Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

26 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Earlier this afternoon I was reading this thread and thinking to myself, "Yeah my battery has gone pretty long compared to Dennis." Well just my luck...I'm exhausted, hungry, dressed in a suit and burning up from the heat when I get to my car. I turn the key and it sounds like an electronic machine gun. I try again and then once more and make a diagnosis that my battery is dead. Since it was in an underground parking garage towing wasn't really an option and I didn't feel like waiting 3 hours for AAA to replace it and charge me a premium. Took a bus to a park and ride and had the wife pick me up, went home, changed and went to the store to pick up a battery. Headed back downtown and in about 5 minutes was able to swap out devices and get back on the road. It's the first time it's stranded me at work as the only other time was after a weekend at the track. Thankfully it was more of an inconvenience than anything really awful but I'm glad I've picked up a few pointers along the way and don't have to wait helplessly for a tow or a mechanic who will take his time getting to me.

POST 2Original post

Good job and I always enjoy the freedom of DIY. How old was your battery?

POST 3Original post

Great story, thanks for sharing ! Battery swap is an easy one but I think at some point the 996's will only be owned by the DIY class... Like the 928 or 944 crowd

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source posts: 11508168, 11508222

It was 3 years old in April. Yeah it is easy but you'd be surprised how many people still find that intimidating. I think most older P-cars end up being owned by the DIY crowd during their mid-life. They're still losing value which makes them too cheap to have a mechanic maintain. I do take mine into the dealer for the hard work but regular maintenance get's done at home. But once the value of a model goes up then it becomes okay to have the pros maintain it again.

POST 5Original post

I'll be picking up a new battery in the morning and going through the same routine.

POST 6Original post

Try the BOSCH Part No 49-850B. They have a 3 year warranty from Pep Boys. Lock the car every time you get out via the key button. If the engine wont start EVEN after a week, then you have a short somewhere or your generator is crap.

POST 7Original post

Is that Bosch battery a direct, bolt in replacement with no modifications required? My local Pep Boys has that in stock as well as the Platinum series version of the same battery.

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 11509007

If you look in your battery tray, there's a sliding piece there that you can adjust for different battery sizes. Group 48, H6 & H7 should all fit. I read that 49 fits, but the last hole for that sliding piece is unthreaded and people have to add a nut to use it. FYI, coupon code TNT30 will take 30% off anything at advanced auto. Order online, pick up in store. That'll make their group 48 battery just over $100. If you want to go fancy, you can get the agm one for a bit over $125 too.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I bought an H7 sized battery at Wally World. Not a brand name but in a pinch I needed something so I'm back in business again.

POST 10Original post

Now you just need to learn to pop start it so you don't have to bother your wife.

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 11509007

If the platinum is AGM, you may want to consider that. It's supposed to be better. I always wanted to try but so far my regular batteries are lasting a long time so no chances for me yet There are not many direct fit AGM batteries so this may be a good choice. For non-AGM batteries, Costco's ones (group 48) are cheap and good. Of course it comes with the unbeatable Costco warranty.

I actually considered it. I looked for an incline that was close but no dice. And I just thought of something that I didn't even consider yesterday...I had jumper cables in the emergency kit in my frunk!!! Argh, I could have just asked someone to help me that way instead of doing the whole round trip home and back to the office. Oh well - chalk it up to another life learning experience.

POST 13Original post

The dealer where I bought the Porsche battery ended up replacing it at no charge, so I'll still be using a Porsche/Moll battery. I'm glad they stepped up and did the right thing! As far a pop starting the car - I'm very, very familiar with this process. I used to own an Alfa Romeo. I think they actually describe the process in the owner's manual!

I owned a 1953 Jag XK120, 1956 XK140, 1959 MK IX, and a 1962 E. You learn to always park at the top of the hill, even if it is a 1/2 mile walk to your final destination. Another thing you learn from DIY on British cars is how to clean and set the voltage regulator points.

POST 16Original post

That is a BEAUTY! Did you have to install the brace to keep the car from sagging in the middle with that battery?

POST 17Original post

Just take extra precautions when charging the AGM's. You're probably ok with any smart battery maintainer though.

POST 18Original post

Quotes source post: 11509603

I had the brace before the new battery....just glad that the brace still fits and now it does double duty by helping to hold the new battery in place...

WTF happened there? Bumper gone, headlights in the frunk...please do tell! I'd rather have that extra capacity in reserve than leave extra space in there.
