I was clever enough when I installed my head unit to connect some RCAs to the sub out and they are sitting back there waiting for something to plug in to lol.

I'm using a Rockville 10" under seat sub and a Planet Audio 8" in my basement (driven by a 12-volt power supply -- I needed very low profile to hide the subs) and they put out a shocking amount of bass for as small and shallow as they are.

Wanted to also add that I really wanted to use Focal speakers, even ordering a set from Crutchfield, but fitment wasn't even close for the front or the rears.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

My experience is that, either with hi-fi or without, the best bet is to use a small active sub if you can find a place to fit it that meets your own standards for looks/practicality.

Suggestion
Also, if you use a subwoofer driver that can go deeper, it can overwhelm the door enclosure and rattle when you crank it and it may not go as high (frequency-wise) as the original woofers to blend with the main speakers.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi all,
Looking for the best speakers to replace everything in the car. Not looking to spend Focal prices on speakers.
I've already replaced the head unit with a Double Din from CAI.
Those Focal speakers are a lot cheaper if you dont buy them via CAI. These guys have Alpine speaker kits and also sell frames that fit the Focal speakers:
https://www.jmgshop.com/porsche-boxs...akers-62-p.asp
Researched this job on and off for a couple of years. Here is what I ended up using:
Alpine S-S40. I used these in all four corners. Their tweeter is built in, so just had to remove the old ones. Had to exchange a couple of brands of speakers before I finally found some that would fit. Crutchfield's fitment guide wasn't too helpful here. (FYI, I have a cab, so space for the rears was really tight).
Metra 71-017C speaker wiring harnesses. Using these enabled me to do no wire cutting at all.
CAI-store.com 996 speaker kits (two sets needed). These kits are not required, but make the job a snap.
My system sounds pretty decent now, so I'm happy with the results. All in, it was less than $400.
Wanted to also add that I really wanted to use Focal speakers, even ordering a set from Crutchfield, but fitment wasn't even close for the front or the rears.
I have Focals in my car and if I had to do it over again, I would go with something cheaper. It's nothing against Focal (I use them on 2 different home systems) it's that with the acoustical limitations of the 996, it's hard to justify the $800.00 price tag.
FWIW, I have Focal 'K2 Power 100KRS' in the front and Focal '
Performance 100AC' in the rear.
Agreed. Also its not easy to install the crossover filter, especially under the left dash speaker. Theres very little room and I still need to move it elsewhere because I get some interference from the car electronics.
My 996 came without door speakers so even with the Focal speakers, sound is not great since Im missing the bass. Im also using the original CDR-220 head unit which may be part of the problem (but I like the looks).
My car, too, lacks the door speakers and I am in a quandary as to what to do. I dont want a huge enclosure at the back, and anyway a small powered subwoofer would probably blend in better with the rest of the speakers. But where to put it? My preference is to mount one under the dash in the passenger side, but I would need to fabricate a mounting system. And I cant fabricate anything. Another possibility is just behind the rear seats but the space is ever so slightly too narrow for any of the little subs Ive seen.
I put JL C2s in the dash using the adapters from CAL. Pre MOST Bose so I have not toyed with subs. It's a 2002 Targa so i have the same footwell sub as the Cab. It's 1 Ohm and the doors tied together are 1 Ohm. Base is fine given the car noise.
For those of us without door speakers, its difficult to get good bass. The sub enclosure for cabs in the front passenger footwell could do the trick, but Im wondering if you wouldnt still miss the mid-bass region.
I believe the subwoofer behind the rear seats only works with Bose MOST systems which I dont have.
There's nothing special about the "Bose" sub enclosure, it's just an enclosure with two drivers in it. You'd need an amp of your choice and a suitable crossover.
If you search for "under seat subwoofer" on Amazon (

), you will see many very low profile and fairly small subwoofers available. These have their own amp built-in and crossover controls, as well as a remote **** to control subwoofer level as needed, so it should be possible to blend them with the mains. They only need a line level signal to be driven, so they are very easy to connect. I don't think they actually fit under the seat in a 996 (I recall somebody trying in the past, but might be wrong), but they are small enough that you might be able to find a spot to hide one (or make it barely noticeable).
I'm using a Rockville 10" under seat sub and a Planet Audio 8" in my basement (driven by a 12-volt power supply -- I needed very low profile to hide the subs) and they put out a shocking amount of bass for as small and shallow as they are. Inexpensive also. Don't let the low price fool you, they will perform very well if you can find a place to hide it in the 996.
Yes these kinds of subs are all I need for this car and this system. I was clever enough when I installed my head unit to connect some RCAs to the sub out and they are sitting back there waiting for something to plug in to lol. Another possibility is to get a sub from Bose car and drive it with a small mono sub amp.
Im confused as to the specificity of the thread. Would not the best speakers for any 996 be the same across the model range? Is there truly a different set of conditions existing in the C4S?
Very smart of you to connect the RCA's! I don't have any experience with the Bose subwoofer, but given the small driver/drivers within it (I think there are 2 different models), I'd expect the under seat sub to perform much better, and the onboard amp has a lot of tuning controls to optimize. It seems like they are about as deep as the Bose (I'm completely guessing here -- didn't see exact measurements of Bose), so it may be possible to make it look good.
The dash/rear speakers can't put out any real bass because of their small size (even after upgrading), so if you don't have the hi-fi option, the question of filling out the bass is about the same as it is with any other car that has only small speakers (except, of course, figuring out which bass options fit inside the 996).
For cars that have the hi-fi option with door woofers, unless you are going to change out the amp, there really aren't a lot of great replacement woofer options because the original woofer is 2ohms (very hard to match) and a 4ohm replacement will tend to be quieter. Also, if you use a subwoofer driver that can go deeper, it can overwhelm the door enclosure and rattle when you crank it and it may not go as high (frequency-wise) as the original woofers to blend with the main speakers. The original woofer is very well built, so it is likely still in great condition on practically all 996's (unlike the dash/rear speakers with paper cones that are typically in poor shape (in addition to not being very good in the first place)). Those door woofers are "woofers only" -- they are not subs (they don't go very deep) and they are not regular coaxial speakers either. My experience is that, either with hi-fi or without, the best bet is to use a small active sub if you can find a place to fit it that meets your own standards for looks/practicality.
