Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm close to finalizing a deal on an 04 4S cab. Already thinking us some updates. I'd love to hear what people have done or recommendations. My list so far: Storage bin - replacing cd storage Speakers front/rear and sub Clear side markers Sirius radio, but I want to keep head unit RMS/IMS when clutch gets replaced

POST 4Original post

I added an auto-dimming rear view mirror with Homelink. That was a nice upgrade.

POST 5Original post

my 2 cents: focus on FUNCTION first (i.e. maintenance interval items) before FORM

POST 6Original post

^^^ Agreed. Address any needed mechanical work before you do anything. THEN, I recommend: - Exhaust (Fister, Gundo hack or Fabspeed are the most popular) - Suspension (M030 if you want an OEM upgrade, or a set of coilovers will really transform how the car drives) - Clear corner lights - Aftermarket stereo (seriously, just spend the $200 for a decent Pioneer or Alpine unit with Bluetooth and iPod integration) - Short shifter (997 short shifter is a popular one)

POST 7Original post

List your priorities and budget for better and customized answers to YOUR needs/wants. "I want to build a house...."

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 11150477

Yes, absolutely agreed! Focus on FUNCTION-FIRST

POST 10Original post

I've dyno'ed a lot of 996's & 997's with all different exhaust configurations from ours & other manufacturers - the best bang for your buck as far as exhaust power gains are concerned on a 997S are Fabspeed's Sport headers. X51 headers produce the same peak power, but our Sport Headers produce noticeably more low & mid range torque, which is where most of your driving is spent.

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 11150477

Yes! Baseline the maintenance first, then start modifications. Personally I most enjoy my "fister" style mufflers ($60 local exhaust shop) and 997 shifter with EvoMS SwiftShift. Though when I do suspension this spring it may jump to the top of the list.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 11150946

What about for 996 since this is the 996 forum? I think owners here will care less on what goes on for 997s cars.

POST 14Original post

One outstanding mod that will improve visibility and make driving safer is a clip-on wide view mirror. Pay for quality - I paid about $75 on Amazon and consider it the best accessory I've ever purchased and would never go back to the stock mirror.

POST 15Original post

Honestly; I'd say just drive the car for 3 months to see if you're hit with any unexpected issues/costs, and then start thinking about mods. You will have a better idea for yourself what you'd want out of it as well!

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Seems like service and preventative is the first thing to focus on. It also appears this car doesn't need a lot if mods or upgrades...

POST 17Original post

POST 18Original post

not sure this applies to 2004, Cab hack $Free (cut wire to enable closing/opening at any speed, try not to go too fast) Smart Top $400 (open top with key fob), illegal in Canada for manufactures to offer that not sure about USA i would think with more litigious system would be the same). Its pretty cool to be walking to car press key fob and the top opens, or closes it as you walking away.

POST 19Original post

just in case for future reference on the smart top , which would be a sweet feature for the cab! http://www.mods4cars.com/support/kno....php?article=5

POST 21Original post

Have the engine rebuilt, just to be safe. You never know.. Tick tick tick tick......

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 11151566

In terms of bolt-on performance upgrades, there isn't a whole lot you can do with these cars without resorting to high-dollar builds (like forced induction, head work, etc.). Porsche did a pretty good job of wringing out all the power they can make from the factory. In terms of aesthetics, the sky is limit in terms of options, but that's more a matter of personal taste. Personally, I think less is more with these cars; and I think you'll find that's the general consensus around here.

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 11153491

So worthy of quoting that it should be a sticky. If you want more power out of your 996, sell it and buy a TT or GT3. Because in the end that will be more cost effective. I'm convinced that my Fister style mufflers and EvoMS intake added exactly zero HP to my C2, but they were worth every penny for making it sound like a Porsche.

POST 25Original post

I second the driving for three months bit. Although you've now probably driven it for 4 extra months so I'd be interested to see what you've done. I've owned performance cars before, but picked up my first 911 996 last week. I'm planning on just keeping an eye on the CEL, and any ticks, bangs and other weird things going on first for the next two or three months to get used to it. Then I'll throw in a short shifter, half roll cage and better coils etc as it's going to be a part time track car. Only thing I've done so far is update the stereo head unit and fix the speakers, as who ever the moron was who's played with the electrics at some point had completely taken out the door speakers and tried to do a diy bluetooth hands free that just........well it was just wrong. So all came out and got replaced with a neat finish by a professional. Any smart man never lets me near a big tool kit. Also the tinting got redone as it had a cheap job at some point and it was all purple and peeling. I'm sure it's illegal in Florida to drive a 911 with bad purple tint at least as far as other Porsche owners go That's my two cents

POST 32Original post

I have an '03 Cab that I have had for about 3 years and have done the following mods. I can honestly say I haven't regretted a single one. - Handling - H&R lowering springs w/ Bilstein HDs, Dunlop Durezza ZII's - Breathing - FabSpeed Exhaust, Xpipe 200 cell cats and FabSpeed CF competition intake - Aero - Cup car splitter - B&M SSK - Interior - iPad mini integration w/ Bluetooth hands free calling (kept factory Bose system); leather rear center console; ashtray delete, Llyod's matts piped in red, grippy pedals, DCTMS T96 flat bottomed steering wheel (waiting on this to come in). - Track time - very important if you want to really learn drive this machine anywhere near its capabilities. While I don't consider them mods I also have done several maintenance items, IMS, clutch, brakes, fluids, magnetic drain plug, upgraded oil (DT40 Joe Gibbs), replaced ignition, head light switch, frunk and engine compartment struts, various micro switches, expansion tank and top. Great thing about these cars is you can really make it your own and enjoy the hell out of it. Sent from my iPad using Rennlist

POST 38Original post

I'd really go for a fister mod on your mufflers. Cheap and the results are great.
