Suggestion
I equate it to the fact I can buy a pair of $40 dollar sneakers, or spend upto $120 dollars for a much better real running shoe that saves my feet and can handle real exercise.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I watched this video and my main takeaway was that now the Corvette forums will have the article over and over for many decades titled:
"The battery died in my C8--how do I get into the car?"
You Tube
so all of us 996.2 owners can go over there and laugh...
It is a neat car, but I will be looking forward for those "My battery died..." posts on the Vette forums. Misguided friends of mine who own Vettes say the weak point of their cars is the electrical systems and various parasitic drags that tend to drain the battery. Hopefully GM fixed the new one so that isn't a problem, but we shall see. Waiting...waiting...
After that old guy cooked himself and his dog outside Waffle House, you'd think Chevy would rethink non-mechanical latches.

Apparently, the manual door release on the floor next to the seat escaped his notice. Definitely not the way I'd like to check out.
As for the mid-engine 'Vette - I might be tempted to let go of my '96 C4 for one of those...
I watched a recent Harry's Garage (only car YouTuber I can stand because he seems *genuine*) where he reviewed the 992
He mentioned the battery being a Li-On unit
I looked it up in the Porsche ETK and it costs like 2 to 3 THOUSAND.
A 996 is a lot of car for the money currently.
A late model LT1 C4 is a 'lotter' car for less money currently.
My 94 'purple' car was a great bargain at 2k and no actual cosmetic issues just needed lifters and a starter but it handled VT to MA via NY mountain roads on bald Z series tires in winter like a champ.
I didn't even mind the automatic trans which is rare.
I think C4s (like 996s) haven't seen their prime yet and really ushered in their modern counterparts.
Nope. Last GM I had was a 1981 Vette. Ok car but because because of emissions back then was gutless. 350 engine with less rated HP than my current Rav4.
I did a Museum Delivery with my 06 C6 and it's been trouble free ever since. I keep a CTEK charger on it as I do my 996. It has the base 400/400 and will kick *** on any Porsche from that time and many much newer. Don't get me wrong, I love everything about my 996, just my experience.
Oh, please. Like the 996/986 interior isn't ****.
And now? Hmmm.....C8 is a virtual supercar with a base price of $60K or a base 911 at $98K with yet another engine that will probably **** the bed like all 911 engines appear to do these days.
I'm liking the C8 more and more.
The post-oil-embargo Corvettes were tragic. The 190HP your '81 made is awful, but still better than the 1975 base 'Vette (165HP, 7.7 sec. 0-60, 16.1@87MPH quarter mile).
Agreed.
Though, aside from appearance...and the use of plastic, I think the 'quality' of the interior in the 996/986 is actually pretty good. I see a lot more 997's that are in worse shape than my '99 and many other 996's that I've experienced. Most of the 997's I've driven have peeling electronic controls, fading trim and deteriorating seating surfaces...I don't see that in the 996.
C8 is gonna be an amazing machine!
Mike
This is a good observation - something I've been noticing looking at 05-07 997's particularly. For a car that's built with "exclusively cheap materials" the inside of my '03 looks 3-5 years old at worst.
Materials snobbery is such a niche thing, anyway. Can't even argue it's a "car guy" thing, it's just a "certain car guy" thing. I've given a few non-car people rides in my 911 by request and when I explain to them the cosmetic issues people have with 996's I always get a "
Really?
" Yep. Really.
While MotorTrend's comments on the '99 996's interior ("
several editors felt the interior style and trimmings were not up to what's expected of a $75,000 car") weren't exactly glowing, most of the sh*t-talking comes from
non-996 911 owners...
I've been in any number of 70's and 80's 911 interiors; I'll take my "dreadful" 996 cabin over something styled like a beater Cessna 172 with coco mats.
Someone was commenting that they expect some of the original base models be traded in and be on the market pretty cheap as soon as they start releasing higher end versions. Might have been Rob Spaghetti.
I can wait to see original base C8s available 4 or 5 years from now.
When they're depreciated to less than 1/2 the original price I might buy one.
Of course the classic 2002 Porsche 911 will be kept in the garage!
On a related tangent, the rear doors on the Tesla Model 3 are electric only as well. It kind of freaks me out to think that if one goes into the water, or has a fire, anyone in back would likely have to work their way into the front seat to get out the front doors. It amazes me that such a basic feature as a mechanical door latch is not standard. Seems to be a lawsuit waiting to happen.
With the lithium fires, Autopilot decapitations, and Musk's "new math" when it comes to vehicle safety (
Tesla drivers are 4x more likely to die in a collision than Audi and BMW drivers), it does seem like there may be a few lawsuits headed in Elon's direction...
LOL...or as many other Porsche owners have done already they may look to go the route of the Automotive Restart Battery Antigravity offers with full battery management with a WIRELESS built in jump-starter so they don't have to worry about getting to the battery!
https://youtu.be/W4zZ0ZAIRkc
The largest Antigraivyt Batteries model is $950 and you don't really need that. Our other models in the 30Ah and 40Ah range are a lower Amp Hour and are about $700 to $750 and those are the ones that most get.
But twice the lifespan, never locked out of the frunk, not being stranded and saving 35 lbs over the stock battery is actually a very good value proposition for those who desire these features. So it just depends on your perspective. ITs a newer technology, it better and it does cost more.
I equate it to the fact I can buy a pair of $40 dollar sneakers, or spend upto $120 dollars for a much better real running shoe that saves my feet and can handle real exercise. It all depends on your application, and what you desire or need for your specific use.
^^^^
I'm definitely not new to the small light-weight automotive batteries. I've been using them for years in my track cars and on a couple of daily drivers.
The lightweight Odyssey battery I had in my 911 died and...left me locked out of the frunk, so, I can see some value in the feature that you're offering.
