2) But, for my car, I just see all sorts of aftermarket systems that use the typical 996 NA layout with two mufflers up in the rear fenders.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

25 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've been looking for some time for an exhaust upgrade for my '00 996 NA cab, but seeing nothing on the market that fits the bill. The objectives are a simpler, much lighter setup, and a modestly more aggressive sound, but not super loud. So I am posting to see if I am overlooking something. When I search "996 exhaust," I mainly see two types of systems: 1) Systems for the GT3 or Turbo with a configuration like in an air-cooled 911 - THIS IS WHAT I WANT, BUT FOR A NA CAR: a simple 2-in, 2-out single muffler (or, with something like Billy Boat, a pair of mufflers) mounted in the rear center. Here are a couple of pics: 2) But, for my car, I just see all sorts of aftermarket systems that use the typical 996 NA layout with two mufflers up in the rear fenders. I really want to lose the ridiculous weight associated with the stock cat and exhaust system, while retaining a muffler. I took the whole cat and exhaust setup off of my prior coupe and could not believe the weight. There appears to be space in the center rear of my 996 cab where the cat pipes sit to do this. Caveats: I recognize CEL issues may have to be dealt with when deleting cats. Some additional thought on heat shielding might also be needed if using that whole rear center space differently than stock. I am debating just getting a custom setup built, but does anyone make something like this?

POST 2Original post

I too would like to drop the 50# cans. I know of GT3 system used on a 996.1 but not sure what he had to do to make it fit.

POST 3Original post

https://www.fvd.net/us-en/RES9960500...m-headers.html It's probably pretty loud, but it does delete the side mufflers.

POST 4Original post

My current setup achieves those goals from my perspective: Billy Boat exhaust + Speedtech catless x-pipe + O2 sensor extenders = Light weight, great sound, no CEL. Just bought Speedtech headers and will be adding those to the mix in the spring.

I ordered the extenders from Speedtech, they worked great. O2 sensors from Warehouse33 (no affiliation).

Wow, incredible set-up! What headers are you running?

POST 13Original post

As an alternative, here is my custom Dundonexhaust with HP extracting 4 pipe header...super light and sounds amazing on the track. It is a 996 but the engine in it is a 997S. However, the same exhaust can be used on a 3.4. Dundon Exhaust

This was first of it's kind.... don't know if more were produced but it gave us 35 more HP on the dyno plus substantially lighter.

I'll contact them to see if they have any memory of this and can replicate it. I imagine I am going to have to fabricate something custom to accomplish what I want here.
