A few years back a CarMax sales person said they use Edmunds TMV as a reference price when they buy.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Took the P-Car (2002 Carrera 996 w60k miles) to Carmax to get the trade in value. They only offered me $12k..I was really taken back. What a top off
...
Carmax is one of the lowest in the industry because they take the 'hassle' out of selling a car too. They would be one of the last places I would consider selling a car.
They gave me 21k for 2010 tacoma. Which was higher then private sale. But before that i took in my 2005 CLK500 and they only gave me 10k, while at the same time they had one exact car on their lot listed for 24k. So i gave them the finger and sold it on autotrader for 18k.
I'd love to see their model for used car pricing. I've heard some interesting stories. Some people trade-in their leased cars that are over mileage and get good deals at carmax.
They are automotive professionals who are in the market to make a profit. When they buy a car they will have to put some money in it...even if just giving it a PPI for their own protection before they sell it. And when they sell it, they need to know that it is competitive in the market. On top of that they have to pay saleries and liability and health and unemployment insurance and property rental and taxes and phone bills and electric bills and advertising costs and state and local income and business taxes and interest on the money they used to buy the car until they sell the car...and all before they can declare they even made money on the car. This is the same for any car dealer.
Private parties do not have these costs nor responsibilities so they can be much more flexible in their prices.
Last year when my 2003 C2 Cab was for sale, I took it into CarMax just to see what they would offer me. 70k miles and in very good condition. They offered me $17K.
Anybody who thinks they are going to get more than 70% of what they would actually sell their car for at CarMax is smokin' crack.
I brought my 97 A8 in there many years ago, they offered me $3K, I sold it in one day privately for $9K.
They are only going to wholesale that car at one of their own auctions. They offered you below wholesale to make sure they didn't lose money on the deal - and maybe make a bit after their costs.
I just helped a non-car understanding friend sell his Mazda 3 to Carmax and he got full Edmunds TMV trade in value. Last year Carmax gave my son a very good trade in deal on his piece of crap Chrysler PT Cruiser.
I understand this completely, but their trade-in numbers were low balling all local dealerships in my area. If they would just match or get near a local dealership I would be okay with their pricing.
But they are not going to get retail value on the car. Their offer simply reflects the goal to not lose money. I suspect the are about $500 below average Mannheim Auction transaction prices for similar 996s over the past month.
The first time I used CarMax over 10 to 15 years ago, they were 2k above dealer prices. The last two times in the past 2 to 5 years, they were a little above local dealers but definitely low ball compared to retail. I think they are trying to build 5 to 7k in profit and more on the 996s. I took my 40th AE in to get an estimate for another purpose and they offered 25k, and I had received a 39k offer a bit later from a private party. Would not sell a 996 to CarMax. Stick to AutoTrader etc.
A few years back a CarMax sales person said they use Edmunds TMV as a reference price when they buy. I've taken two cars in there for a quote and it was spot on with TMV.
For a car dealer, I found their offers to be pretty fair. I never sold to them yet, but if I would sell to them before trading a car in somewhere else.
I was told that they have their own algorithm that looks at sold values of similar cars in a 500? mile radius and then applies a similar trade in Vs retail cost % to it. They also have some "rules" they go by. I was told that European cars with more than 100K are considered almost worthless, regardless of condition, due to buyers prejudice against them.
+1 to that.
I sold my 996 to them to avoid the neurotic would be Porsche buyers and BS associated with selling 140k mile 911. Carmax people were upfornt about my car going straight to the dealer auction from them as mileage was too high to be on the lot. Their offer of $10k was within $1,500 of the trade-in value; and if you account for the fact that car needed rear tires and new windshield, I thought it was very fair.
Carmax offers great deals on late model/low mileage cars on trade-ins, as they put those cars on the lots. Aging and high mileage supercars are POS ****boxes they push to the dealers, hence their offers would be lower. If you have a low mileage 996, Carmax is not your friend. If you have a higher mileage/rougher/engine about to die 996, they are prefect!
IMS or other pending engine failure whether it may be perceived or false alarm or real.
IMS Guardian = Carmax trade-in sensor
Metal in the oil = Carmax trade-in time
Funky noises that spook owners into not wanting to find out any further = Carmax trade-in time
Burning through a quart every 1k miles = Carmax trade-in time
I don't condone any of these behaviors but they do happen.
