Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Use here' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair /upgrade' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

There is a procedure for replacing the plastic arm rest hinge with an upgraded all metal hinge.

I'll plan to remove it and test fit before cutting the strap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Good Morning Gents! I've searched a good bit this morning on the forums and the web just to make sure I'm not missing something. Has anyone removed the armrest retaining strap, or extended it so it can sit open? The wife and I just decided to try the arm rest cupholder mount, and it works great with the exception of the strap not going completely 90 degrees. Before I remove the strap by taking down the screws or rivets, has anyone done this and seen a negative side to it? From what I can tell, it will go a full 90 degrees(straight up) and clear the back tunnel perfectly. Just looking for some insight on either a better way to remove the strap to try it out, if it will work.
Cupholder Used Here
Thanks in Advance!

There is a procedure for replacing the plastic arm rest hinge with an upgraded all metal hinge. At the same time you could either remove the strap or fashion a longer strap that would allow the hinge door to go upright or maybe even angle backwards so it stays open. I think the all metal hinge kit is around $30. I also think I got it from Pelican Parts, along with the instructions for the repair in their tech section.
Also, you don't need a pop-rivet tool. I just used two pan head screws. Nice and tight. The old plastic hinge did indeed break and my cover was flopping around even when latched. There are some good you-tube videos on how to accomplish this repair/upgrade.
I think you should see about something. I just went out and looked at the center console lid, lifted it up to see the space behind the lid. I do have the strap. But I really did not see anymore room for tilting the lid backwards. I would not cut the strap yet. If you take the lid cover off (a couple of screws) then you will be able to undo the strap and see how back the lid will go. Be careful with that lid cover...it is like $700 for a black one.
The job took me maybe 5 minutes. 8 T10 screws, and 2 Phillips once the cover is slid off. Works exactly like expected now and will stand up at completely 90 degrees on my 99(maybe its the 21 year old carpet)
