Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Of course I had some other things done, a new short shifter, a new battery, diagnosed a parasitic draw, changed my diff fluid, and replaced a few hoses/odds and ends (also don't forget over $1k in sales tax, ouch).

In addition the 1 year warranty from Porsche and 3 year warranty from 3zero3 sort of put me over the edge against a different used car.

To be perfectly honest I hoped for the whole process to be cheaper and by the time we tore down the old engine and figured out what was wrong I was pretty much set on having mine fixed.

Unsuccessful attempt
I went a different route - was lucky enough to get a complete 997 crate engine, slightly used but still not cheap!
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My '01 996 is finally on the up on the rack and getting started. I'll keep posting photos as I get them.
It was an IMS failure and right now it's being broken down to see the extent of the damage.
Got a call today, the crankshaft is the source of the metal in my oil pan and will need to be replaced. I'm expecting a call later this week with some hard numbers/estimates on the total cost and needed parts for the repair.
Side note 3zero3 is doing a PCA event Thursday and sounds like a good time to go check out on progress and see the damage for myself. Anyone else going to be there? Don't make fun of me too much, the 944 is my daily driver again until the 996 is sorted.
Quick update --- Talked to 3zero3 and have a meeting set up next week to discuss what we're going to do.
The good - It's going to cost the same to bump up to a 3.6 or a 3.8 ... guess I'm going with a 3.8
The bad - That probably means more money and I won't have my baby back before the weather gets nice (wtf is up with Colorado weather this year)
The ugly - I'm pretty sure I'm going to go over budget :/ and my wife may just very well kill me.
Well, I've been out of loop for a while ... we went with a rebuilt motor from Porsche instead of 3zero3 doing the rebuild. But I'm back on the road and have a 1 year Porsche warranty. Cost all in all was around 23k, but they took care of some hoses, parasitic drain, and did my differentials while it was in. I'm 100% now and couldn't be happier.
Ouch! That hurts. I feel your pain. I went a different route - was lucky enough to get a complete 997 crate engine, slightly used but still not cheap! Have a 2 year warranty with it. I feel the same as you though - couldn't be happier with it.
So you have a car with a brand new engine for $23k. I can see that but assuming there's no sentimental attachment at what point do you start looking for a low milage 997 in the $35k range? Was that in your sites or was this a no-brainer?
They main thing is you couldn't be happier so that's great.
The cost was for everything not just the engine. The engine tear down and diagnositc was $2k and the new engine replacement (remember the old one was already out) was $16.5k after core charge.

To know that I'm covered makes driving a ticking time bomb feel much better. That and I'd have to migrate over to the 997 forum ... I'd miss reading IMS threads
Your **** might be bleeding from sand mixed in with the vaseline but at least you got a smile on your face now. That's all that counts. I hope you have many more happy miles with your car now.
haha yeah, maybe with all the issues "resolved" by Porsche with this new motor it'll be good for 200,000+ miles that it should be. On the down side, my wife has seen this whole experience as an excuse to start pushing me to get rid of my 944 ...
