Suspected cause
The listener might be hearing valves or more likely the injectors.
Leading evidence: 'injectors' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'injectors' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace things' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
If the car is equipped with a Tip or the engine/transmission was coldthat could change things.

But I would not rely upon odds alone but run a car that I otherwise liked by a tech for his opinion.

Once i'm back home i started my Porsche and i can say that at idle there is absolutely no clapping sound at all the engine just run smooth as it is supposed to be.

My experience, based on among other things my time with my 03 Turbo, if the engine/drivetrain was fully up to temperature -- like after a thorough test ride/drive -- and if the car is equipped with a manual transmission the tranny (or clutch or both) can making what could be described as a clapping sound.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello folks...,
I do have now since 2010 a 996 C4 2000 with 60K on it
Now i'm looking for a 996 Turbo Porsche.
Today i went to see a 996 2002 Turbo with 60K on it.
My question is...when the car was running on neutral at idle i can here a clapping sound cumming from the engine..like a valve clapping sound.
I told it to the guy and he said that was normal.
Once i'm back home i started my Porsche and i can say that at idle there is absolutely no clapping sound at all the engine just run smooth as it is supposed to be.
I also listening at an other 996 turbo 2001 and the engine was doing about the same clapping sound...is that normal for a turbo engine or not?
Robert

It is gear (or clutch disc) rattle.
My Turbo makes this when fully up to temperature, sometimes. It has to be warm. The transmission fluid is pretty thick otherwise. I can stop the noise by just normally pressing the clutch pedal then releasing it. I can make the noise reappear by revving the engine a bit.
If the car is equipped with a Tip or the engine/transmission was coldthat could change things. Too bad you didn't make a video/audio of the noise.
It's normal. It should go away when the engine is revved above 1700 rpm or something like that. Very common from what I've read.

Are you guys saying this "normal" noise is from the engine or the tranny, or both? The OP said engine so I assume he's talking about the engine and not the tranny.
If it's from the engine, do you know what causes it? Hard to imagine a healthy engine making a clapping noise...just curious.
Without hearing the noise, going only by what the OP posted, I assumed what he was hearing was the gear rattle (maybe with a bit of friction disc rattle) these engines coupled with a manual transmission can make.
These engines can be noisy but the noise should not include a rhythmic ticking, knocking, clapping noise.
Briefly, these engines have a lot going on inside of them: pistons going up and down, valves opening and closing, injectors turning on and off, spark plugs sparking; and it would be more surprising if they weren't noisy.
Now while if one listens to the engine he might hear perhaps a rhythmic ticking noise that appears to be in sync with the engine speed, this is the mind finding a pattern where there really is none. The listener might be hearing valves or more likely the injectors.
'course one needs to be experienced enough with listening to engines and Turbo engines in particular to recognize a false alarm or a possible real problem.
And always if one has any doubt the noise is just his imagination (I say this with no ridicule or malice intended) he should have the car checked out by an experienced technician. IIRC while the OP didn't run the car by a tech he did listen to another Turbo's engine and heard the same noise.
If the noise is something to be alarmed about hard to imagine the odds the OP would encounter two vehicles with the same issue. But I would not rely upon odds alone but run a car that I otherwise liked by a tech for his opinion.
This would be *after* I assume the OP treated both cars to a full road test and found no engine or other issues.
A full road test first as a passenger then as a driver is very important. One simply has to experience the car, the engine, in its natural habitat and under the same types of usage -- within reason and the law... -- as he intends to the use the vehicle.
