Fast forward April 2019 I started looking for car , initially i couldn't find anyone for sale since they only sell few of them every year, but i got a bit lucky in august when i found one, I did what I could to check the car with the help of mechanic, taking into consideration common issues listed everywhere, I gave the owner my offer and sadly he refused and asked for a much higher price then I walked away.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Good days all, this post is opened for my project of building the car i loved since my childhood. the first thread will have the story of the purchase, work done until the now ( time of initiating the post ) and my plan for the car, then i will post my questions regarding any issues instead of opening tens of new threads I- Purchase story It's been a childhood dream to buy a 911, back when I was 5 years old my father was looking for a car, we went to the official VW Audi & Porsche dealer (only one in my country), once the door opened i saw brand new 996, for twenty years i couldn't forget the feeling of the car when I sat inside of it. Fast forward April 2019 I started looking for car , initially i couldn't find anyone for sale since they only sell few of them every year, but i got a bit lucky in august when i found one, I did what I could to check the car with the help of mechanic, taking into consideration common issues listed everywhere, I gave the owner my offer and sadly he refused and asked for a much higher price then I walked away. two months passed and the guy calls me saying that he didn't find any offer better than mine, we agreed to meet and transfer the ownership, but the car got rear ended with another car hitting the door breaking the driver side glass. we agreed to reduce the price further with him sourcing the glass. II- initial problems 1- the temperature raises to about 95 c when parked, returns back to 85 when moving (Not solved) 2- The next day after picking up the car i noticed a greenish water puddle under the right radiator, what a bad luck, i took it to the mechanic and boom needed a new radiator. (Solved) 3- I noticed refrigerant smell when starting the AC (not solved) 4- rough idle (Solved... mostly) 5- light white smoke at startup with vacuum when trying to open the oil cap (Solved) 6- turn signals and hazard light do not work (Not solved) 7- Loud sound at highway speeds from one of the tires (Not solved) 8- Pops out of reverse directly after engagement (Solved) 9- Oil light comes on at stop (Solved) 10- driver's door does not open from outside (Not Solved) III- First stage of work on the car I ordered the following parts from pelicanparts, suncoast and other local vendors since the official dealer does not provide parts immediately 1- New Radiators 2- LN engineering thermostate 3- Fuel filter 4- Water pump 5- Shift cable 6- Ignition coil & spark plugs 7- LN engineering oil pump drive shaft, 997 spring and piston 8- Coolant 9- Air/Oil separator the car runs much better after all of them were replaced, but still problems 1, 6, 7 were not solved with additional problems appeared recently. IV- Problems to be solved previously mentioned in section II and: 11- Doors refuse to lock 12- O2 sensors appear in the OBD scan report 13- engine mounts are bad 14- High beam stuck on in the driver's side headlight 15- the shifter has a weird feeling and engagement 16- Seats controls do not work currently the car is in the body shop for a new paint job, the previous owner painted it at a shady workshop that just ruined the car, i am planning to paint it with cobalt blue metallic, but open for any suggestion (Blue shades only) i will order an additional set of parts soon, what should i include in it in order to solve pending issues? V- Project plan 1- Solving all major issues 2- Solving most of minor issues 3- increasing the power to 320-350 hp 4- enjoying the car for at least 5 years i hope you enjoy my journey with the car, looking forward to learn from you

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Since the car is in the body shop, i pulled the headlights to diagnose their issue, but a huge surprise was waiting for me! at the first look i saw two wires in each unit hot-wired to one of the two connectors looking inside, the internal wiring harness is completely messed up i will try to find the wiring diagram and reverse this chaos, i am wondering why on hell did the previous owner do that! based on your experience, should I try to fix it or just find another set ? (the same mess was found also in the other one)

POST 3Original post

The wiring in the headights is known to crack and deteriorate so maybe it was the po's attempt at fixing them. It mat aso be that the po attempted to change the internals at some point to an led or xenon. The headlights are pricey so i would attempt to fix.

POST 4Original post

I'm a huge fan of Porsche 'Paint to Sample' and BMW 'Individual' colors. I've been making a list of them, and blue is one of my preferred color choices. Check out these colors: Porsche Lagogrun Metallic Porsche Zenith blue Porsche Yachting blue Oslo Blue Vintage Iris blue I'm really digging Oslo Blue and Yachting Blue. If I ever buy a project car 996 that needs paint, it will get a rare PtS or Individual color no matter what the original color is.

POST 5Original post

Problem 1 - temperature - have you verified that both radiator fans are working? Problem 6, 14, 16 - Sounds like several electrical issues. If your headlight repair doesn't solve some of the issues, you may want to replace the turn signal switch assembly. They have been known to go bad. Another culprit could be the ignition switch and the light switch. When they go bad (which is a very common issue) you will have all sorts of lighting issue Problem 15 - this may be as simple as replacing bushings in the shifter. However, that being said, these transmissions are known to have issues at well under 100K miles. I just bought a replacement gearbox for one of my 996's last week and hope to have it installed in the next week or two

I checked the car again, and have the following notes As for problem 1, the fans seems to work but i think only at one speed, i forgot to mention that i replaced the fan resistor with the radiators, but i found all fans relays are missing. Now i bought new relays and going to install them asap, i hope this solve the problem. 6, 14 and 16, thanks for the input, i would replace them if the headlight repair didn't solve the issue 15, i looked into the shifter assembly, the bushings are not in a good shape, i'm considering 997 shifter. Thank you

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Long time no see, I've been tracing the electrical issues, finding more and more ruined wires everywhere, the AC strangely worked perfectly after installing the light switch, this did not solve the headlight problem. yesterday I started her up and a scary noise was coming from the motor: You Tube the car was driving fine the night, the noise faded away few minutes later. took it for a short drive with no noise at all. I tried searching and i keep getting chain tensioner, any other ideas?

POST 12Original post

That noise is scary. You say it went away after driving? When was the last oil change? Is the oil level correct?
