A cost of $500 to save you thousands, potentially tens of thousands, if done by a shop that knows what to look for (this is also a guideline and not a set in stone, there are other things that can't be inspected much from a visual standpoint).

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

HI all,
I'm new here to please forgive me in advance, but I'm looking to buy my first Porsche and I've got my heart set on a 996 4S. I found a seller in Oregon who seems reputable and is selling his 996 4S with 98K miles. He forwarded me the Carfax and a couple of service record which led to me first area of concern. The vehicle was first owned as a Corporate vehicle and has partial service records to boot. It also appears early on it was sold to Hertz who then did a lot of the service before then once again selling to a dealer. Maybe the car was leased from Hertz? This was some time ago so not sure if that was a thing Hertz even did back then but it has me afraid the car wasn't taken proper care of.
Anyway, the leads me to my next point of contention. If I go ahead and get a PPI on this car I was quoted up to $500. That's a lot of money for a car I don't even know is worthwhile. What do you guys think? Vehicle is priced at $32K FYI. Happy to share additional information.
I mean, that's pretty much the point of a PPI. A cost of $500 to save you thousands, potentially tens of thousands, if done by a shop that knows what to look for (this is also a guideline and not a set in stone, there are other things that can't be inspected much from a visual standpoint). Assuming it has a 3.6L, you'd want the bores scoped for sure. It'll have a single row bearing, which, after you do some research you can figure out if you'd want to replace with an updated LN or comparable part (this can range from around $2k-$4.5k depending on location, and what route you decide to go). The car is priced pretty reasonably for a 4S IMO. The Hertz portion is a little confusing, didn't know they'd ever had 996's in their fleet. Not that it's a negative, but it could be since you don't know how it was driven during that point (IE: bounced off the rev limiter, which would be shown on the over-rev report from the PPI).
I wouldn't count it out, but I'd also look further with some skepticism. Sounds like it could be a good deal.
don't worry about that hertz stuff. Its actually a dealer with a lot of locations, just an artifact of CarFax I'm sure

you should also at least pull your own carfax if he provided his own.
Is this the car?

sounds like it has the right maintenance if he can provide documentation.
LN VIN lookup does not list the car
The PPI is there to protect you and save you $$$ in the long run. $500 is not objectionable. Case in point, my PPI was done in 2 stages. Stage 1 was $250 in Canada. It covered the basic stuff, all working, accidents, etc. Found broken power seat switch and leaking RMS. Stage 2 was borescope, filter cut open etc. That was $500. Presented findings to selling dealer (borescope was clean) and repair estimate. They replaced power seat switch. RMS replacement was estimated at $1400. Dealer discounted car by $1400 due to PPI. Car had 45000 miles. Went in for Solution, AOS, H20 pump/stat, clutch, flywheel, RMS.
The PPI made me $600 and peace of mind.
Thanks for the advice everyone and really appreciated the experienced perspective -- going to go ahead with the PPI and hope it doesn't get swooped up in the mean time. Wish me luck.
