Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have been looking for a car to replace my 02 C2 cab that I had to sell. That alone is an interesting story. Any way yesterday my wife and I went to look at a a silver 03 C4S that was advertised on rennlist. Test drove it and it was a nice car, negotiated with seller. We reached an agreement, looked each other in the eye and shook hands on the deal. I made an appt. with a local Indy for a PPI. Next move was to arrange payment. This morning I get a text from seller, " I sold it to an ebayer good luck" This person did not even have the ***** to call me. I have called him but of course he won't answer. Pretty disappointing. He was young and obviously had no idea what integrity or a handshake means. Part of what I am saying is that just because you are dealing with a Rennlister that doesn't mean they have any idea what integrity is. Any way I am back in the hunt for a 02-04 C4S coupe or Targa or an 06 coupe that is a Tip. But not black or white. RBC

POST 2Original post

That blows. I have lowered my expectations so low for people that roaches can jump over the bar without the help of a pole. If it were me, I'd post his name here in a New York minute. All the best with your search.

POST 4Original post

Wow what an ***. That really sucks. Hope you have better luck with the next seller, and good luck with the search.

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 12499479

What a jerk. But.....when the ebayer doesn't come through with payment I wonder if the seller will get in touch with you??? Then you can tell him to go pound sand .....But until then your search continues and a better car will come along. Fingers crossed and all the best in your search.

POST 7Original post

That sucks - sorry to hear about that. Good luck with your continued search. When he's asked to ship his car to Randomstan for someone's brother and he realizes it's a scam, tell him to go forth and multiply. DT - coltswitch if I remember correctly.

POST 8Original post

https://rennlist.com/forums/vehicle-...miles-tip.html What an a$$. Disappointed I gave him my feedback on selling his car.

POST 10Original post

rbc - you met him. How old was he? Apparently too young to understand what handshakes mean. They're just uncouth, and the money is gone to make them relevant in the neighborhood again. The rest of us can, and already do, much better than these shady tour guides. They will remain coolies.

POST 11Original post

I bought a 911sc 3 times over last year over the course of 2 months, each time the price went up a few bucks, really frustrating but third time was the charm. Found out his meds we're really messed up, he was 70. Things happen, there's another out there. While this was going on I bought a gt3 for track and I drive the 911sc 3-4 days a week as my dd over the summer. Think positive a better one is right around the corner!

POST 12Original post

Why didn't you put a deposit down with the handshake? I always do and so does anyone that ever buys anything from me. You are old enough to know, money talks..... A handshake is nice but if you back out, what does the seller supposed to do?

POST 13Original post

I would have honored the deal. That being said, your offer was technically a contingent offer due to the PPI. If the ebay buyer is buying without a contingency (PPI), then I can understand (somewhat) the desire to go with the ebay buyer. I almost always shake hands with someone when departing. Imo is right - you should have put down a deposit. That being said, he at least owed you the chance to remove your contingency and commit to the purchase immediately. Also - absolutely no excuse for not calling. Karma is a bitch - it will come back to haunt him. Plus, in retrospect, can you trust anything he said? Who knows, maybe he didn't really hand wash the car every time (like he claims on ebay) - and then what would you have on your hands? A non-hand-washed POS - that's what!

POST 14Original post

Sorry to hear about the run around the seller put you through. As KC said , karma will teach him a lesson sooner or later. Alan

POST 15Original post

Sorry to hear that. I've been through that before with other purchases. In a few cases, the guy came back to me after the other deal fell through. I never re-offered.

POST 16Original post

I'm not defending the guy, but if you were setting up a PPI and the car was a lemon after the inspection, because of the handshake you will still buy it?

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 12499657

"Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's garage" Damn, just broke that commandment. Post a pic of your maidservant so we can break that one too.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 12499599

Yeah, and he's not exactly a "member" in my book. Looks like he only joined RL to try to sell the car, not to be an active contributing member of the RL community. The other comments are valid, too. It was an offer contingent on results of the PPI, no deposit was left, etc. Still, reeks, but 996s aren't exactly rare, so you will find another soon.

POST 19Original post

Did he let you know it was also posted on ebay or only when he texted you that it was sold? I can understand a seller choosing multiple methods to sell a car, but I also completely agree that he should have let you know about the pending sale as well and an opportunity to decide how you wanted to proceed.

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 12499707

absolutely positively. there are two sides to every story. i have to side with the seller here. in the absence of a deposit, the car is still first come first serve, you lost!

POST 21Original post

Just giving the seller the benefit of the doubt here. But perhaps someone hit the buy it now button on eBay making it a binding contractual sale which the seller had to honor? Handshakes are great and I respect them, but buy it now with a PayPal payment or a wire transfer trump them in today's electronic market place and it takes a second. Meanwhile you deal was still pending a PPI which basically means your handshake is an intension to buy but not a commitment! Sorry you missed out! I am sure another great deal is around the corner.

POST 22Original post

Sorry to hear about the experience. We just got taken on a used car purchase by a private seller. Handshakes galore, retired, marine veteran, great car, you won't have any problems with it he tells my son. We needed the car for my son to safely transport his 3 month old daughter. And I was very clear about the need for the car. There is a lot to the story and many red flags which I warned my son about, but kids are kids. We teach them to trust then life happens. All we can do is stick to the Golden Rule for ourselves. Do unto others as you would have done to yourself. Even though the temptation is great to Do unto others as they have done to you. The right car will find you.

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 12500535

eBay sales are a binding contract, EXCEPT for automobiles or real estate. So there wouldn't have been any obligation to sell to an eBay bidder.

POST 24Original post

I'd be weary about a rennlister with only 10 posts.

POST 25Original post

Quotes source post: 12500730

I did NOT know that thanks. Have sold/bought on eBay since 1998 but have never dealt with the car market. Now I have something new to look into today.

POST 26Original post

I have to agree - no deposit, the car was still technically for sale. Of course, unless OP intended to buy the car even if it failed PPI. If I had $1 for every person that has come and looked at a car from me, haggled, shook my hand, then disappeared without buying the car, I could've probably kept the cars instead of selling them.

POST 27Original post

Quotes source post: 12499707

Well, for a car I'd expect anyone serious to put money down and/or sign a contract dependent on the (in this case) ppi. Sans any of that and it really wasn't much of a deal. I don't think karma will get anyone. The early bird got the worm, the seller seems like they will get paid, life is all good in their world.

POST 28Original post

Quotes source post: 12500774

Had a lady this weekend no-show for a photo session. Emailed me on Thursday or Friday about headshots, agreed on a price, agreed on a time, and didn't hear anything after that. These things happen.

POST 29Original post

Another angle might be that there are issues with this car that the seller knows about and he knew it would not survive a proper PPI. He chose to sell to someone who bought it sight unseen without contingencies for that reason. Just a thought.

POST 30Original post

I had this happen to me in the past and it sucks. It wasn't even age related. Ever since then, I play it safe with a written up contract and money deposit. No guessing that way and keeps both parties honest. People will use all sorts of things to try to sell their car and appear genuine. Biggest squabble I got into in the past was when they tried to play the Christian Church going card.

POST 31Original post

Quotes source post: 12501209

A good test drive would shake out almost all the issues a PPI would find. Just a thought. Also if it were me and I really wanted the car and a PPI then I'd arrange the PPI to be on the same day I was test driving it, no waiting, and less of a chance for it to be sold in the mean time.

POST 32Original post

For every seller that reneges on a deal, I bet there are 10 buyers that do it. When I had my 996 for sale, I had a friend of a friend make me an offer. We shook hands and pending a PPI he would purchase the car. He gave me a personal check for $500 to hold the car. He chose my Indy for the PPI so I dropped the car off the next day and the car passed with flying colors. I had 2 other very interested parties looking at the car at the time, but I considered the car sold. Of course he had to "get the money" so we were going to meet at the DMV the next morning. 8am I get a call and he had buyer's remorse. I told him i was going to cash his check and he warned me that he already put a stop payment on it. Next time, that check is going into the bank ASAP.

POST 33Original post

Quotes source post: 12501301

For me with my part time photo stuff (nothing high dollar or weddings) and casual sales like this dealing with deposits seems to open up more cans of worms than would be worth it. That check, without a contract is a great way to land in small claims court. That check, with a contract, is a great way to lose a friend and tick someone off, for all of waiting a few more days to sell the car. In a case like that, and with polite correspondence to the other interested parties, you would still have the car sold and not have to worry about $500 from someone who wouldn't have been a good buyer or caretaker for the car anyway. Plus, even better for the other sellers, you have had the car go though an inspection.

Are you still friends?

POST 35Original post

Another feminine hygiene product out there. Sheesh. Similar thing almost happened to me about 12 years ago. I went over and looked at a Cord Beverly for sale locally in my DD. We made a deal, I left the guy $200 that I had on me he wrote a deposit note and went home and got the car hauler and over to the bank for the cash. I got back to his place, backed the hauler up in front of the car, and he comes running out with my money 'oh! I sold the car already, sorry here is your deposit in full'. Stupidly, he left the key in the car, so I just hopped in and put it on my trailer. I wrote him a bill of sale for $200 all the while he's talking about police this and theft that, blah-blah. I said you can take the rest of the money, and I will take the car or you can call the cops and let them see if they will get in the middle of a cash sale, since I have the car, and the keys it's not going to go your way. I drove off, and never heard from him again.

POST 36Original post

Quotes source post: 12501476

Astonishingly ballsy. So did you pay him the rest of the money? Had to Google the Cord Beverly, what a beauty!

POST 37Original post

Quotes source post: 12501499

Yes, I paid him. He was whining about a guy in Sacramento who was going to give him more, and saying I should kick in another $2500 blah-blah, losing money, I'm ripping him off. I just handed over the cash and drove off. I was lucky I could get it in gear, the Cord is notorious for being hard to shift with the pre-selector trans. Bottom line out there, if you shake someone's hand, that is that, you are committed.

POST 38Original post

Quotes source post: 12501547

Only if you shake my hand with some money. (as it applies to cars) No money and it could easily be the early bird gets the worm, unless I like the person.

POST 39Original post

Quotes source post: 12501454

Yeah, with the friend of the "buyer". It wasn't his fault and he clearly was helping me out by sending a "buyer" my way. I honestly can't say I would even recognize the guy that backed out if I saw him on the street. As for the PPI, that made me feel good about my car and its maintenance, but I still questioned why the guy would get a PPI from my Indy. However, my Indy was clear with me that he would give an honest review of the car. I told him I would expect nothing less. The eventual buyer was on Rennlist for a little while, but haven't seen any posts from him in over a year. Maybe he sold the car already. His only comment was the cruise control didn't work (I never used it) and he shredded a rear tire the second he got back to his garage (he drove it home from AZ-IN). I really do miss my 996. I guess you never forget your first...

POST 41Original post

I see the listing has finished at Reserve not met. There is an advantage of buying a car on EBay but just as far as EBay's Vehicle Purchase Protection is concerned. So since you're in Seneca, I'd like to invite you to join our Carolinas Region Porsche Club monthly meeting the first Monday of each month at Quaker Steak & Lube on Chrome Dr. from 6:30 until 9. You don't have to be a member to come. We have about 70 members there each month. Please try to come by any meetings when you can.

POST 44Original post

Quotes source post: 12499707

+1 I've sold quite a bit of stuff and it's 50/50 if you see the person that you had the handshake with the next day. I had several times people would ask me to pull my advertisement and tell me to tell anyone else that called the car was sold, yet the next day or course I did not hear from the person. So it goes both ways. Going forward I always put up a deposit, get a copy of the title etc and make sure the deal is locked in so the next day after going to the bank, getting insurance etc, the deal can continue to move forward.
