I'd recommend doing used oil analysis and checking for fuel dilution as well and report back.

This is a great case in point why regular used oil analysis is so important.

Suggestion
It can't hurt to scope the cylinders and inspect the spark plugs, but your consumption if it's stable (which it looks like it has been), may just be normal for your particular engine.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

(small disclaimer - it's a Boxster but posting here for hopefully more results - same M96 engine!)
I've had my 2000 Boxster S for 7 years now. For the first 40k miles it burned about 1 quart per 5000 miles. Then the AOS blew at about 85k miles - some oil made it through but I shut it off pretty quick. It started really burning oil at about 5-7 quarts per 5000 miles. 40k miles later it still runs great despite the oil burn. I did compression/leakdown tests a couple years ago and nothing was abnormal. It's certainly going through the engine as the exhaust spits out a ton of carbon - no drips anywhere.
I'm at 125k miles now. I'm playing with several ideas of upgrading to a 987/981, rebuilding the engine to a Raby 3.6/3.8, or just keep driving it. If I keep driving I'll have to decide at some point do I sink $3,000+ for a clutch/IMS on an engine that may have issues. Plus other effects of the oil burn (cats, sensors).
Has anybody else been down this road where your engine burned way too much oil? What eventually happened? Or what did you do?
I never experienced that level of oil consumption, but it was higher than the manual said was ok. Around one quart per +/- 1,000 miles. Did anything happen to the engine yes(see below)...of course there were other symptoms, too.
Are you sure you have good compression/leak down?
If so, I would suspect you still have AOS problems. It is not uncommon to get a "flakey" AOS right out of the box, even Genuine Porsche brand..Jake Raby just had 2 engines that were hydrolocked due to failed AOS, one was a new right out of the box Genuine Porsche Brand.
You could have went from a "completely failed" AOS, to a "flakey" AOS...
Do a manometer test....
Yeah the numbers were fine. I don't recall what they were though.
That's what I had thought but I did try 2 different AOS. I drove it a couple hundred miles with the new AOS and it was burning so much oil so I took it back to the dealership and asked for a new one as I've read the AOS can be faulty out of the box. So with the 2nd one it kept burning oil so I didn't bother with a 3rd AOS.
What other symptoms did you have?
The car has been amazing for the 7 years I've had it (aside from 2 water pumps). I'm started getting a misfire on one bank at 5k+ RPM within the last couple thousand miles or so but the oil burning has been going on for 40k miles. Spark plugs were changed recently and coil packs tested. I need to get the cam timings checked.
Other symptoms: Spitting "carbon" out the bank two exhaust, a tapping noise( a lot of people say it sounds like a bad lifter...it's not.) beneath bank two which got progressively worse over a period of 2 years. Car ran fine until started throwing misfires #6 cylinder. Pulled plugs. #6 totally oil fouled. Bore scoped cylinders 4-5-6 scored(#6 super bad pic above).
What did your old spark plugs look like?
The old spark plugs had 30k miles on them and didn't seem majorly abnormal. But that was done a while ago - no pictures or precise description.
I haven't gotten any misfire on a specific cylinder, just the entire bank, so I don't think I'm facing any imminent cylinder failure.
What oil and brand of fuel are you running? What is the ethanol content? Have you checked your fuel trims?
The reason I ask is that I've seen perfectly healthy engines burn a quart every 1,000 miles. Boxster 2.5, 2.7, and 3.2 engines typically do not score bores - the engines with cast pistons using a KS piston with a more durable iron clad coating. It can't hurt to scope the cylinders and inspect the spark plugs, but your consumption if it's stable (which it looks like it has been), may just be normal for your particular engine.
I'd recommend doing used oil analysis and checking for fuel dilution as well and report back.
Mobil1 and top tier fuel - Shell 80% of the time. 10% ethanol for Texas. No on fuel trims.
Actually I do have oil analysis! My last report was after about 20k miles of increased oil consumption.
I would have a manometer test done on the crankcase to see what it measures. 4-6 inches of H20 is normal for these engines. If it's lower than that, the rings are worn out.
We have also noted an uptick in consumption when winter fuels are being sold. It usually improves once summer blends come back out. Any oils with high ester content also increase the consumption problem.
I don't like how high the iron, aluminum, and silicon levels are, however it's right on trend for your engine over it's whole life. This is a great case in point why regular used oil analysis is so important. I think the wear levels are so high just because M1 sucks.
Since your car is an early one, it can handle running 15w50 without any issue. I'd try a thicker oil. Most definitely, I would change brands. I'm a Driven fan.
Got it...will add manometer to the list. Going to have the cylinders scoped along with other Durametric reports.
Actually I have been running 15w50 solely for the past 30k miles (can see the higher zinc/phosphorus numbers in the last test which the 15w50 has). Before that I was flipping between 0w40 and 15w50 for winter/summer respectively (I'm in Texas).
