we are actually checking the alignment of a crank bed on one of our generators at work the crank is 20 long though so we use a wire and measure between the wire and bearing beds with a bore guage and an ultrasonic device to hear when we touch the wire.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

9 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Im putting together my crankcase carrier on my 997 I put stock Porsche bearings in. When I torque the bearings to 20/30/40lbs with the ARP bolts it spins freely. But once I get to the specified torque 50ft lbs it binds up and cannot be turned? Kinda seems like a lot of torque and its deforming the case. Also does anyone know what the torque and angle is on the stock Porsche bolts. thanks

POST 2Original post

997.1 M97.01 https://www.theknowledgegruppe.com/p...97-automobile/ 11 ft-lb 120

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

ok thank you so initial torque is 11 ft-lb then go another 120 degrees with the stock bolts?

POST 4Original post

Quotes source post: 17635834

The ARP bolts should have come with torque values. Do not use the Porsche spec on the ARP bolts as they are different.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17636813

yes thank you they say 50 ft lbs which is quite a bit higher then the stock bolts.

POST 6Original post

Was your crankshaft verified by a machine shop to be straight?? What failure did your engine have..i.e., why are you rebuilding ??

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes crankshaft was verified and polished im rebuilding because of bore scoring. The crank only binds on the last torquing sequence up to 50lbs Im guessing I may need to torque it and have it line bored but I just want to be sure before I take that step

POST 8Original post

Has the machine shop installed the main bearings and torqued to 50ft/lbs spec and measured the bearing ID to make sure they are all in spec compared to crank journal OD? What was the clearance?

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17636972

The clearance for all but two of the journals was .001 and the other two the clearance was slightly less probably .0005-.00075 i might have to find someone to hone/bore the mains or get crank polished more? I have all the tools at work to doublecheck the dimensions which I might do. we are actually checking the alignment of a crank bed on one of our generators at work the crank is 20 long though so we use a wire and measure between the wire and bearing beds with a bore guage and an ultrasonic device to hear when we touch the wire. Pretty cool
