You get more sound - yes but in my opinion (and the quoted literature) you start changing variables that are designed to work together to get maximum performance.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just curious, I noticed on my 02 996 4S the airbox has a (fake) carbon fiber plug. I've seen on other cars a plastic pipe that runs off this. The tube to the MAF (I think that's it) is red too, not black. What's the deal? The red looks sort of silly in a sea of black.

POST 2Original post

it's an 'orange cap mod' my car had it too...i had no idea until somebody told me what to look up

POST 3Original post

Red elbow to the throttle body? The set up is just for sound when you stomp on it.

POST 4Original post

Fake carbon fiber plug sounds like a Fabspeed plug. Very expensive for what it is. Red hose might be from various manufactures. From cheap eBay to quality ones made by the same companies that make inlets for Turbos.

POST 5Original post

My car came with this mod, too. It gives you more intake noise above 3k RPM. I love the way my car sounds - it's almost like all 6 cylinders come together to make a musical chord.

POST 7Original post

My air box is out in this photo because I was changing the filter and MAF sensor. But you can see that instead of the black Y-shaped pipe, I have the orange silicone tube and a cap over the secondary air outlet. Mine says its from Schnell, but there are lots of manufacturers making these in different colors.

POST 8Original post

I found an ever so slight reduction in power from this mod... So I went back to stock. There is documentation that the Helmholtz muffler box smooths out the air flow so the MAF can get a better reading. YRMV

Interesting. I hadnt heard that. Ive never had the original pipe, so I have nothing to compare it to. Maybe Ill try to find a used one cheap and swap it out for a while.

Think I'm the only one that's experienced this! My car felt more smooth but also like it was lacking some power.

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 16603579

Anything is possible, but the hose to the Helmholtz muffler is after the MAF. I don't know how much it would affect the readings.

We had this discussion already remember?? Haha https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...resonator.html You get more sound - yes but in my opinion (and the quoted literature) you start changing variables that are designed to work together to get maximum performance.

POST 13Original post

I had a vague recollection of that but couldn't find it. This is probably not the last time either. I'm old.

POST 14Original post

I must admit, I miss the roar of my K&N Cool Air Intake! Maybe I'll bite the bullet and do something with my exhaust.

POST 15Original post

I removed my K&N air filter and put the stock box back on. I miss the K&N sound so much! I had no idea there'd be such a difference.
