Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

For the past 30000 miles of ownership, I have changed my Motul 5-40W synthetic every 5000 miles.
Leading evidence: 'Replace motul 5-40w synthetic every 5000 miles' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check filter (when cut open)' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. Suggestion
The oil and filter change is an easy DIY anyway and it gives me chance to check the filter (when cut open) for any metal dust or flakes.

And here is what I do, twice a year no matter what the mileage....one oil change/new filter in the spring before the weather gets hot and one in the fall before the weather gets cold.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My wife's 996 Carrera 2 (purchased in May 2000) has 8300 miles on it. The manual says to change the oil only (not filter) at 15,000. Is this recommended or would you recommend changing the oil halfway (+ filter?)? Even considering the amount of synthetic oil, I'm still surprised the oil and filter can last so long.
15K mile intervals are OK for these newer cars using Mobil 1 synthetic oil. However, you may buy yourself cheap insurance by changing oil and filter at every 7.5K or one year.
It is easy to change the oil on the 996. 8mm hex wrench for drain plug (careful not to overtighten...32 ft/lbs), Walmart oil filter wrench for filter element, 9.5 quarts of Mobil 1. I changed my oil at 3000, 7000, and 13,000. I now have 17,000 miles on it. Next oil change coming up at 20,000. Is there a science to it? Nope. Just makes me feel better that I'm doing a perceived good for the motor.
Resurrecting a thread from back in the beginning of time
. Interesting what the original owners of our cars were thinking. Hmm, this might explain some of the premature engine failures some have experienced. I wonder if the 991 guys are following a 15,000 mile oil change interval now?
Well, they were thinking this because at least my memory is this is what the owners manual called out for oil/filter change intervals.
When I bought (close to your stomping ground: Aristocrat Motors in Merriam KS) my 2002 Boxster in Jan of 2002 the owners manual called for 15K mile oil changes and 30K mile filter changes.
Since the oil was synthetic and there as so much of it compared the amount of oil my previous cars required -- 6 quarts or less -- I fully intended to follow the owners manual and I was about 4K miles into the 15K miles when on a whim I had the oil analyzed at a local truck stop oil change place that had an on-site oil analysis machine. When the report came back the oil had 7% water in it I tossed the 15K mile oil change out the door and changed the oil as soon as I could get the supplies from the dealer's parts department and every 5K miles there after. This engine is less than 100 miles away from reaching 289K miles.
For the past 30000 miles of ownership, I have changed my Motul 5-40W synthetic every 5000 miles. The oil and filter change is an easy DIY anyway and it gives me chance to check the filter (when cut open) for any metal dust or flakes. I would not relish the idea of running the engine 15000 miles before doing this check.
I can't believe this is even being discussed! My goodness, oil and filter is such cheap insurance and a simple DIY. The experienced engine builders on here say not more than 5,000 miles new oil new filter and that is the darn best advice you can get. My experience is I would never run for 15,000 miles on any engine without an oil change, much less a $7 filter. And here is what I do, twice a year no matter what the mileage....one oil change/new filter in the spring before the weather gets hot and one in the fall before the weather gets cold. 99 C2 133,000 miles with no issues or drama. My other cars have gotten the same treatment. And another point, if your car is a low annual mileage car it is even more important to change the engine oil often. My two cents FWIW...
Not to extend this discussion, because obviously it has been beat to death, but I think everyone is missing the real issue here. The original post says he bought the car in 2000. HAS 8,300 MILES SINCE! I assume this means he has never changed the oil if he is asking should I wait until 15,000 miles. If this is the case he still has the original 15 year old oil in the engine. Now, maybe he meant 83,000 miles but I think we are looking at a very low mileage car here. Hope I'm wrong
The OP date was 2001. He had 8300 miles on it since new in 2000.
Just do your oil early and often. Man I haven't posted on an oil thread in quite sometime. I'm very disappointed in myself.
There, I went back and edited my post.
My point wasn't to ask about the oil change interval
, it was to point out that some owners were following a 15,000 mile oil change interval because that's what Porsche said and because Mobil 1 oil is such good oil. I didn't intend to resurrect an oil thread - I just thought it was funny to see what the original owners of the cars were thinking. I believe a recommendation to "change oil every 15k miles because Mobil 1 is so good" in Rennlist today might actually get you banned.
