Well, even though it reads like you have some freedom of choice up there my preference would be a pair of good used converters off a car that is of the same general vintage (MY) as your car.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Recently getting a rattle from left side CAT but no faults yet. I have PSE mufflers and like the sound but am up in the air on what to do about CATs now. I've read all the threads about fabspeed x-pipe but don't want to part with the $3000 right now(US exchange rate not good for us Canadians right now). I found a direct replacement CAT on autopartsway.ca for $509 Canadian shipped. Made by DEC, has both O2 sensor holes. here's the link http://www.autopartsway.ca/partlist..../pagenum1/tabs But have no knowledge on if they are any good , say EPA compliant Canada and 48 States.... Anyone used or heard of these CATs???? Thanks in advance

POST 2Original post

Yes, these have been around for a few years but I've never heard of anyone using them. You may want to consider the 200 cell cat exchange from Carnewal if visual smog check is an issue.

POST 3Original post

Call Whale Tail and ask Randy if he has a good used one. That aftermarket one will not last as long as the factory unit.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks, I was thinking of used from Randy or 9apart but used could crap out in a month. I sent off for quote from carnewal, never heard of them before. I'll keep you posted

POST 5Original post

I replaced mine a few years ago with 200 cell x-pipe cats from Maxspeed Motorsports. One of my cats started rattling after a track day. I researched it quite heavily at the time. I called 9apart but his used pipes were overpriced and I didn't get a warm-and-fuzzy after speaking with them. I spoke with Randy since I live around the corner from him but he didn't have any at the time. Maxspeed Motorsports is out of Montreal but they have moved their shipping to Florida. Nello (the owner) took quite a bit of time answering my questions and I've been very happy with the purchase. Quality was excellent and it definitely improved the sound even before I had Fister-hacked my mufflers. I'm pretty convinced it improved the top-end power a bit. I have noticed that the cold-start idle is a little rough that could be due to the drop in backpressure but it doesn't bother me. Installing was straightforward although a bit time consuming getting the old cats out. I still have both of my old cats. If you are interested I could let them go cheap assuming they are the same as the C4S (I think so). Unfortunately I'm not 100% sure which of the two cats were rattling (and they don't rattle when shaken) but I can get a camera in there to see if the damage is visible.

POST 6Original post

What are the emissions rules/regulations up there? If you can do it, my advice would be to seriously consider sourcing a pair of compatible converters from a Porsche salvage business and having these installed. Be sure you give the "new" converters a shake test for any signs of something loose inside. After you buy the things handle with care. If you drop one even throw them around a bit they can suffer from a brick coming loose and you are back where you started. If rules/regulations prohibit using used converters then there are -- for USA owners -- EPA approved converters.. A local exhaust system specialist should be able to call this list of approved converters up and recommend a pair for your car. I have no recommendation for any aftermarket exhaust/converter solutions as I have no experience with any of them.

OB2 check (via test software) - Cat visual check. No limits on 'type' - does not have to be OEM, only that it does it's job and that there are no codes referencing emissions. Many people run Fabspeed 'type' 200 cell without issues.

This is his default mode. It's like dealing with Seinfeld's soup ****. I went there ONCE and would never go back even if he were the last parts supplier on earth. I have dignity.

POST 9Original post

Check into Brombacher, I have their 200 cell cats and x pipe set-up. I went in this direction when I lost another OEM cat. No issues, sounds great, too! GL

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It's funny you say that about 9apart, I thought it was just me. Last time I called him, I got off the phone feeling angry and sad at the same time.... Still waiting on pricing for getting cats rebuilt with 200 cell

POST 11Original post

The replacement CAT on autopartsway.ca is priced ok, I believe OEM cats are $1500 a piece. I have a complete new set that I took off right after my last ones where replaced under warranty and I switched to the fabpspeed xpipe setup. Though not willing to let them go as they are worth too much.

Well, even though it reads like you have some freedom of choice up there my preference would be a pair of good used converters off a car that is of the same general vintage (MY) as your car. The converters will bolt right up and are actually quite good. They are efficient so the DME and its monitoring of the #2 O2 sensors won't find anything to squawk about and barring the occasional bum one are pretty robust. I sourced a pair for my Boxster at $450/each, less than half the cost of new factory units. Tech installed them in no time. The "new" pair are quiet -- one of the originals was emitting a racket of noise -- knocking when cold and buzzing when hot -- and the intermittent CEL with a P0430 error code is no more.

POST 13Original post

Cargraphic makes some amazing high flow cats and they shipped super fast from Germany when I bought mine. They even bought my old busted ones from me.

POST 14Original post

+1 for Maxspeed Motorsports. My situation was very similar to Kgoertz and I also went with the high flow, 200 cel cats (not x-pipe). My tech had no trouble with the install & no CEL. I don't think there is any noticeable power increase; if they are louder, I cannot tell. The best part is they have a lifetime warranty and are approved for track use. That is why I took Fabspeed off of my list; they will not warranty their cat products, if used on the track. Anthony @ Fabspeed suggested their x-pipe/high flow cats set up for street, then buy a set of cat bypass for the track. Swapping back & forth is not something I am interested in. Nello @ Maxspeed provided good & timely support; I recommend them.

POST 15Original post

Check with Speed Venture, I have their X pipe with the 200 cell high flow cats, in my car. I've had it for about three years now and I never get tired of that sweet sound
