting.com/t...e/bad/bad.html http://www.bretl.com/blueheads.htm I'm telling you, a lot of those bright blue lights in econoboxes are NOT retrofit HIDs.
