Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

My suggestion is the oil pan needs to be dropped and inspected for metal particles .
Leading evidence: 'Inspect metal particles' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Inspect metal particles' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

The video you posted is a perfect example of an engine that is running terribly.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello everyone, thanks in advance. I joined many years ago, but I think this is my first post. I'm hoping to get into a 996 sooner rather than later, and came across this one that certainly needs work. I'm hoping maybe I can get some advice. I've done lots of reading about the AOS and engine oil overfill issues causing smoking. I also know that bore score and piston slap can be an issue. Any chance someone can give some advice about what this might possibly be?
Yet another white smoke video
My suggestion is the oil pan needs to be dropped and inspected for metal particles . Also inspect the oil filter . And finally bore scope each cylinder while the oil pan is off . You are looking for bore scoring . The video sure doesn't sound like a healthy engine . Good luck
Yikes. That looks to me like water vapor; note how quickly it dissipates. Oil smoke hangs around, water 'smoke' disappears. Also the car is not firing on all 6 cylinders. Factor in a full engine refresh or replacement.
I haven't bought it yet. I was kinda hoping it would be something less terminal like AOS, coils packs, or some other serviceable parts that I could replace myself.
The rabbit hole. Just my opinion, but you are better off finding something solid, spend the extra $ for it and less issues to have to deal with. That being said, I am in no way a mechanic to these German beauties. I am sure some have gotten good deals and sorted them out themselves, but it's a gamble and the price of an engine rebuild scares the heck out of me....after 'just purchasing' the car.

Dunno what your budget is but if you like this spec I have a similar car that doesn't have piston slap lol. I would consider selling but not actively selling. I would run from this car, there are too many nice ones out there.
could be because I have fabspeed pipes without cats?! Either way, prepare to spend roughly 10k minimum.
Where is it located? I wouldn't mind another project!
The video you posted is a perfect example of an engine that is running terribly. Not hitting on all cylinders, smoke pouring out. What else do you want to see fire and sparks? It appears you are in love. Nobody is going to be able to save you now, you have to save yourself, or else get ready to write some checks!
My wife fell in love with our first house, and despite my better judgement, we paid $15k over our minimum. Was it a great home to raise kids? Yes. Was it a good, smart purchase? No. But at least I knew that ahead of time going into it. You need to know going into this, the worst case could cost you $30k in addition to the price of the car. If you are good with that, then go ahead.
Seems like it may have sold on eBay (for the second time) for $8200. But it's still on marketplace so we'll see if the local listing actually gets marked as sold soon.
Well certainly the
current global microchip shortage,
dealerships having supply issues, as well as having low inventory, a cargo ship carrying Porsches catching fire and sinking in the Atlantic among other issues, not to mention having brown-out power grid issues, while promoting electric automobile, I think the used car market is in unknown territory.........
