It it looks immaculate I will go that route, but the right pillar issue is a concern for me, although according to the car fax this happened at ~2500 miles.
Leading evidence: 'concern' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'concern' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check cab roof operation at least 10 times' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Lots of used 996s out there without accidents to consider.

I would get the PPI guy (not the dealer) to check the cab roof operation at least 10 times because of the pillar accident.
Check on these models and how everything is supposed

But I might use the fact to negotiate a lower price if possible.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

All,
I am considering getting a 911 now that I finally earn enough to afford one! I have been cruising websites and car selling forums looking for reasonable deals. Since I live in Memphis, the actual number of good buys in my area are somewhat limited, but recently a 2002 convertible has come on the market for $18k. It has done about 98k miles.
I have not seen it in person yet as apparently it is having a fuel pump replaced, but according to the carfax report it was involved in an accident involving the right pillar. Also I suspect that the IMS has not been replaced. I intend to get Pat Williams to do a PPI if I decide to go for it.
Is there anything else I should do and does this deal seem reasonable?
Thanks a bunch in advance.
The accident would scare me away, especially with a convertible, but I suppose it depends on the level of risk associated with how much you want the car.
A PPI is a must.
It depends on how bad the accident was and how it was repaired.
I would not discount it offhand until I knew more about it.
But I might use the fact to negotiate a lower price if possible.
Also the options on the car and the overall condition are very important to desirability and pricing, neither of which you've told us about yet so it's hard to give you much feedback.
There are cars with 40K in poorer shape than others with 100K.
Definitely PPI (a thorough one) but only after you have negotiated how you and the seller will react to the results of the PPI (split costs for repairs, seller pays repairs, etc, etc).
I would get the PPI guy (not the dealer) to check the cab roof operation at least 10 times because of the pillar accident. Before you go to see it, read all there is to know about this year and what it's supposed to do from the posting at the top of rennlist page and , if you have one, 'The Essential Companion' book. There are so many little things to check on these models and how everything is supposed to function. Off the top of my head now I can think of at least 10 things. Maybe 20. If any of these are not functioning correctly as they were doing as the car left Stuttgart, and have not been addressed by the previous owner, I would side step this car. TIMHO.
I think I would pass on this one unless it just completed kicked *** through the PPI. Cast a wider net, you'll find plenty of good examples with fewer miles for that price.
R
Guys,
Thanks for all of the helpful comments. I am going to try and get a look at the car later this week, hopefully without the seller breathing down my neck, before I decide if it is worth a PPI. It it looks immaculate I will go that route, but the right pillar issue is a concern for me, although according to the car fax this happened at ~2500 miles. I would have though that if it had any serious issues they would have been fixed by know.
Thanks again,
Phil
Ask to see pictures of the car after the accident and during the repair. Drive it and be sure someone with 996 experience could perform a PPI and look at the extent of the accident repair. Lots of used 996s out there without accidents to consider.
