Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Be sure the IMSB was replaced at the same time the RMS and clutch were done.
Leading evidence: 'Replace be sure the imsb' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check $700-900 part line item' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The importance of replacing the OE IMSBs on M96 engines has become "conventional wisdom" in p-car circles to the point that I suspect many flippers and some used car dealers claim their 996/997s have replacement IMSBs, but don't.

Suggestion
I'd recommend having 5K available (doesn't mean you will actually use it, but it should be available), which should cover quite a bit of common maintenance/repair items that may pop up over the next year.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm considering a 2003 996 with 98000 miles.
Clutch, rms and isb were replaced at 88,000.
Price is +/- $18,000. PPI is scheduled and if all looks OK I'll move forward.
Any thoughts on price and longer term serviceability?
I'd say that is a fair price compared to what I've seen listed privately and at dealerships. Especially since the preventative maintenance has been done relatively recently and with the newer clutch. What options does it have?
Just a caution. Be sure the IMSB was replaced at the same time the RMS and clutch were done. Sometimes a reference to anything with the letters 'I', 'M', 'S' and 'B' refer to the IMS end flange. It is SOP to replace this when doing an RMS as it is often the iMS end flange (or its bolts) leaking oil and not the RMS.
Be sure you get a thorough test ride then test drive before the PPI. You want to experience the car in its natural setting with the engine running and on the road being used.
Price I can't help you with much other than to point out that various web sites can be used to get some kind of whole sale or trade in value for the car. If the car is in acceptable shape/condition then it is worth something between its trade-in/wholesale value and the however much you are willing to pay.
Try to learn when the plugs were last changed. When the brake/clutch fluid was last flushed/bled. Budget for a coolant drain/refill and a tranny/diff fluid service unless you have paperwork showing these were done that they are not now due.
Also, be sure you have set aside say 10% (or maybe 15%) of the car's price for just in case. Even if your check out of the car and the PPI turn up no issues, very soon after you take possession of the car something can turn up. A water pump can develop a leak. The fuel pump can fail. You can get a flat tire and have to replace both on the same axle.
Thanks for your thoughts, especially the tip about the IMS flange vs. actual bearing...I need to re-visit the maintenance records before next weeks PPI.
Check for a $700-900 part line item with LN referenced. That is your clue it was done.
As to the price I agree it's fair if the car is clean and good working condition currently.
I agree... based on the very limited info. we have so far, price seems good assuming there are no obvious issues.
As Master says, be sure to have a budget for items that may pop up later. I'd recommend having 5K available (doesn't mean you will actually use it, but it should be available), which should cover quite a bit of common maintenance/repair items that may pop up over the next year.

Be advised: Closely examine paperwork and then contact the shop that allegedly performed the installation for confirmation. Absent such confirmation, it didn't happen!
