Not sure of the flange nuts, I used a telescopic pen magnet; you'd probably be able to extend it and pull out the original.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Im really struggling figuring out how to get out or even see the rear window regulator for a cabriolet. Is there any pictures of this operation out there. I cant seem to find them. Or can you point out from this picture what bolts need to be removed to yank the regulator

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ive seen the renntech link but its confusing.

POST 3Original post

1st remove the 2 bolts circled and pull that plastic piece up and out so you can see down to the regulator

POST 4Original post

Red is a nut that comes off. Yellow are bolts, total of 4 but 2 are outside of your photo. After you loosen these you can push the convertible mechanism forward enough to pull out the regulator.

POST 5Original post

You will need to put the window down, if you cant you will easily see how to remove the glass with 2 nuts on clamps. There are 2 nuts to remove you will see at the top of the regulator. You will see the bottom nut that is just loosened, not removed, on the end of a stud at the bottom of regulator. You get to this nut going through hole for wiring harness.

OP, see attached file. This pdf document is for the 997 rear windows, I believe the 996 and 997 had virtually similar rear window systems. Hope it helps.

POST 7Original post

Make sure you put some towels under your work area. I've heard if you drop a nut or bolt down in there, it is impossible to get and you will be looking for replacements. Magnetic sockets are a good idea.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

You guys are awesome thanks for the help, Ill see what I can do,

Were you able to get around to working on this? I have the same issue and ordered the parts to fix the regulator, but am still skeptical about how to take it all apart and back together again. Thanks

POST 10Original post

Completed this project over the weekend. Took much longer than expected, but for a total of $60, I think it was worth the effort.

POST 11Original post

How do I get off the screw in the red circle? Nothing fits into that space!

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 17641260

I had to loosen and unscrew the convertible hydraulics in front to allow for space to get my extended wrench in.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 17641347

Did you actually have to take off the hydraulic? Or did just loosing it do the trick? The problem is that curved bracket that's connected with some metal clips doesn't seem to allow much movement of the hydraulic even with the bolts out. But maybe I'm just being too gentle.

Nevermind, I got it. The thing is out. Now to replace the parts and reinstall. Anyone know the size of the upper flange nuts that hold the regulator in place? It's now part of the inside of the car.

POST 15Original post

Glad you were able to get it out. Not sure of the flange nuts, I used a telescopic pen magnet; you'd probably be able to extend it and pull out the original.

I got the job finished, thanks to the help of this site. To add to the knowledge for future home mechanics. -I had to loose the hydraulic piston for the roof and take off the metal curve piece that is held onto the hydraulic and the roof assembly, The piece is held into place with these little metal clips, they pop off with a small flat head screw driver and go back on fairly easily. This was all to get to the flange nut in the red circle. -The bolts are M8 1.25 flange Nuts. This holds the upper portion of the window regulator. they sell packs of them at Advance auto parts. The other thing I would add was it was kind of pain to get the new plastic pieces back onto the regulator, a helper was very useful to hold the assemble down while the other person pushed the plastic wheel back into place. If the other side breaks, Ill use the company in AZ. sounds like they use metal parts instead of the plastic parts that come in the kit from amazon.
