Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I ran those Brembo pads on my 996 last year for about 4K miles.
Leading evidence: 'Run those brembo pads' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Also if the case, do I use brake grease between pad and shim?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Doing front brakes on my 02 4s. First I noticed the disc is about a 1/2 smaller in diameter and also thinner than the ones I took off the car.
regarding the pads, is the part on the back of the old one (in picture) a shin that should pop off and I can put on new pads? Also if the case, do I use brake grease between pad and shim? In the other picture the original had these two circular parts protruding in the corners ( see picture, only one visible). Do the new pads need these? The ones I received are not like that. Thanks.
Argeo- I just did the same job on my ‘04 C4S. I encourage you to get new shims. Others in the forum write about peeling the old ones off and reinstalling them on the new pads, but that didn’t work for me- the pads didn’t stay in place at all. I bought new shims, removed the adhesive backing, and installed them in the calipers. They will adhere to the new pads the first time you step on the pedal after you complete the job.
You can get the shims from your dealer, or any of the usual online suppliers.
I peeled mine off and reused them(Twice) with no trouble.
I ran those Brembo pads on my 996 last year for about 4K miles.
I hated them and replaced them with Akebono pads.
Akebono pads are my favorite pads now.
Very strange, can you elaborate on how the pads didnt stay in place? Were they the right size? I reused the shims dozens of times (changing them out and back in again before/after track days) and never had any issue with the pads seating and wearing properly. Its hard to imagine the adhesive on the shims could counteract the forces involved in braking. Also never greased anythingnever any noise or binding (and the grease would just burn up anyway.) granted mine was a fair weather car where the brakes had attention at least once or twice a year.
Many track guys don’t run shims at all. I tried it but got squealing on the street so stuck the shims back in. That is all the shims are for, to reduce brake noise. The pads are held in place with the pin.
Well that explains it. Thanks for the size mm.
So no lube between shim and pad. How about between shim and pistons?
Also, what are those things do that protrude from the front of the pad?
Never seen those before.
Are the pads I have ceramic? The only pads I can find that look similar with those two circles are ceramic. Thank you. Saw this 993 this morning. Pretty nice.
You can use lube between the shim and the pad, although I honestly havent found any difference one way or the other. With the shims (even dry), mine are completely quiet. Others have had different experiences, with some having zero noise without shims (although I had noise). No harm in a little proper brake lube though.
Those protrusions, I believe are a sort of counterweight, again to assist with quieting. Dont think they are a deal breaker either, as some pads (particularly race pads) dont have them.
That's the goal, that's why I am asking. If I don't need to buy authentic Porsche parts, all the better. They quoted me 1,006 for the parts. A bit steep in my opinion.
Brake rotors. Your C4s takes one 996-351-409-04 on the left front and one 996-351-410-04 on the right front.

Brake pads. Your C4s takes one set of 996-351-949-12 front pads. Look halfway down the page and match up the numbers. Don't be tricked by the rear and C2 pads also shown on the page.

If you want new shims the part number is 996-351-089-01 and you'll need 4 of them.
