purchased 1 month ago from owner who was less then truthful. 03 coupe with 43k miles in very clean condition. black with beige interior. 6 speed, carfax was clean but had some paint work. only maintenance records owner had was for alternator and new battery ($1,500) from Hennessy Porsche. he was 3rd owner and had it for about 6 months. took it for a test drive and everything was fine until I entered his garage and turned on the headlights. lights came on but there was a loud tap-tap-tap noise coming from the rear. it turned out to be the retractable spoiler making the noise. the owner reached in and pushed the manual button and the noise stopped. after adjusting the price of the car, I bought it ($21k). I drove it 600 miles home and was in love with it, not at all concerned about the spoiler. but since then, when I turn on the lights, about half of the time, the spoiler acts up or the battery and oil light comes on! if I shut it off and start it again, everything is ok! any suggestions appreciated! p.s. I absolutely love the car!
Not much to go on, but you might want to test the battery. It's free, and low voltage can make even the most well sorted 996 do crazy things.
How long ago were the battery and alt replaced? I hope that trip to the dealer wasn't the seller's attempt to diagnose the same electrical gremlins.
Maybe call the service manager...if he's cool, the original work order might include customer comments about why the work was being done. Could be a waste of time, otoh it might yield something useful.
I bought a car about 2 1/2 years ago that had been serviced by Hennessey and they provided me with a complete service record for the car. It's a pain for them, they have to print out all the service records and manually blot out the prior owners name, but they did do it for me. Good luck.
