Suspected cause
Overall, the PCCM+ units have turned out to be a good product for Porsche and seem to be selling great since they recently announced a future 997/987 version.
Outcome qualification: Negation, uncertainty or missing explicit repair resolution overrides the raw extraction signal.

Suggestion
Despite the lack of wireless CarPlay and backup camera functionality, it provides a clean OEM look that - if anything - may ENHANCE aftermarket value given that its from Porsche Classic.
Leading evidence: 'good product' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'good product' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean oem look' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I've had my PCCM+ in for a couple of months and after an install related hiccup (my doing - CAN/AMP setting issue)...it's worked great.

What’s ome about a double din radio in a 996 if you were to use the single din I get it but a 7in screen is definitely not OEM

This unit keeps things OEM except now you can use Waze and Spotify and do voice commands.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Overall, the PCCM+ units have turned out to be a good product for Porsche and seem to be selling great since they recently announced a future 997/987 version. The only complaints so far have been with earlier non-MOST analog cars.
I still wish the single-DIN unit was a supported retrofit into the early 996. I suspect it's easier to get that into an analog system than a MOST-based system, and it's not impossible, based on at least one car that went through BaT.
I agree, especially with the lack of reverse camera. I can live with no wireless CarPlay/Android Auto but the skipping the reverse camera is an oversight. I wonder if an aftermarket solution will be born at some point. With this, I'll still probably get it in the future.
I sit quite low in my car so a back up camera, although not necessary, would have been nice. I'm pretty sure most budget cars come with one these days so not sure why a kit can't be developed or something existing made to work. You just need to be able to feed the video stream into the unit and activate when reversing. It also looks like a solution for wireless carplay already exists and has been confirmed to work with PCCM+

I've had back-up cams in newer cars, and I have to say it is something I've never taken to using. I just can't break the habit of looking out the windows as I back up.
The work truck has it and I think its a useful feature as does the minivan. Arguably I've made it through life without having back up cams until recently, my fading eyesight makes it useful. I'm still interested in a sound upgrade, though its behind, UAOS, IMSB, RMS, etc. The sound system isn't what I'd like.
First back up camera I've had is in my 4Runner. Got used to relying on it until I backed into a dumpster that had an upward 45 deg angle...wait no...must have been a box truck that clipped me in the parking lot...yeah that's the ticket.
I was all over getting the PCCM+ when I acquired my C4S this past March, but honestly I've come to enjoy the vintage, no-screen set up of the car. That's my current thought anyway. May just get a Bluetooth plug and a magnet and be done with it.
I think if Im going to spend $1500+ on a radio it should have all the bells and whistles from a product by Porsche they should be better then the the aftermarket at 2x the price but noooo you cant have it all from Porsche without paying for the hype
but I think a backup camera and CarPlay should have been standard from a safety standpoint playing with your phone in a sports car is DANGEROUS

I've had my PCCM+ in for a couple of months and after an install related hiccup (my doing - CAN/AMP setting issue)...it's worked great. It's not for everyone....some want that raw, visceral sound of engine....and so see no value in upgrading at all. I totally get and respect. For those who do want to add 21st century audio / apps / nav / phone to their 996....as noted above...a few features found in many aftermarket radios (wireless CarPlay and backup camera) is missing. Not to mention it's expensive in comparison to aftermarket radios. However, if someone values OEM look and wants nearly all the features of an aftermarket radio....there just isn't a better option. It works really well, looks and feels like it belongs in the car and it's a Porsche part so shouldn't be a negative in resell market as can be the case with aftermarket installations.
Correct that 7inch screen was not OEM. However, PCM was introduced during 996 model run and while the screen size is less than 7inches it is a double DIN install. Porsche's PCCM+ as a double DIN solution with non OEM 7 inch screen is the closest you can come to an 'upgraded' OEM experience.
Right just because it fits the hole doesn’t mean it works it’s just a substitute to a more modern Porsche look
i know it’s Porsche product but my concern is price versus value I think if you are going double din the aftermarket offers more for less the only draw back is no Porsche lettering
It's definitely more than just Porsche lettering....especially for the MOST cars. Those of us with MOST have been at a disadvantage in the aftermarket space. PCCM+ was developed to be plug-n-play w/MOST.
What makes the PCCM+ so desirable (and why it is selling well) is that it is a genuine Porsche Classic unit. Despite the lack of wireless CarPlay and backup camera functionality, it provides a clean OEM look that - if anything - may ENHANCE aftermarket value given that its from Porsche Classic. If you want max functionality then just get a kenwood unit and be done with it. This unit keeps things OEM except now you can use Waze and Spotify and do voice commands. I can see this not making sense for all 996 situations though. So far Ive been loving mineregarding backup camera since I try to drive with the top down I just turn around to see where Im backing up. Works every time!
This is a photo from another Rennlister....can't remember who. This was the picture that was the inspiration for the install I had done by CAI. It turned out great and really makes it look as though the car could have been optioned that way from day 1. By the way, for DIYers out there....Rod @ CAI said the length of the media box cable makes connecting to the radio a challenge. It can be done but it's a tight fit to get it routed and hands in right position to connect.
That aux box location is awesome it looks like you need a specially adapted batwing though. Would love to lay my hands on one of any suggestions out there
If you have a custom installer in your area you could see if they’d do the work. In my case, I purchased a new batwing and brought picture above to CAI and asked them to duplicate. They took the aux box, modified batwing, filled and painted. I think I was billed 2-3 hours of labor + materials. In my opinion it was well worth it.
For a non MOST install I don't think it would be that hard. You would need to figure out which wires to map to the head unit. I would think it's only Power, Ground, Amp turn on and speaker pairs.
I've been really stuck on the lack of features. I don't care if it's a small care and a camera isn't strictly necessary, they're common, easy to add, required on all new cars, and still give additional perspective that's helpful. As for wireless, that's really bringing it up to date, and frankly if you're going to go to the effort of making it look and feel like it belongs there, who wants a wire sticking out of it? That's the same reason I don't currently even have a phone mount.
Seeing this, both of those seem so far down the list of considerations - it looks fantastic. Of course, that price thing is still an issue but I have MOST, and tacking on the price of all the bits needed drives that price right up there too. This just keeps looking better.
