Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok, this forum is admittedly making me neurotic. At idle my engine has a faint clicking sound -- more like a chain turning over. Not like the ticking sound that I hear from bore scoring videos. Here's a video with the mike moving from driver to passenger side undercarriage. It is quite faint in person. Any thoughts? Thanks! You Tube

POST 2Original post

So my initial thought is don't worry unti you have to worry. After getting neurotic myself, I reread all the IMS threads and while there's a definite possibility of a failure with this or any other component on the car, some preventive maintenance and then regular maintenance should give us many years of joy. That said, I am having the IMS solution done when I put her away for the winter. For approximately $2000 it's good insurance for peace of mind in the future. I ope others can chime in to isolate your ticking sound and reassure you that it's normal.

POST 3Original post

ewc: Wished mine sounded that good. I'm no expert but sounds like "normal" engine noises to me.

Quoted above from your recent RND Bearing thread. I was curious how long this was going to last. Hypervigilance/paranoia will surely prevent you from doing so. I know easier said than done but either just drive/enjoy the car or sell it.

POST 6Original post

^^^^ Yup! Been there done that as a new owner. I didn't drive mine as much as I should have when first acquired due to irrational paranoia that told me every time I started it, it might blow-up. I still listen on start, but drive it more and enjoy the heck out of it. If it blows up, it blows up and I will worry about that after it happens.

LOL guilty as charged! Thanks everyone, getting to know the car today and out for some nice driving. 👍🏽

POST 9Original post

Mine does this too, usually after a few days of not driving. I have stopped worrying about it.

POST 10Original post

Sounds ok to me mine makes the same noise on both sides and I have had the rear end up today for a good listen, sounds like the noise coming from the fuel injectors , I don't think you need to worry!

Mine, and every seemingly healthy water cooled 911 sound just like this when you're right up close. I've always thought it was the injectors as well. Related, recently saw a MotorTrend video on the 911R where the presenter was excited that you could hear this same ticking from inside the cabin due to lack of sound deadening.

POST 12Original post

Sounds good. These rear mounted engines sound different than others. You want neurosis, get an air cooled P-car.

POST 14Original post

Im going to resurrect this thread by @ewc just to say, damn I need that video! Im in the exact same forum-neurosis boat and need to hear a normal 996, but sources are almost nonexistent and that video is gone. There will always be noobs that need help!

POST 16Original post

@Mike Murphy is a steely-eyed missile man! Thanks, that does help a lot and puts me slightly more at ease.

POST 17Original post

Great! Theres really only a few noises on the 996 you have to watch out for. A knock that sounds like a bad lifter is one. The other is a cold start rattle. The other is a rattle at all temps that sounds like marbles in a can. These are often bore scoring, tensioner/pads, IMSB. Those are the big ones. Other than that, other noises like super loud fuel injectors, or a screech or scream or squeal - those are usually not catastrophic issues as long as you dont drive the car, since one could be a failed AOS, while the other is a cold start secondary air injection, a bad pulley or accessory, etc. Some seemingly bad noises can also be a loose catalytic panel, exhaust issue/leak, loose spark plug, and in one case, a coolant hose was banging against the car body.

POST 18Original post

Based on your video I think I sound OK. But that damn Jake Raby and his excellent series on bore scoring had me freaking out that my new-to-me 996 might have some scoring. Im still going to pull the sump plate and scope it just to be sure. Jakes Rennvision videos contain a wealth of info, but when youre just starting out it can be a tricky rabbit hole of info to process!

POST 19Original post

Part of the Porsche 996 ownership has a good amount of freak out that comes with it. The best plan is to save about $30k, set it aside, and tell yourself, this is life with a Porsche and its 1000x better than paying $50k for a minivan or getting cancer, or losing a limb. And then if you dont have a major repair, then you still have your $30k. If you post a video, Im sure some folks will weigh in.

POST 20Original post

I need this exact video today! I don't currently own a 996, but I'm on the hunt. I came across this one and the seller seems to think it needs some work because it blew a little smoke while he was driving. I posted another video a couple weeks ago of one that clearly needed work, but this one sounds fine to me... or at least I think so. You Tube

POST 21Original post

This one sounds pretty normal. Theres a slight periodic tick that sounds like injectors.
