Normally, I'm very empathic to people that have bought used stuff on eBay that turned out wrong because the seller didn't take clear pictures or didn't include part numbers.
Leading evidence: 'Use stuff' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check specific part numbers' (1 discussions). That being said, I know how you feel - you 'feel' molested and they didn't have the courtesy to use Vaseline, right?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just a heads up they will sell you RHD parts without labeling them as RHD in their ads and then they will give you the finger on return shipping back to the UK.
I don't see it man. Normally, I'm very empathic to people that have bought used stuff on eBay that turned out wrong because the seller didn't take clear pictures or didn't include part numbers. Nobody likes when the seller is very shady, but I don't see it with these people. I pulled up your transaction and cc images below. I also saw the nasty public comment you left them.
It's obvious to me by simply looking at the orientation of the gauge cluster trim that it was meant for RHD vehicles. However, even if you don't notice it, it's still your responsibility to confirm compatibility by contacting Porsche parts. You can't count on eBay's compatibility charts alone. You need call your local Porsche dealership's parts dept. I've done this many times and they're always happy to assist. I usually email first. They would have quickly alerted you to the fact that it would not fit US cars.
But let's look at the seller:

I'd assume it's a matter of buying too fast without looking carefully, but agree with the others, when the auction is in GBP, you'd assume it's RHD. In the US, we don't typically specify LHD with parts listings because it's expected. Sucks to pay $170 to return, but I honestly don't feel the seller is at fault at all. Most return policies on eBay are "buyer pays return shipping", especially when its due to their own error, so he didn't really give you the middle finger. Even Amazon sometimes does that when I return for a reason like "bought the wrong item".
.
Yeah man I'm sorry this happened to you but I have to agree - it seems like the only reason why I would avoid this seller is because I live in the USA, not because they are dishonest.
Yeah that sucks - but when buying used parts it is definitely on the buyer to ensure compatibility. Now, if you'd sent them a message with your VIN and they told you its compatible, I'd say they should eat the cost. That's why the dealers ask for the VIN - they are promising compatibility and taking the responsibility.
you work for these guys?
Nasty huh? Yeah, super nasty.
Funny how the part is upside down but you don't notice that at all.
Also, maybe just saying RHD would be a solid?
Whatever dude.
a. pretty easy to miss they're in UK
b. they even argued themselves that they sell LHD, RHD, to customers all over the world. But I should assume, got it.
We all genuinely feel bad that you had to pay shipping to return it, but none of the posts agree the seller is at fault at all. The listing is in GBP, it's very difficult to miss. Even with the picture upside down, it isn't hard to see that it is for RHD. There are some UK sellers who list in USD -- there it would be much easier to overlook the seller's location --- this is not that situation. If you look for instrument pod listings from the US, they also don't say LHD. Not sure why you think a UK seller would have to list RHD.
Is there a way for you to using eBay's discounted shipping on return? I notice this one will ship from the UK to the US for about $50 USD (

.
If not, you may want to try to do shipping through PayPal -- it gives you discounted rates like eBay and allows you to print your own label (I've not tried it for international, but it's much cheaper for domestic shipping) ->

Ummmm its in a currency not native to the US soooo no its not easy to miss. You can make the case regarding the return shipping being high so I agree with you there but youre getting butthurt that people arent getting upset that youre upset about something you clearly missed.
Buyer warning, dont buy specific parts for a LHD car without checking the specific part numbers. The world for oregondave has just expanded beyond his lower 48 states. Fair warning that Japanese and Australian parts may be an issue as well.
Yea, you screwed up and now you're trying every trick in the book to make the seller pay for a mistake YOU made.
What do I mean by "you're trying every trick"?
First, by leaving this negative feedback BEFORE the matter is completely resolved.
Second, by coming here on a Rennlist in hopes to "cancel" them on a public forum.
Lastly, by making a false claim against them with eBay.
They did NOTHING wrong. Doesn't matter if the part was photographed upside down. Common sense by cross reference the part# and rotating the photo shows it's a RHD part. (see example below)
I'm sure you'll claim the "Item wasn't as describe" and eBay may cave in and make the seller pay for return shipping. eBay is historically well-known to take the side of the buyer even when cases are obviously NOT the seller's fault, but I've heard eBay has done some management/policy changes in hopes to make cases like this one fair.
That being said, I know how you feel - you 'feel' molested and they didn't have the courtesy to use Vaseline, right? Well, if that's the way YOU 'feel', then you're dreaming on the level of rainbows and unicorns. You should just call it a loss and move on with life or recover your money by relisted the item here on RL, FB marketplace, or eBay. That's the right course of action instead of trying to make them pay for something they didn't do wrong.
As someone that sells lots of parts on eBay, this post boils my blood. The sad thing is that the seller here will likely have to eat the return shipping, either because eBay will make them, or because they do not want the bad feedback/unresolved issue to impact their powerselling rating. Having a powerselling rating saves you 1% of the fees, which adds up.
The amount of shipping I either pay for, or just refund the part in its entirety because the buyer is an idiot is substantial, but it is not worth losing the %.
OP, as others have said, we feel for you that you made a mistake. Don't make it someone else's problem.
Yes if I order the wrong part on eBay, I take responsibility for my actions and keep the part. I have made this mistake numerous times, usually not paying attention to the listing.
