Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The 996 forum is 4th most popular subforum, and about to hit 1,000,000 posts. The 928, 924/968/etc, and 993 are in the top 5. Interesting that most of these cars (not the 993) at one time were considered the worst examples, and yet, people seem to be all over them. If they were truly bad cars, they would have died off. Instead, enthusiasts have kept them alive and well.
Woohoo!
20 year-olds need to go to the doctor from time to time. Speaking of which, my ECU is off to the doctor today for a check up...
Long live the 996
I was at the Porsche event at Larz Anderson museum in Brookline, MA this weekend and it struck me that the 986 / 996 crowd - which was once very much on the outside looking into the Porsche community - is now the future of the enthusiast group. These cars have outrageous performance value for the $$$, and so many of them were made (almost 350,000 units between the two) that they are now the enthusiasts' dream platform. The event itself had a good showing of low production modern cars (991/992 GT3s etc.), many great 996s, but
very
few 993 and 964s, which were
forever
the core draw of the porsche crowd. Can't wait to see what the future holds.
I have a feeling the 991 is going to be the new 996 starting in 2027. By that, I mean, when any 911 enthusiast goes looking for the best value 911 they can get, a car thats still analog and a good price, and still new enough to daily drive, the 991 should have depreciated fully by then (15 years).

100% yes...964 guys will tell you theirs was the "last" analog; 993 same. Now the 996 crowd is taking on the "analog" mantle. IMO what's happening is that with each successive iteration of technology, every earlier iteration looks that much more basic. I'm old enough to remember when fuel injectors were exotic.
The 991 as an "analog" car is...wild. My daily driver is a 991.2 TTS (I save the 996 for weekends 😂
and it is a lot of things...but analog is not one of them.
And everyone is always like "Why are you commenting? That has nothing to do with the topic of the thread." WELL. MR. ON TOPIC. It's prolific $hitposting like this that the 996 forum is known for that will make us the kings and queens of Rennlist. Thank you very much. (Looks at post count.) And you're welcome very much.
I remember the controversy with the 964 adding power steering to the 911 fleet.
The reason the 991 is going to be analog is because, first of all, it has an ICE engine. EVs are going to start coming at us from all angles. Secondly, manual transmission. Third, naturally aspirated engine. There are probably many other reasons, but it will only appear clear once we see the successors to the 992 in the wild.
And theyre cheap! Only because they have these special needs. I have a warehouse full of great cars with special needs, and some Toyota cars that I change the oil in regularly. The German car parts suppliers love me!
I believe Ive sent their kids to doctorate degrees throughout the years. Nothing like a great German car to put a smile on your face, a pain in your a$$ and a hole in your wallet
I was at Larz, I didnt get their was a big 996 presence. Guessing 4-6 max. I could be wrong. There was a nice silver one with blacked out rims I really liked. Carrera GT was something to look at. I loved the safaris too.
I didnt see a single 968. I was hoping to work some possible trades.
Congrats to 996 forum, impressive numbers.
So, this is the interesting discussion for me....AS I have had just about every 911 until recently and sold all of them except my 996. So that speaks volumes. However, the if there is a way to look at my Rennlist stats I bet I have posted and read 99% of time on 996. Makes me ask why....so here is my list.
1) I love the 996....I am one of those crazy guys as B3freak, who likes the headlights (996.1)....reminds me of the GT1 a couple of decades ago. Hard to beat a the look of a lowered 996.
2) They are lower price to entry so as a result the crazy purists are not shaming folks as much who want to mod and make their cars their own. Though I am noticing a trend for people doing that lately...hope that dies down. Frankly, I have learned an so much from you all and have done so many of your mods on my car....both easy and hard. One
3) I love learning and the DYI folks are many with so many cool ways to fix things at low cost. This again is driven by the lower price to entry. To me this is super fun to see and the creativity of this community is crazy good. On either side of 996, it becomes a no-no to modify a car in anyway other than stock except for the real high end mods like singer.
4) The community...the folks here own a porsche because they love the car and love the hobby. THe fact that the 996 seems to be the stepchild 911, the people who buy 996s are people who love the brand are not as much into impressing the neighbor.
Anyway, this has always been my favorite forum....
I park my last analog Porsche 996 right next to my last analog BMW Z4MC. [/joke]
Honestly though cars are becoming more and more distant from the driver. Even the highly touted new GT3 is slathered in computers that are doing all sorts of things with the drivetrain, brakes, and suspension to make the car handle better and make the driver feel like a superhero. My 996, in contrast, has ABS. Is it a pure analog car? No. Is there anything besides chassis design and driver skillz (or lack thereof!) keeping it between the lines? No.
