Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I bet you he had a Remote Start installed with that audio system...
Leading evidence: 'Install with' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Some (not all) American drivers are more used to the automatic car and changing from auto (family car) to Porsche and not thinking, this could happen in a split second.

Your cruise control should drop out when you depress the clutch pedal to change gear.

Test so removing the o2 sensors wouldn't help it pass

It's a southern California car, which I believe means it's always been subject to an emissions sniffer test so removing the O2 sensors wouldn't help it pass.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

As the title says, I'm able to start my car without engaging the clutch. Obviously the car wasn't designed to be operated this way and I'm assuming it's the safety switch on the clutch pedal? Anyone else ever run into this?
Thanks.
Nope! But I have run into situations where a safety switch dies the other way - I.E. in the "lockout" position - which, as a "safety" switch it's supposed to do... Strange indeed.
I got my head down there and it looks like the safety switch has been wired to be bypassed. The car previously an aftermarket sound system that was taken out by the previous owner. It appears the bypass wire runs back in that direction.
The first thing I did when I bought my 996 was to bypass the clutch interlock. I've been driving w/manual trans. for a long time without the interlock and don't need need it now.
Your cruise control should drop out when you depress the clutch pedal to change gear. For instance. If the clutch switch has been bypassed and you have your cruise control set at 80mph in 6th and you decide to drop into 5rd gear (but missing and hitting 3rd), the engine will rev like hell trying to travel at 80mph as ordered. No problem though as you can always touch the brake pedal (Unless that's been bypassed as well) or re select 5th gear. At least that's the way I THINK it's supposed to work. The worse scenario would be if you forgot to depress the clutch when starting the car and the car was in gear, with the hand brake off, it would jump forward possibly hitting something parked in front of it. I think I would 'un by pass' the switch if you can. It's there for a good reason. Some (not all) American drivers are more used to the automatic car and changing from auto (family car) to Porsche and not thinking, this could happen in a split second. Just a thought.
Yes it is good to have, if a child is in the car and decides to turn the key while its in first.
This happened locally in an old truck, child turned the key and truck drove itself off a dock into the water and the kid lost his life.
Maybe you don't have kids but the next owner may
I believe that European cars did not have this switch. Mine is a euro car and does not have it. What are the first 5 or so letters/numbers of your VIN?
She's a US car, I've previously run her VIN. There's some non-factory wiring going on underneath and the car previously had an aftermarket sound system installed. I'm just gonna see if I can do some swapping around to see if I can get it reactivated.
I've got two young kids at home and don't need an accident.
Could someone snap a pic of the wiring attached to the safety switch just underneath the dash? I just want to make sure I rewire this thing correctly.
Thanks!
Update:
I pulled out all of the aftermarket wiring and gizmos from the previous owner, including the wiring that appeared to be the clutch safety switch bypass. BUT, the car still starts without the clutch.
Now I'm starting to wonder if the PO also had an ECU flash done. I've heard some of them can do a software bypass of the safety switch.
I was wondering that as well - but I don't know whether RoW flash excludes the clutch bypass.
*edit* according to comments in the following thread, the RoW flash does not not require the clutch pedal to be depressed to start:

It's a southern California car, which I believe means it's always been subject to an emissions sniffer test so removing the O2 sensors wouldn't help it pass. But I'll have to check to see if the car has O2 sensors installed. If it does, then I don't know why the PO would do a ROW flash.
