I do see the 996TT can hold its value well in the long run because of the engine and performance.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi guys, I recently look at used car market and I am interested in a 996. There are 2 996 near the place I live. One is 2003 C2 with 89k miles, listed at $24k with complete maintenance history but did not change the IMS bearing yet. VIN: WP0AA29903S622072 Another is 2003 C2 with 28k miles, listed at $35k . inspected by local Porsche dealer, new tires, IMS bearing addressed (LN aftermarket installed) VIN: WP0AA29953S621953 The one with 28k miles looks very clean and just like new one. Well, it is obvious that low mileage car is used less. I checked the KBB and the price is closed to KBB estimation. I knew the used car get more and more expensive this year. I am trading in my ND Miata so I just pay the difference with tax. Appreciate all the inputs.

POST 2Original post

Well if money is not an issue and the IMS has been addressed than the lesser mileage 996 would be the way to go. I've heard that the IMS usually affects lower mileage cars and if you have a higher mileage car than you're probably alright. Also I think the IMS issue was only like 3% of multiple models and years so its not like every cars a ticking time bomb. Next 2 issues I think would be a leaking RMS and bore scoring. You may want to find out where the cars spent the majority of there lives as I've heard bore scoring is more prevalent in cars from colder climates.

POST 3Original post

whats your budget? If you can scrape together 45kish, the 996TT gets you the most bang for your buck and since it has a completely different motor (the mezger engine) it doesnt suffer from all the short comings of the M96 motor design.

POST 4Original post

Is that what the turbos are going for now, I thought they were quite a bit higher at the moment. Ive seen some C4S 996 going for 40s recently.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I don't have clear budget but I won't spent more than $55k in total. The local 996TT is listed at $52k with 44k miles. VIN: WP0AB29941S687663 I can afford it but I am not sure if I need the extra power.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for all the advices. I will start the searching by test drive the c2 / tt. I do see the 996TT can hold its value well in the long run because of the engine and performance.

POST 7Original post

Ive seen them from mid 40s to mid 60s Just my 2 cents. I had a 2003 n/a 996 first and after 6 months or so, I definitely wanted more power. the turbos are not too over the top, its a great combination imo. My other 2 cents about the turbos is no longer having to worry about the motor grenading due to its design flaws. I always worried about it and the peace of mind is worth the price of admission to many. Not to mention they hold their values extremely well. If you got 55k to spend, its a no brainer to get a turbo.

POST 8Original post

The 996 has pretty modern performance, if you're on the fence about more power, you'll probably find the non-turbo to have plenty. Also, 45-50k gets a bottom of the barrel 996tt these days. That's quickly becoming C4S money.

POST 9Original post

Are you buying a 996 as a daily driver, or just for fun night and weekend drives, or as a track car? The answer might influence what you buy. I have a 996 4s stock and a much more powerful 997.2 4s 4.0. The 996 4s is a fantastic car and even though its doesn't have HP numbers that compare with more modern cars, it's quick and fast enough to get you into plenty of trouble. I've driven nearly 40k 911 4s miles in 2+ years and never once said "If I only had more power!!". IMHO other than the few here who have dedicated track cars, not a single 996 owner gets anything close to all they can out of their cars in stock form, let alone after mods, it's just not possible on the streets. Bragging rights about HP is meaningless if it's not usable. Has anyone here approached 75-80% of your car's top speed, I seriously doubt it.

POST 10Original post

Don’t buy a 996 if you want to track it unless it’s a GT3 or TT (Metzger engine). The 996 is all you need for street and weekend driving. Do a search on oil starvation, AOS, etc. on the M96 non-Metzger. That said, the GT3 and Turbos do have their shortcomings, e.g., valve guides, etc. Best to talk to a LOT of people who have both and mechanics.

POST 11Original post

+1. Otherwise, you should buy the 996 that passes a PPI inspection that includes a bore scope (top and bottom), cam deviation checks, and someone to go through the car well. Low mileage 996s could actually be worse than a higher mileage example.

There seems to be a decent amount of mid 50s stock out there. https://www.autotempest.com/results?...urbo&zip=90210 Im not so sure about this one. There are plenty of places that have standing mile events. I got mine up to 185 at an event in Texas ( https://texasmile.net/texas-mile/ ) Plus there are lots of open stretches of open interstate in rural areas, not to mention places with lots of twisty roads.

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 17573844

I own both a 2003 cab and a 2003 turbo. My advice is buy the turbo, the engine is rock solid.

POST 14Original post

I equate standing mile events as a form of tracking your car, and yes I take my car to "immediate arrest" speed almost daily, but my point is that most people should try getting the most out of a stock 911 before throwing $ at mods to gain some HP. Strip some weight out, lose some driver's weight, that might equally help performance. I see a modified 996 tt at NJ C&C that posts doing an 8.55 (i think) 1/4 mile at north of 200 mph. After watching videos of 992 turbo S doing 10.1 I really want to see a sub 9 sec run.

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 17574080

plenty of cool nice highways here in Texas. Anyway I would offer $22k for the higher mileage car, specially if they have already done a bunch of maintenance. Keep the rest of the money for mods, maintenance. Drive it for a while before stepping up for the turbo. Plenty more available.

I believe the IMS issue effected 8% +/- of single row bearings and <1% of dual row IMSB's. These numbers come from the class action suit against Porsche. Both these cars have single row IMSB's.
