biggest thing to check with a re-man is that they use the OEM regulator...a cheapo regulator will work for a while but then end up back at the shop....

Its not THAT bad...just a costly repair, very costly - lessons learned though right

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

The oil filler downspot was leaking after my oil change the previous year, in order to replace the oil filler downspout the alternator was loosened and moved for access.

YES if you spend 1/2 a day this next weekend and skin your knuckles up, run the risk of scratching your rear bumper with your belt you forgot to remove, spend 15 minutes washing the kids up after you moved them for being in the way because you were frustrated with a bolt, forget to unplug the battery, and nearly short out your electrical system, find ouot your radio doesnt work anymore after un-plugging the battery, .....

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

$526 for the alternator, $45 for a belt, and $360 for 3 hrs labor. Need to get a new Interstate battery in there as well due to it being drained because of bad alternator. He has to order the alternator......does that seem high? ('01 Carrera Cab)
3 hrs. is alot of time for this job, but it may be the "shop time" fro the book. You have to take out the airbox (10mins), remove the belt (5 mins.) and then take off the alternator and reintall everything. A good tech can prbably do this job in 1-2 hrs. But the way they make money is to charge the book time and then do it alot faster. It is an easy DIY.

Also call Sunset Porsche for OEM at cost +15%. You can save about 50% on the alternator and get a belt for about $30.
Good luck
And people wonder why Porsche gets away with charging so much? It would be cheaper to have someone follow you all the time in another car and just carry a set of jumper cables. You are being ripped off.
ripped off for sure. Just spoke w/ the dealer again. Now says he "read the wrong line" on the service book and it is 1.9 hours (not 3). Sunset alt was $350+ $20 shipping . My guy says that is his cost for the part ($350). Bottom line, the alt is marked up $175. I don't mind paying a premium for service but come on, lets keep it fair!
Understood.
Changing parts often isn't that hard. Alternator removal doesn't require too many tools and no special skills, just a little time and some patience. Plus, there's the satisfaction that comes with doing it yourself and not having to be dependent on others (in addition to the money saved).
Maybe something to think about for the next repair.
When you start to do this stuff yourself you will find that you can BUY the tools for yourself, and wind up CHEAPER than having the service center do it. When you're done,--you also have the tools! (24mm combo for the serpentine belt BTW).
then the price you paid is fair....
It allowed you to do what you do best (and want to do) These shops are a business and it takes money to run, they have employees and lots of other things to worry about. They just have a set rate that it costs to continue to operate and make a little profit. (if they are lucky) You get the car fixed with some sort of piece of mind that if there is a problem you can return it to them to take care of.....
meanwhile you can spend your time with your clients, wife and kids....
seems fair to me -
YES if you spend 1/2 a day this next weekend and skin your knuckles up, run the risk of scratching your rear bumper with your belt you forgot to remove, spend 15 minutes washing the kids up after you moved them for being in the way because you were frustrated with a bolt, forget to unplug the battery, and nearly short out your electrical system, find ouot your radio doesnt work anymore after un-plugging the battery, ..... you can save money.....
(dont get me wrong, many people learn to tackle these jobs with little or no experience)
but that isnt your cup of tea, sooooo it costs a few bucks, go make more and then roll on the floor with the kids and tickle them....
Nicely done Ed.
The dealer charges what they charge because they are Porsche dealers. Those big silver buildings cost a lot to own and maintain so they will charge a premium. Not that they aren't frustrating.
If you want to save money, spend some time to find a good indie. Chances are there will be no free coffee and doughnuts though.
The previous owner of my 1999 C4 had the alternator replaced in 2007 by an independent shop. I have the receipt and the total charge was $912. Parts and labor are not broken out.
The repair guys there have German accents which enables them to charge alot.
+1 ed, that is what a free market is all about. you buy what is more efficient for you to buy / trade for than to produce or do yourself.
i'm lucky, my indie has free coffee.
Just got the call from the service guy. The alt has been replaced and w/ labor it came to $730. Considering he originally quoted me $1000 I guess I feel better. You guys helped a lot w/ quoting me hours of labor needed and ideas on how to get discounts on the alt.
Now I'm taking my '97 993 Turbo in for an oil change (my first since I just got it). Can't wait to see how much that costs
biggest thing to check with a re-man is that they use the OEM regulator...a cheapo regulator will work for a while but then end up back at the shop....
and yes, there are local guys all over that can re-build...I had mine done for under $100 in the 3.2
I hate to admit it but I paid about $1,100 for a new alternator installed. Independent did the work. Absolutely screwed me and i knew it, people that know me couldnt believe I'd have been so taken advantage of...part of a much larger story ive already told.
you may not have been screwed...perhaps there is more to the story, what was it brought in for, what symptoms, what were the individual charges ? all things add up...
if it was a strange issue it might have taken a while to diagnose and that = $$
plus NEW vs rebuilt
plus any extras (belt, wire repairs, additional things on the bill)
just because it was $1100 doesnt mean you got screwed....that's just the total.
I was just saying that my wheel bearing would be over $1500 had I taken it in...not because I was getting screwed but because the diagnostics were hard and then there was additional collateral damage, in the end I got a wheel bearing for $1500!!!
but it is a fair deal when the entire thing is broke down
So true ivangene, this however was diagnosed in front of me about 10 min. The oil filler downspot was leaking after my oil change the previous year, in order to replace the oil filler downspout the alternator was loosened and moved for access. After 10 min road test car was surging a bit after throttle blip, then all lights came on in shop driveway. Of course the failure of the alternator in relation to it being loosened and removed was concerning... Stuff happens, wouldn't feel baddly had been charged a couple hundred less than the dealership for a new alternator, however not only did I pay the dealership rate (w/o the coffee and cookies) I paid "new part" cost for a reman... I was taken advantage of.
OK ouch.....
I wrote a big sappy reply last night but didnt post it, wanted to say something about being the better person and not letting one event be the focal point of bad feeling..getting over it and karma will come back on that person...just read it and thought it sounded a little too Dr Phil so I wont say it...but thats the gist of what I was thinking
I think we have all had some event in our lives we felt violated and hopefully that's the worst anyone has to deal with. Its not THAT bad...just a costly repair, very costly - lessons learned though right
I have a VW Eurovan... the alternator just went on that. Part at the dealer was over $800!! Reman part from Rock auto was $250. About an hour of my time, and it was done.
