I actually replaced these on my car (along with the cables) because one tube had totally seized (and the cable had broken) and the other was well on its way.

I used a fair amount of Aluminum anti-seize paste on the tube and the end of the cable sheath.

I'd recommend pressing them in as far as they go, and using that location as the basis for adjusting the cables.

Not sure if that 5/8 inch is meaningful here and cannot be adjusted with the cable itself.

That part is also relatively cheap as it's about 10 usd/eur/gbp so if the cable and that pipe is almost completely seized - as it was in both of my cases even though I did get the other cable out - it actually makes sense to replace both.

Tried then to use 13mm metal drill bit to get the remains out - sort of success but couldn't telll from the bits if I got that tube out as both the tube and the wheel carrier are both aluminium.

If I used 14mm drill then it would go in quite easily and like dporto says it won't fit tightly so I'm wondering what's the proper way to install that tube.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Ah, this unfortunate handbrake saga continues. This time I managed to break that aluminium pipe that is pressed into that wheel carrier.
Basically close to what happened this British guy ->

Now any solutions ? - does anyone know anybody who could manufacture that aluminium pipe with dimensions 14mm (OD) x 12mm (ID) x 80mm length? If I'm lucky I might find a machinist shop here in Finland but I'm holding my breath before that...
Or any other creative ideas? Buying just a used/new wheel carrier because of this is not a tempting idea....
That's actually a buyable part... part # 14 in this diagram...

I actually replaced these on my car (along with the cables) because one tube had totally seized (and the cable had broken) and the other was well on its way. Just as a note, the new tubes don't fit particularly tightly (this could be why they corrode so badly) - they just kind of sit in place and are held by the tension on the emergency brake cable. I used a fair amount of Aluminum anti-seize paste on the tube and the end of the cable sheath.

Thanks - excellent news - I guess I didn't pay attention enough to that diagram earlier

Ok, back to this topic as I got the cables + tubes. I tried with M14 tap as I had that one available - it bite but not enough.
I guess that pipe should have some kind of support inside so should I drill with 14mm but leave some kind of a "edge" - or what's the english word here - inside of that hole so that the tube would be pushed against that so that it wouldn't come out of the other (wheel hub) side.
As I forgot to measure the depth how deep that goes inside I'm wondering if someone had that info available somewhere - the tube itself is 75mm in length. I wonder how deep is the part outside of the wheel carrier.
Thanks so 2.5in is about 63mm - I have both currently at ~58mm (2.28 in) - which was an estimate based on the broken part that I used as guide. Perhaps that's close enough considering that the cable itself is adjustable and 5mm probably wouldn't make a difference for that cable cover.
I would imagine that the tubes will bottom themselves out in the carrier when the handbrake cable is placed under tension. Cable housing getting shorter is the equivalent of the cable getting longer. I'd recommend pressing them in as far as they go, and using that location as the basis for adjusting the cables.
Hmm... at the moment there's maybe 5/8 inch to the bottom of the carrier - or... 75-58 = 17mm or so.
That tube seems to be straight and not tapered so there should be some kind of an edge close to the bottom.
Not sure if that 5/8 inch is meaningful here and cannot be adjusted with the cable itself. Well, I guess I need to test that and see how it works.
