I replaced the oil pressure sender unit and it never happened again.
Leading evidence: 'Replace oil pressure sender unit and it never happened' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'engine is toast' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Inspect oil and filter' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

And as an added note, i replaced the voltage regulator several weeks ago.

That would be my next step if you suspect your engine is toast.

I would be suspect of sensor failure, but approach it cautiously.

That was shorlty after i saw the engine failure message the first time..The regulator failed so i figured it was the problem..
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So i reset the indicator and took my chances..Drove fine and the oil gauge went back to normal..
Hello guys.. Twice now over the last month i have seen an ENGINE FAILURE warning on my dash.. Followed by my oil pressure gauge dropping to ZERO, then shooting up to 5.. I am kinda suspecting a sensor.. Car runs fine, no unusual sounds or knocks..But now i dont want to start it until i find out more..
2002 4S... 180,000km..
Any suggestions are appreciated!...cheers
Alot..I raced 1/4 mile for years..
Owned around 30 vehicles..
And as an added note, i replaced the voltage regulator several weeks ago. That was shorlty after i saw the engine failure message the first time..The regulator failed so i figured it was the problem.. Apparently not..
It is not "engine failure". There are few distinct messages that can pop up.
Oil can "failure indicator" message means your oil pressure sensor is crapping out. Common and happens almost to all 996s as the sensor is a POS.
"Engine Oil Pressure Too Low" is a different indicator, it may be valid as it your sensor tells the car that your oil pressure is failing. Should be taken more seriously compared to the "oil can" warning.
"Failure oil level indicator" is a message for when your oil level sensor is failed. This sensor measures the "oil bars" at start up and tells you how much oil is in the crank case.
Happened to me several times last year. I don't recall the exact error message but it sounded catastrophic. The car ran fine and the oil level was normal. I replaced the oil pressure sender unit and it never happened again.
Question is why didn't you diagnose or replace the suspected oil sensor the first time around instead of just continuing to drive it? I mean you made the effort to replace voltage regulator. If your engine is indeed toast, any chance of you being able to save part of the engine now has dramatically decreased if there's collateral damage involved.
Have you dropped the pan yet and/or inspected the oil and filter? That would be my next step if you suspect your engine is toast.
Change the oil pressure sender. ~$85 plus 1/2 hour labor.

Get it from the bottom with a thin 19mm? crows foot & wobble extension.
Given that you are getting:
1) a pressure related alert
-AND-
2) simultaneously observing your OP-indicator swinging 0-bar to 5-bar with engine rpm constant
I would be suspect of sensor failure, but approach it cautiously. I recall reading in the manual that an OP-alert message can pop up when oil is up to temp and the car hits idle and the OP drops a hair below 1-bar, and this was considered normal. I have observed this behavior in my '02 Targa down in the TX heat - and it is un-nerving. Granted in my situation the OP-indicator never drops to zero. Your situation sounds different.
First time it happened i was in the boondocks.. So i reset the indicator and took my chances..Drove fine and the oil gauge went back to normal.. When it happened the second time, i was actually pulling into my driveway.. Thats when i thought i should maybe get some opinions on the forum..But it was 4am coming home from work, and i honestly thought it said engine failure..maybe my tired brain playing tricks on my paranoid mind..
I started it today after reading the posts, ofcoarse runs perfect and oil pressure perfect..
OIL is clean..
I will get on the sensor ASAP.. I APPRECIATE THE HELP>> AWESOME FORUM>>
First, use an external oil pressure gauge and make sure othe oil pressure is good. Don't rely on on the cars gauge. If you are sure the oil pressure is good, then change the out the sensor, as others have suggested. Next time you change the oil, replace the oil pressure relief valve. It's cheap, and there's an updated version, it could be the source of your intermittent oil pressure drop.
