(This car is my spirited road trip / weekend fun machine, but not tracked.) They replaced Hankook Ventus V-12 EVOs which were also a fantastic "performance for money" option--sadly they're no longer made in the sizes I require.

I should probably just switch brands but I've never had a Conti or Bridgestone that I liked and Pirellis seem to need to be replaced after every other trip to the grocery store.

Since they are all available in 225/40ZR18s and 265/35ZR18, I assume the problem is that the 2001s used a 7.5" rim width on the front while the 2002 and newer had 8" and my guess would be that the newer PS2 N3 or PSS have different sidewalls that don't play well with the narrower rim.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, Disclaimer: These are for a DD and maybe a very occasional DE only. To not make it too complex, my last 996.1 ended up on PS2s and I absolutely loved them. But, it had the standard 17" wheels. My new(er) 996.1 has 18" rims. They are the (very heavy) optional chromed Turbo Looks from the 993 era. I would like Michelin PS2s or PSSs on these and Tire Rack will gladly sell them but when I look on the Michelin site they only list the much older Pilot Sport N1 for 2001 and older. As far as I know, the rear width remained the same at 10". Is my assumption correct? Am I overthinking this and just throw on a set of PSSs? I'd love to swap to some HRE or later model Porsche 18" wheels but that is currently cost prohibitive. Thanks

I'm running 225/40-18 PSS on my 7.5" fronts. AFAIK, these tires are not N-rated, or at least they weren't when I bought them. That said, I've encountered no issues whatsoever. Great tire.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

KoB No they are not N-Rated and my impression is they won't be but the 991 series was one of the targets for the new design. I like the concept of N-Rated but not enough to give up newer technologies. Are you running 265/35-18 or did you bump up to 285s on the rear? I know they make a 285/30-18 PS2 but I didn't see a 285/30-18 PSS. I'll probably stick with the 265 since I really don't want any more under steer. I really liked my PS2s and from everything I've read, seems like these are PS2+s. I believe they are called PS3 in Europe. I'd probably be perfectly happy with PS2s as well but why pay more for less? pesuazo, yes it certainly does. I'm going to save this as a reference. Thanks.

POST 5Original post

PS3 = Pilot Super Sport The PSS is the newer more advanced (?) tire N rating, well lots of opinions, but mainly a whole lot of nothing

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

After re-reading I should clarify. I really liked my PS2s and from everything I've read, seems like the PSSs are PS2+s. I believe they are called PS3 in Europe.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

JayG Thanks, thought I read that somewhere. I don't mind (too much) paying a little more for Porsche's seal of approval on something as important as tires but not enough to go back two generations in tire technology. I think I read somewhere that N-rated tires can only be made at the parent plant of the manufacturer. Knowing my Michelins came from the French plant mattered as I have had nearly-new tires blow out, including Michelins. Never had a failure on an N-rated tire. I've tried a few different manufacturers and probably am passing on a few great deals (like the Sumis I keep hearing about) but Michelins are the only tires I've found that were grippy, quiet and had reasonable wear since the Dunlops on my old 911 SC.

Here's some info on Porsche n ratings - http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete...&affiliate=HK8

POST 10Original post

Be careful, the PSS is a different tire from the PS3. Not the same at all. PSS is a Pilot Super Sport whereas the PS3 is a Pilot Sport 3 sold in Europe after the PS2 or on some specific and optional summer OE fitment (Honda Civic SI for ex). Now Michelin is launching the Pilot Sport 4 in Europe. The Pilot Sport 3 and 4 are more for hot hatchback or sport sedan in Europe. The Pilot Super Sport is THE tire world wide to use on any sports car like Porsche, Ferrari, Vette ... Here is a link on the Michelin website with the rim width tolerance: http://www.michelinman.com/US/en/tir...tail-sku-table So to answer your question yes it fits on 7.5 but it is not the nominal width the tire has been developed for. There is a standard tolerance set by the Tire and Rim Association for each size. You will not find necessary N rated PSS in 17 or 18" because when there were developed Porsche was launching the 911 with 19" and above. The Michelin OEM fitment for the 996 is the PS2 (N rated) in both 17 or 18" and yes it is a perfect fit for the car because it was tuned for the 996.

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

DinoSC I think we are getting to the heart of my thinking on this. Thanks for the link to the PSS specs. I had not noticed the more data part with rim width data before. My "concern" is I believe the 18" PS2 is also designed for an 8" width on the front. When I look at the Michelin fitment guide for the 996.1 it lists the Pilot Sport N1 as the "correct tire" for 18". The PS2, in 18" is only listed for 2002 and newer, thus 8" width rim. I had the PS2s in 17" on my previous 996.1 and really like them. If I look at the latest Porsche Approved tires list I have, August 2014, Porsche does not list any Michelin tire in 18". I should probably just switch brands but I've never had a Conti or Bridgestone that I liked and Pirellis seem to need to be replaced after every other trip to the grocery store. I think I am going to get the PSSs as everything I read says they are even better than the PS2 and it looks like neither the PS2 or PSS are optimized for a 7.5" rim. No way, even if I could find them, would I put on a Pilot Sport N1. That's two (now actually three if you consider the PS4) generations old. Since the 7.5" is within the tolerance range. It should work okay but maybe a little "spongy" around corners. Certainly less than ideal for a Porsche and I'm not really keen on even more understeer but since I don't plan to track them comfort and quiet for long rides trumps optimal cornering but only by a slim margin. I really like Michelins but it kind of ticks me off that they don't have a modern fitment for our now "classic" Porsches. I'll probably switch to 8" width rims in the future. Of course even those are becoming obsolete with all of the modern cars being 19" and up. I'm a little unfair I guess because they do have a fairly modern fitment as long as I don't mind going down to 17s.

POST 12Original post

I have 225/40-18 PSS on a 7.5 wheel and 265/35-18 on a 9" wheel and they are fine http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....S&autoModClar= don't fixate on N tires

POST 13Original post

I think PSS are the right choice for you. They are a lot better than the PS2 (newer technology on tread compound that makes them faster on dry and way better on wet and lasting longer with 30k miles warranty versus 20k). Sidewalls are very stiff so that I don't think you will feel any spongy effect. To solve all concern you could get a set of 18" wheels for 996 mk1. I hope you enjoy them!

POST 14Original post

At the risk of being burned at the stake...since you plan to use your car almost exclusively as a DD, consider running something other than Michelin. You pay a huge premium for the little bit of extra performance Michelins deliver, which in a DD you'll rarely or never use. FWIW I run Bridgestone S-04s on my '02 996 Cab and am very happy with them. My experience is the same on my Porsche & Lexus IS350, Except the PSS has the softest sidewall I have ever flexed of any HP tire! I add 3psi to rear tires to compensate.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks guys. I'm pretty sure I'm going to order the PSSs. If I have trouble getting them, I'll probably get the S-04s since they also seem to be very good just my personal experience with Bridgestones has not been too positive. The 17" PS2s on my last 996 really impressed me. Having even better tread life with the PSS and, at least theoretically, better braking clinches it. One of the real strong points besides the performance with the PS2s was their quiet ride. I don't mind a loud car as long as it is the engine that is loud. I'm hoping the PSSs are as quiet. It makes a difference on long trips and it is a DD so noise and ride matter, just not as much as going where you point them and stopping the car. I'm going to keep my eyes open for a decent deal on a pair of 18x8 chrome turbo looks just because I'm just a bit OCD as well. Then I'll stop fretting over the stupid 1/2 inch.

POST 19Original post

That's surprising about the Bridgestones. I've been using Potenzas on road and track for the last 5 years or so. I haven't felt any difference in handling or wear from the original Michelins my car had but the price to replace has been more reasonable. Can't go wrong with the PSS but just expect to pay a little more for them.
