Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My car has it's very first drip. Based on where it was on the garage floor I initially thought RMS or oil filter. Upon closer inspection it is coming from the bottom of what I have circled in the pricture. The drip collects where the arrow is pointing two. What is this cover? Now for the strange part. The drip actually smells sweet and I think it may be coolent. Where would coolant be coing from in location to this? thanks in advance.

POST 2Original post

The oil cooler above uses coolant to cool the oil. Possible O-ring issue?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

New oring 12K miles ago when engine was out. cant rule it out just cause they are new though.

Your red circle surrounds the bolt-on endcap for the coolant manifold. You need to replace the gasket. Gasket is cheap, coolant is not.

POST 5Original post

I had that leak before. Byprodriver is right that it's coolant behind. I think about 1gal will gush out if you remove it. Don't buy the gasket. Just but the cover, which has a built-in rubber gasket.

POST 6Original post

ANYONE........Can I see the red circled cover from under the car. I mean without having to remove anything? I would like to check mine. Maybe replace it as PM work....

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Lay on the ground and look past the oil filter up a little higher. I assume the engine must be dropped to do this? Can't see how it can be done with engine in the car. Searched the Pet for part number without luck. Hope someone can provide it for me

POST 8Original post

Don't need to drop the engine. It's right there after you jack up your car and look. The part is 99610101600 Keep in mind coolant will gush out when you remove that cover.

Thanks. Will look when the weather gets warmer.

POST 11Original post

Anytime, guys. The rubber gasket behind hardens and that causes the leak. Very nice hi-res photos here. http://www.ecstuning.com/Search/99610101600/ES1482639/

Any idea what the torque value is supposed to be for those 2 bolts? Also, any thoughts on using yamabond in addition to the metal gasket...

POST 13Original post

There is no metal gasket. Look at the link above where you can see the back of the cover, there's a rubber gasket like an o-ring. The two bolts are small so I just tightened them up by feel. Really doesn't take much force to seal.

I have a 2001 996 and i don't have the rubber gasket. Mine has the metal gasket that is the same material as the water pump gasket. I am rebuilding my engine and am at this step right now...can't find the torque spec for this in the shop manual.

POST 15Original post

Gotcha. If those are M6 bolts, 7.5ftlb should be good.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ahsai - how much coolant would you say comes out of here when the plate is removed? My drip stopped for a while but is back so am getting mentally prepared thx Brian

I think it's same as having the drain plug removed i.e., 2.5gals

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
