Still kept it installed for the bluetooth and ipod control though.

Blaupunkt offered some single DIN CD players as options on Porsche that often show up used from the various Porsche parts recyclers too.

I don't like that Porsche is charging such a premium for slapping their name on what is really probably a $300 unit, but I'll still seriously consider it.

Maybe that would keep the cost down more and still offer the updated functionality while we just use our mobile phones for GPS.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The post says it's for older Porsche's up to the 993 but I'm wondering if it would fit in one of our single DIN slots. If so, I'd consider it.

This is great and most certainly an option when and if it comes to the US.
It will fit single din so it will fit our single din radios. I wonder how it will interact with the BOSE system.
I don't see why it wouldn't work. Worst case would be that you have to build a harness adapter.
Now if it would fit in correctly and sit flush like the original 996 units may be another question. I know the Pioneer/Kenwood/Alpine/etc.. units are cheaper and probably offer more, but I think they all look horrid. I'd consider this just for the nice clean style though I'd be more interested if they had a sans-nav version (I hate nav to begin with, don't want to pay Porsche's update prices, and just how useless is it going to be on that tiny screen).
Wish they'd offer one with all of the other features except for the NAV.
Maybe that would keep the cost down more and still offer the updated functionality while we just use our mobile phones for GPS.
It fits in the single-DIN slot, replacing the normal radio, and has Bluetooth, a built-in and external microphone both, and an integral amplifier with 4 channels at 45 watts each. It'll work with the original speakers with an optional adapter cable or can be used in a custom installation.
As far as I know all MK1 audio options were AM, AM/FM or AM/FM/Cassette. If you wanted to preserve the OE look you could probably run a jumper wire into the glove box and put a CD player in there or even a remote CD magazine w/amp elsewhere in the car wired into the stock-looking setup. Blaupunkt offered some single DIN CD players as options on Porsche that often show up used from the various Porsche parts recyclers too. They tend to be low on the flashing lights kinda bling that's more the fashion these days.
I don't see trying to use navigation on a screen
smaller
than my phone working out too well.
Typically, I agree that many aftermarket head units look out of place in Porsches. I put an Alpine single din unit in my 993, and never liked the way it looked. Still kept it installed for the bluetooth and ipod control though.
In my C4S, I just installed one of the Pioneer double din units (NEX 5000). In the 996 interior, I think it actually looks better than the stock setup.
I forsee a lot of wrecked 993's in the not-too-distant future...it's not hard to imagine a 993 owner whose bifocals are a couple of years out of spec squinting at that tiny display mounted above the passenger footwell plowing into whatever's in front of him...
To Rain's point, why would I install this so I can have a smaller screen than my phone? Besides, I have a 2010 and the bluetooth hardly works as is, why would I go with a more expensive, less functional solution?
I believe this unit is intended to appeal to those who are concerned with driving a "correct" Porsche - in this case, a radio that says "Porsche" instead of "Sony" or "Alpine" or whatever...
I don't see any other compelling reason to install this unit over (a) nothing, or (b) a unit with a larger display that is undoubtedly going to be more user-friendly than one with six buttons and two *****. _Maybe_ the touch screen will make the device easy to operate, but a dollar says otherwise.
I understand that Porsche will soon be releasing a version for the 996. It will be functionally superior in every way to the one designed for the air-cooled models, but will fail catastrophically and with no warning about 10% of the time. </sarcasm>
As an aside, those removal tool slots make the front of the radio look absolutely hideous. The unit isn't a looker to start with, but those two T-shaped holes sure don't help.
The point of the nav in the link is to still remain period correct in terms of looks as a priority while still being able to introduce new technology to an older car. The radio on the link is more suited to a 993 model as the ***** and such are period correct to that model. It would look a bit off on the 996 IMO.
Becker did make one for 996 but is hella hard to find these days and only used at that. This one is period correct for our models. If you're not concerned with period correct look or never plan on entering any kind of concourse show then any smartphone or double din will do.
I agree the removal slots are rather glaring, but as far as the look I like it better than the stock 996 unit or
any
aftermarket unit that is obviously marketed to kids that don't have a drivers license yet. We're on our 3rd aftermarket unit right now (Alpine IDA unit from 4 or 5 years ago) and while it's much better than most I still don't like it's look.
