Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The little green 3/4 circle (speedo icon with arrow) shows up on my speedometer - I'm assuming this is a speed alert. I tried to eliminate it using the trip computer, but whether the "activated" box is checked or unchecked, the icon stays lit. Any suggestions? Tim and Wayne - no wisecracks.

POST 2Original post

It's telling you your cruise control is on. The button to turn it on and off is at the end of the lower of the two control stalks on the right hand side of the steering wheel.

POST 3Original post

Okay Phil, I won't wisecrack because us C4S owning Phils have to stick together. That's your cruise control icon...just press the end of the stalk and it will go away.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

OK, I admit it - I'm a dope. Thanks for the tip. Appreciate it Phil and Bruce. When Tim and Wayne see this -- oh boy.

POST 5Original post

I will also admit it, just because I am new to my car, I found the same light on after a tussle on the road with a GTO, drove home with it on saying 'WTF is that?'. Figured it would turn off when I shut it down, but no. After checking everything I pressed that small button on the end of the cruise control (which I had not used yet) thinking just maybe and what do you know, it went off.

POST 6Original post

Too right! You drive your car so little that you don't know what the cruise control light looks like! The chances of that car going fast - hmm... a cold day in hades comes to mind. Okay, Ill be nice. Sorry, Phil, I couldn't resist.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I didn't even know the damn car had cruise control til I looked at the spec sheet! Why would anyone use that feature anyway??

POST 8Original post

You're absolutely right - I know it's there on my car, but I've never even tried it - I have no clue if it even works.... you know, like the windshield wipers.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

You're sounding more like me every day!

POST 10Original post

You know there's a reason that at work they call me the Porsche Meteorologist - if the car is in the lot, then they're 100% guarenteed that there will be no rain on that day. Before I leave for work I check 3 different weather sites - if there's a consistent forecast for >30% chance of rain, then I take my other car.

POST 13Original post

Don't worry Phil, it took me at least 4k miles in my 996 to figure out these little things, so there's hope for you. Go and drive your car, there are lots of suprises waiting for you!

POST 14Original post

Not sure I follow. Doesn't Phil have to hit 4K miles on the car before he figures that out anyway?

POST 15Original post

Thought you were referencing my weather comments.

POST 16Original post

Nope, I was referring the fact that Phil didn't RTFM!

POST 17Original post

Yeah, but are you surprised that this happened? As a neighbor it's my duty to get his car out and driven and I'll admit that I'm doing a lousy job with him so far. ...maybe I need to borrow Phil's car and take it out to show it what it was born to do. I could even take his wife along for the ride so that she can pity the poor neglected beast sitting in her garage.

POST 18Original post

Not surprised at all. IIRC, the glove box containing the manual doesn't open until the break-in period is done

POST 19Original post

< SIGH! > < Tim reads this ^ and sadly shakes his head. Thinks he should probably read the other postings first, but has decided not to do so. He says to himself, "Self, if Phil would drive the @#%&*(^$# car he would know that 'the little green 3/4 circle' is the indicator for the cruise control. All he needs to do is press the end of the lower right-hand steering wheel stalk and the 'the little green 3/4 circle' will be turned off. I guess he doesn't ever use cruise control while he is practicing shifting from reverse to first in his driveway!" > < SIGH! > < "What should I do? I guess I could tell Phil to but that probably wouldn't be too nice, since Phil specifically asked for no wise cracks from Wayne and me. I am sure that was really directed at Wayne but Phil probably didn't want to single out Wayne so he included me, too. Yeah, that's what he meant!" "Ok, back to the problem! What to do... what to do....? Hmmmmm...... OK, I got it!" > Phil, I am not really certain about this but I think that may be the Cruise Control indicator. I think if you press the end of the lower stalk on the right-hand side of the steering column, that just might turn it off. Wait a minute, I'll go out to my car and check.......... <hee hee.... Phil probably really thinks I went out to my car and checked..... hee hee> OK, I'm back. Yeah, that should do it, just press the end of the lower stalk to turn of the Cruise Control light on the dash. Hope that helps! < Tim once again thinks to himself, "Man, that was hard to keep from making a wise-@ss comment, but I think I showed great restraint! Phil will never know how much I wanted jab him and jab him good! Oh well, one opportunity passed upon, but there is always tomorrow.....!" >

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Are you sure it's the cruise control, Tim? Right stalk, push in .....

POST 22Original post

Yeah, I'm pretty sure. However, let me go out to my car and check again. I'll be right back............ Ok, I'm back! Yup, lower right ...... well, you know the rest!

POST 23Original post

Phil, Phil, Phil... I can't beleive you're falling for this. These guys are being cruel, taking advantage of you this way.. that little green icon has *nothing* to do with cruise control. As you mentioned, why would anyone have cruise control on a Porsche? No, contrary to the line these guys have been feeding you, let me give you the straight scoop.. Porsche was aware that sometimes these cars become, um, "garage queens" is the word someone used - when that happens the fuel has a tendency to age in the tank to the point where it can harm the fuel delivery system. So Porsche very wisely put a "fuel age monitoring system" (FAMS) in these cars. The little green light is just the FAMS system kicking in, letting you know you need to go drive the car for a few hundred miles or so to burn up all that nasty old gas and get some new in the tank. I'd recommend running the car until it's absolutely empty, and you run out of gas by the side of the road. Then call Porsche roadside assistance and tell them you had a "green light on the FAMS so you went on aged fuel depletion run" and to come with a fresh tank of gas.. Tell 'em Rennlist sent you.. - Nick

POST 25Original post

Oh Nick, now you let the cat out of the bag! Damn, we had him going there for a while, but now all our efforts have been wasted! Thanks A LOT!

POST 26Original post

FAMS...Wow, that's worse than an RMS I've heard. Not sure this is easily fixed.

POST 27Original post

Well, be careful - some models have the advanced option of the FARTs - Fuel Age Rating and Type monitors, where the car triggers a warning if you put the wrong kind of gas in there... wrong octane, cheap gas instead of branded gas, etc. You know, I think that Phil might have a FART instead of a FAM, as the FAMS has a blue light and he said his was green.

POST 28Original post

Good thing the light wasn't red, as that would have made it a FARQ and you really don't one of those to go off on your car.

POST 29Original post

Indeed.. it's embarassing to have to call the dealer and tell them you've been FARQ'ed. - Nick

POST 30Original post

I think Phil's problem is old gas, and as Wayne pointed out, Phil said his light was green. So I guess that makes Phil an old FART!

POST 31 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'll be moving to the Buick Electra forum - I'm sure I can find some posters my age there.

POST 32Original post

Hey, I think there was a thread a few months ago for fitting air vents to the fenders of your Porsche (like a Buick), I'll have to find that for you. BTW, how fast were you going that you thought you had triggered a speed warning?

POST 34Original post

Well, I had to ask - considering that 60mph is the fastest observed Phil-speed record (PSR) that we've recorded to date. I was wondering if we had hit 65mph, or even 70mph this time.

POST 35Original post

You guys crack me up. I'm sitting here laughing out loud to myself. I wouldn't take it up over 60 unless you have a aero kit on it. I've hard the earlier 996's get loose in the front end at "high" speeds.

POST 36Original post

Oh man, I had forgotten about the "speed alert" comment Phil made in his first post! Man, just how fast can one go when they are driving up and down their driveway.... 16, 17 MPH? "Speed alert" <== this one is to match the "little green 3/4 circle"

POST 37 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I hear the Buick Lucerne is coming out with BSE (Buick Sport Exhaust) for '08. Can't wait to hear that sucker rumbling down my driveway at 5mph

POST 39Original post

.... or, if you wanted to save some money, you could just get the stock mufflers and we could do a BSE MK I mod. In fact, the more I think about it, that is the way to go, because if you pay extra for the BSE, you certainly won't get you money's worth, as little as you drive.

POST 40Original post

I have to chime in as I am getting to know some of you, but Phil, is the number at the bottom of your avatar which says Posts, is that the actual mileage on your car?

POST 41Original post

You do realise that BSE is also Mad Cow Disease?

POST 42 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

That would be correct - bovine spongiform encephalopathy to be precise. Which I may be afflicted with, although we don't see much of it in SE PA. BTW, Speed Demon - actually have 2225 miles and counting!!

POST 43Original post

I figured you would know Phil. I know it because I'm one of the lucky ones that might be incubating it... ahh the joys of having lived in the UK.

POST 44Original post

Ahhh so close to the right number too, but hey your starting to get up there with the mileage, soon it will need it's routine service

POST 45Original post

Phil - can I buy your S4 after you don't drive it?

POST 46Original post

Phil, you're killing me, I don't know how you do it Glad to see you've surpased the break in stage by now BTW, I have seen some fake magnetic buick fender "holes" on flea bay...

POST 47 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Damn, those would look GREAT on the S4!!

POST 48 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I swear, this is to be my work car - just signed the deal tonight. Special order A8 color - Northern Blue - should be fun car for work. And, good for at least 2-3K miles/year!!
